Whether you lose by eight points or four points a loss is a loss

There's no mental block , Mayo just didn't do their homework on opposition in those finals, simple as.

Mayo have only shown clever tactics/game management in 2 of those final loses, and that was under Steven Rochford losing to the greatest team that was ever built, taking them to the absolute wire but hadn't a bench to call upon to kill them off.

He's back again, and with Kevin Mc also adding to the mix, have no doubt this Mayo side will be far bettered prepared should they get to this years All Ireland final,

Louth lost to Cork by a few points who lost to kerry by a few points and a very dodgy ref decision.

Louth deserve respect and a tight pitch will suit them.Unlike Roscommon though the weather won't and Mayo should be fresh enough too,Mayo by 7- 8 points imo.

As for galway lads trying to stir the pot here? It's great craic! They're the media darlings now for some reason and they can't figure out if they like it or not........and this after coming out of the cauldron of cuasck Park, mullingar?

Very enjoyable, hope they keep it going!

Don't know how you can say we showed clever tactics and game management in 2016. Dublin were a great side, but were there for the taking on both days.

I don't remember any great game management or tactical changes in 2017 either (we conceded a goal in the opening minute). Just 2 quality teams going head to head for the win.

It was there for the taking if we had a bench, they silenced Dublin's attack who were destroying teams left right & centre before encountering Mayo.

Nobody gave Mayo a chance to take these games to the wire , including some of our own.

Under Horan in finals, most games were either lost in the opening 20 minutes giving away silly goals , or not reading the script like in 2013 when Dublin had an injured player on the pitch, but we continued man marking him instead of pushing up.

By large Mayo have been disastrous in finals, only Rochford from a managerial perspective got his match-up & tactics correct in both finals, and now we have him again but this time theirs no juggernaut out there standing in Mayo's way.

Look back at that 2016 final. We never really pushed up and went for it until the last 5 minutes. No jack McCaffrey, James McCarthy gone early with a black card. It was the biggest missed chance of all the recent finals IMO. Dublin only very narrowly beat Kerry in the semi, certainly didn't destroy them.

In the replay Rochford changed goalkeepers and brought Alan Dillon off the bench despite having a broken bone in his foot. Not the best management decisions I think most will admit.

Favourites for what? You've no idea right enough.

Think this game will be tight enough, we never seem to do well against packed defenses and Mickey Harte will have his homework done.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,345 ✭✭✭HBC08

Might be tighter than people think.

Louth had no problem putting up a big score against Cork.

Mickey Harte is a wiley old fox, everybody expecting Louth to go very defensive and hit Mayo on the break.Mayo traditionally struggle against blankets in Machale Park (see Cavan,Tyrone, fermanagh,Derry,Galway,Roscommon ) in recent enough times.

I think if they try this Mayo will have planned for it and will win well. However a curveball like going man to man would upset and surprise Mayos plan and might keep Louth in the game longer but I'm expecting a Mayo win regardless.

I think this could be an interesting game.

    Changes to today's starting 15:

    (18) Jason Doherty replaces (10) Fionn McDonagh.

    (24) Padraig O’Hora replaces (5) Paddy Durcan.

    (22) Donnacha McHugh replaces (9) Diarmuid O’Connor.

Aiden Orme added to the Mayo 26 and will wear No. 9.

    Diarmuid a huge loss.

RTE saying he isn't injured, just being rested.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,693 ✭✭✭✭Cartman78

Jeez got a fright there....thought Joanne Cantwell said Diarmuid O'Connor had been "arrested" instead of "rested" 😂

Anyway, wear sunscreen and hydrate lads....looks sweltering in Castlebar 🔥

Paddy fully togged and in for the toss just like he was in Killarney.

I guess that means he'll come on at some stage

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,345 ✭✭✭HBC08

Coen to MF and Mchugh to HB?

Maybe Carney to move into MF but who goes to HF then

Good options off the bench if we're in trouble

I’ve literally no idea what you’re talking about

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,132 ✭✭✭Barlett

This is a tough game to watch

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,693 ✭✭✭✭Cartman78

Making heavy weather of this 🫤

Actually doing reasonably ok against a blanket defense but some bad wides

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,345 ✭✭✭HBC08

Very difficult to play against these Louth tactics, especially on MacHale Park pitch and in this heat.Horrible to watch, hopefully Mayo can get a goal and pull away, terrible to see these tactics being rewarded in any way.

But all they'll be rewarded with is a moral victory against a Div 1 team.

No team playing that sort of defensive stuff will win anything.

    Some save from Reape 😬

Subs needed here asap to freshen things up...gone very sloppy

    Horrible game and performance.

But a win is a win I guess....and a badly needed one with Cork waiting in the longish grass maybe

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,132 ✭✭✭Barlett

Well back down to Earth after the performance, still happy to cough up the last minute goal

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 617 ✭✭✭franklyon

Well got the win, less said about everything else the better.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 120 ✭✭Be-Jaysus

Not great, 6 points shy of the 20 point mark, but a win is a win.

Only good thing to come out of today's game was seeing the fraudulent 300k Mchale Park pitch being exposed to the nation on RTE 2.

Its an absolute disgrace that warrants an investigation, as to where and how the money was spent during the project.

Looks like lots of shortcuts were taken by either the contractor or the county board to enrich themselves further..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,345 ✭✭✭HBC08

Well it wouldn't be a moral victory it would be an actual victory.

Most teams in the country won't win Sam,half of them don't even play in it but if you're the likes of Louth you might come up the divisions, maybe get to a leinster final and claim the odd famous victory along the way.Thats about the best Louth can do so I understand why they do it.I just don't want to see it rewarded because it's so horrible to watch

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 60 ✭✭Heskey1971

Isn't head the head the first criteria if 2 teams are level on points in the group?

If so, even if Kerry win and Mayo lose versus Cork then Mayo top the table?

    I could be wrong

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,626 ✭✭✭✭PARlance

There would be 3 teams on 4 points then so it goes to points difference.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,121 ✭✭✭crusd

There’s a template there to play against us. Cillian would have been great to have today. And Diarmuid also to a lesser extent. Having the ability to take on long range points is what you need against those tactics

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,145 ✭✭✭✭Loafing Oaf

Twas sweltering, even up at the back of the stand. Let's just say not the pleasantest afternoon of my life all round...

Good to get a result but uninspiring to say the least. Don't think we took a single long range shot or put a single high ball in - just did the same thing repeatedly and it was easy enough to defend against for a team as well organised as Louth. Good thing they didn't get ahead or we could have been in trouble
