I think someone predicted it here, that Louth would set up defensive and Mayo would struggle to break them down, with Mayo's superior fitness, bench and experience etc winning the day.
Well that's more or less what happened.
This team has a great chance of winning an All Ireland but I'm worried that they won't if they meet someone like Galway or Derry who play a very defensive game.
Why can't they figure it out, it's been going on for years ?
It reminded me of the home league game in 2015 in the H&C era against Tyrone where they couldn't get past the 45.
A win is a win and all that, and they will learn more from this than a 10 point hammering etc, but sort out getting past a blanket defense please.
I'd expect Cork to be more open next week so I'd expect a Mayo win, but they need to sort this stuff out.
If Cork have any sense, they saw the template today to beat this Mayo team.
I doubt Cork have the quality to beat Mayo playing that way but plenty of other teams left in the championship do, most obviously Derry & Galway and to a lesser extent Monaghan & Roscommon. It's harder to implement that gameplan in Croker but if you can, we seem to have no idea how to respond
he has bigger fish to fry
But it's not a switch that can be turned on.
Louth have had Mickey Heart as coach for a good few years, it's no surprise that they have inched their way up the leagues and have the game plan like they had today, it's been worked on over time.
So if Cork don't already have a defensive ethos they can't just come up with one in a week.
But as the other poster said it's the likes of Galway and Derry that will be the problem, as they are already play defensively.
Did the ref blow up on the dot of 5 minutes of injury time? I was sure there was more to come after Louth's last point...
It was almost 6 minutes.
Their last point was scored after the 5 minutes had elapsed . It was 6 by the time the ball was kicked out
Anyone any idea what happened to Tommy Conroys face?
He smacked into a post I think.
I think a lot of people got a fright when he went down and players were calling for the medic. He probably should have been taken off as a precaution but glad he was OK to continue.
The template is defend on mass and hope to get a goal or 2 against the run of play.
apparently there is if Louth's near-miss today is anything to go by...
Its mind boggling how many cannot defeat these defensive systems. It's like they play it too safe with the ball handling so only 100 percent guaranteed passes are played and therefore no penetration.
Surely you mix it up. Penetrating runs to draw fouls, kick from distant which should be an option when no wind and I think the mark could be a great tool to defeat that setup too.
Watch Clifford and Walsh in last yrs final…………..that’s how its done…
How is that game in any way relevant to Louth yesterday?
Kerry will give you space and 1 on 1 opportunities.
theres plenty of space out on the 45 if your good enough …..that’s my point.
It's a bank holiday, its the middle of a heatwave and you're on a rival counties thread sh1tting on about last years All Ireland.....which galway lost.
Have a good look at yourself.
And when there's space, e.g. vs Kerry, Mayo can rack up scores better than most. When teams come out to pack the defense and keep the score down that's not possible.
Mayo aren't unique in that regard. Dublin only scored 1-11 last weekend and 14 points when Kildare went defensive in Croke Park.
He's known for it wait for we we didn't lose 6 all irelands reply
Yes but all the Galway forwards caught fire in Croke Park that day. Swinging over points from every angle...
Nothing to do with Galway………our players are well capable of passing the buck when it comes to shooting from distance also.
Mangement insistence of keepin possession at all costs is ruining football in my view.
In my opinion a big issue yesterday was that we didn’t leave an extra player further up the pitch, there were a few times where we broke and the furthest player forward was on the half way line…now I understand they didn’t want to get caught on the break but I think the approach was overly cautious.
That said, two glorious goal chances were spurned, need to improve our ratio on those…missed a lot against Kerry too.
From being at the match, we kept one up most of the time - Conroy was on the 13m line at one stage with his marker and no other player (incl goalie) in the same half
According to Mayo Gaa Blog posters, word on the street is the Cork game will be in Tullamore.
Just had a look and nobody suggested that, just a couple of posters hoping it's Tullamore
Willie Joe (moderator and not a man for rumours) says he's heard it was Tullamore so I'd expect it is.Great if it is!
A big pitch, nice ground and on the train line.Id expect a big vocal crowd from Mayo similar to what we had v Cork in GG in 2017.
I'd be happy enough with Ennis or GG too.
Fair enough, didnt see that one. When will they be announced i wonder? I see the Tailteann Cup prelim Qfs have just been officially announced
Tullamore would be very unfair on Cork supporters. It would actually be worse than CP as most of the journey would be cross country.
Limerick is 80 minutes from a lot of Mayo but still 80-90+ minutes from Cork football heartlands.
As all the games have to be played at the same time I would have considered Tullamore might have been an option for Kerry/Louth. Portlaois or Thurles would be fairer in that fixture.
Yeah it doesn't make sense logistically, Tullamore is about the same distance from far west Cork as Galway so why not have it there?
I say it further. From Limerick I be Galway in less than an hour( ya Salthill would add 30 minutes) but Tullamore is nearly two hours away
