I would just delay it again at this stage, the game has already been delayed a full year. It's a joke not launching with 60fps. It was so stupid doing that "coming in the next 12 months" showcase last June. Starfield and Forza have already been delayed out of that window so might as well just take the embarrassment of delaying the third of the big games that were supposed to launch in 12 months.

There will be games this generation that will only be 30 / 40 FPS. There are some already, in fact, like A Plague Tale Requiem. I think that's something console-only players will have to tolerate, whether they like it or not, as games push graphical boundaries and use new tech like Unreal Engine 5.

BUT the problem here is that releasing it somewhere down the line just gives the impression of something being unfinished and rushed out before its ready. If a 60 FPS version is possible - as it is in this case - it shouldn't be an afterthought added after the fact.

If the current consoles can't do UE5 games at 60fps then expect to see a PS5 Pro/Xbox Series X+ before too long. I started a Plague Tale Requiem on Series X but didn't get too far, I found the frame rate fairly off putting. I'd rather play at 1440p/60 than 4K/30 if the option was available.

I think a lot of games using UE5 should be able to push 60 FPS as it's been so heavily optimised recently. I believe Fortnite UE5 runs at high frame rates without a bother. But there will be some games that push the Lumen / Nanite stuff hard, and other developers will deffo be pushing hard for extra graphical fidelity at the cost of frame rate.

I'd also take frame rate over extra graphical fidelity every time, but we've definitely been spoilt during the cross-gen period (God of War Ragnarok is maybe the closest thing we've ever gotten to a full-quality PC port on consoles). I think most games will probably still target 60 wherever possible, but yeah there's no doubt more games will go with 30 on consoles in the coming years. Starfield will be an interesting test case in that respect.

The other thing is the gulf between the graphical fidelity between performance and fidelity modes could grow - you'll get 60FPS modes, but without some of the more advanced graphical features.

All games should really be targeting 30 FPS at 4K and then 60 FPS 1440p or 1080p (of course ray tracing complicates things).

I really don't see this being too bad an issue. If they tried to sneak this under the consumer nose but they are being upfront about it and there is a 60 FPS mode promised post release. If you want 60 FPS then wait for the patch. Seems the majority of the uproar is the loudest dumbest sony fanboys using it as a stick to beat MS over the head with.

John Linneman on the other hand brings up an actual concern, All of Arkane's recent releases have had frame pacing issues at 30 FPS (and even 60 FPS for Deathloop on PC as well as the complete shitshow Dishonored 2 was on PC at release) and even though UE5 is a new engine for them a stable 30 FPS is perfectly serviceable but add frame pacing and it's horrible.

I don't think the 'loudest, dumbest Sony fanboys' comment is at all fair or accurate in this case. Some of the most prominent critical tweets I've seen on this have been from Tom Warren and Jez Corden, who are both very much embedded on the pro-Microsoft beat. I'm sure fanboys are being fanboys too, but this definitely has understandably irked a lot of Xbox owners going by the online response.

I still don't see the issue though, they seem to be jumping on the outrage bandwagon. It was demo'ed at 60 FPS but it was never stated to be XBox gameplay, I think. I mean the game is coming to PC which will support 60FPS. And even then there is a 60 FPS patch in the works. Has there been a timeline mentioned on the patch? I imagine it won't be too long and the patch will be worked on during the certification and distribution phase of getting the game to stores. Could be within the first month of release. I imagine that a 1440p 60 FPS mode or FSR should be easy enough to add but might have caused a delay in certification.

Yeah the only thing I wasn't sure of was have they been showing trailers, previews etc in 60fps, in which case then yeah I could see why people would be upset that the game wasn't releasing with a 60fps performance mode. You'd imagine if it's only going to be a few weeks until the patch for 60fps, they might have been better delaying the game, but maybe they were just caught in that zone of "too close to release to delay, but not close enough that they'd get the 60fps by launch".

Is this the modern day equivalent of E3 videos being FMV instead of actual gameplay and then outrage after. I dont think I have ever really noticed anything between FPS and that's me flicking between different game modes on my tv across ps5 and series X.

It could be my old man eyes or could be that the difference is minimal

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 53,288 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

Again, there will be a PC port at 60 FPS.

I imagine this was a microsoft decision to shorten certification time for the game. If there were performance issues at 60 FPS that needed to be ironed out then it would cost a lot of time to best to release at 30 FPS where performance is a lot easier to keep consistent.

I know you've been very anti-30 FPS in the past, so you'd surely rather both options are available for people on launch day than having to wait? PC version or not, a lot of people will be playing this on Xbox, so you can understand some are frustrated they won't have the option to play 60 FPS on launch day after it being shown in 60 FPS prominently in marketing. I know for me 30 vs 60 FPS is usually significant enough to transform the playability of a game. A lot of people also like to play on launch when the game is fresh and lots of others are playing too, especially when Game Pass means it's readily available to all subscribers.

It's hardly the end of the world or anything, but it's IMO an understandable frustration and an unspecified timeline for the 60 FPS mode doesn't help, even if it is likely to be relatively soon after launch. Again, it's a bad precedent for core features to be patched in post-launch.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 53,288 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

Oh I'd definitely prefer a 60 FPS mode at launch. I'm not saying it's a great thing, 60 FPS modes at launch is the ideal situation. It's more the outrage being generated about this when as you said previously there's been plenty of games locked to 30 FPS released this generation. The only difference here is it's a first party Microsoft title. The outrage just feels a bit disingenuous and more a bash of MS than anything. It's also not ideal but it is getting patched. Nothing to stop you playing the game at release or waiting for the patch if 30 FPS really is an issue.

Saying that Microsoft (and other third parties) should be able to emulate the range of performance modes offered by Sony's output but Sony being so far ahead they can take their time with releases whereas MS are desperate for content.

Sounds like excuses tbh, but shur you love any chance to have a go at Sony/PS! ;)

I think it's completely understandable. Marketing in 60fps, then dropping the 30fps at launch on Xbox only a month before launch. Yeah, it'll have 60fps on PC at launch, and no doubt every PC player will have an amazing issue free experience /sarcasm, but as said a lot of people will be playing on Xbox. And a lot of people are now used to 60fps. It stopped me playing Tchia until it was patched. Same with any game quality vs performance, it's too noticeable, God of War, Forspoken, all of them.

It'll be a step backwards if 30/40fps is the expected "standard" going forward. The graphic differences between quality and performance are not worth the drop in FPS. But, each to their own and all that.

I'd be happy to play this in 30fps, don't understand the obsession and the drama over 60 fps, I play most games at 30fps and don't notice the difference, I hope they don't delay it because of this.

Seems like Karak released his review early by mistake (now deleted). He's only one reviewer, but man, he doesn't seem to like it.

People who did the New Zealand trick, had moderate success and have said the AI is just terrible.

Vampires are not following players or seem to have zones of operations and once you exit that point they return to previous area. If you run into a house, Vampire will get stuck outside (accidental lore accuracy ??)

Seemingly If you shoot one cultist, you can more or less kill another three or four before the group reacts.

Visually great open world, just boring and dull gameplay.

Hope these are exaggerations. I was a big fan of deathloop and Dishonored.

The Gamecentral review notes there’s no matchmaking - friends’ lists only, apparently,

Initial impressions aren’t great. Seems buggy with unresponsive AI and a lot of areas with little to do. So, generally unfinished.

I would say a year down the line, when everything is working and content has been added it could be great fun.

But it’s pretty poor to release a first party game in such a state - I wouldn’t imagine Sony or Nintendo putting a game out with these issues. I wonder if it’s kind of a game pass effect, they felt they needed first party content and they didn’t want to hold it back another few months to clash with Starfield. So release it now and keep working on it. And that’s not a bad idea, really - but then they should just call it early access and have it on game pass only for a few months until it’s actually in a good place for a full launch.

That looks like absolute pants. The graphics look ancient.

Had a quick bash on steam deck there just got to first enemies, the AI is woeful, it plays and feels like Deathloop maybe the poor AI in that wasn't by design after all.

I will need to get a few hours in to see if its as pants as my initial reaction is.

Makes sense targeting 30 FPS first. Game doesn't sound finished at all yet. The unfortunate thing is there seems to be a good game hidden behind a few months of patches.

Yeah opinions seem mixed on this.

I'm going to do what others have suggested.

Do the Cyberpunk approach. Give it a year, wait until its well patched, then I'll buy. There us definitely the bones of a great game and fun concept here, just needs more polish.
