No, it's because Italy need absolutely everything to go their way to be remotely competitive.

People get worked up about the 50-50 calls going against them because every time a 50-50 call goes against them, their chance of winning slips away a bit further. And we all want Italy to win. But every team gets these calls for and against them.

It is entirely a fan's bias thing.

The weaker teams are defending more and don't have the same control of what they're doing in attack. That's why weaker teams are penalised more. You concede more under pressure than when composed and in control. Italy in particular make it hard for themselves with mistakes

Nah, don't buy that. There's a very clear neckroll on the Italian player earlier, which is ignored, and then the Italians immediately knock on. Instead of a clearing penalty, relieving pressure, they go into a set of scrums that result in the yellow and second Scottish try. Some of these poor ref decisions have big swings. Now, you could say that's still on Italy for being poor in the scrum, but to say it's pure fan bias is a bit reductive, imo.

What is more reductive than "the refs always ride Italy"?

I remember the olden days when Ireland were crap and supposedly we were ridden by refs and not getting the 50-50 calls. Of course it hadn't anything to do with the team infringing either.

Scotland should have a card there

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,346 ✭✭✭Eoinbmw

    Joke absolute joke!

  • Hosted Moderators Posts: 9,584 ✭✭✭fitz

I agree, that's a reductive statement too, but it's not what I said. I think theres something to what you're saying too...it's frustrating when they get clear bad reffing decisions cause it impacts them more than stronger sides.

Ridiculous stuff here again, Scots should have been down to 14 here.

Scotland tackler miles offside there surely

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 28,132 ✭✭✭✭Larbre34

    Absolutely thieved.

    Italians blew it!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,279 ✭✭✭ClanofLams

Should have been penalty and yellow card. Ref has had very poor game generally emphasised by that shocking call.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,111 ✭✭✭✭sligeach

Italy should feel very hard done by. And now the salt in the wound, Scotland get a try right at the death.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,634 ✭✭✭OldRio

Italy will break your heart. So so close.

    Cruel. So cruel.

It ended up 26-14 to Scotland, but so easily could have been 19-21 to Italy.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,999 ✭✭✭amacca

I'd be raging if I was an Italian fan....ffs Scotland are either infringing or not...and fine he can't check it but that's where you need a rule change for something as crucial as that or something like a head coach has three challenges for iffy stuff like that

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 152 ✭✭RAKM

Italy in strong pos at end of game and manage to lose by more. Played 5 lost 5 conceded 4 tries in each game.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,116 ✭✭✭Former Former Former

Whereas constant abuse of refs on social media is exactly what the game needs.

Scotland deserved to be beaten but so did Italy at the end of the day. Mad game with some terrible rugby.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,116 ✭✭✭Former Former Former

Wouldn't matter. The ref was absolutely fine today.

People don't want refs to make the correct decisions. They want the refs to make the decisions that bring about the result they want.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,304 ✭✭✭kksaints

Don't see how you can call the ref fine today, got some key decisions wrong which had a big impact on the result. I think you've made a judgement earlier and are going to stick to it despite evidence to the contrary.

Only saw the first half. One ref problem I thought was, the pacing of his calls at scrum set up was too slow. It had no rhythm which a huddle of 16 players need.
