Are tattoos trashy?

I was on the bus and overheard this posh teenage girl talk to her friend on the phone about how her mother thought it was ridiculous for her to get a henna tattoo. She said it would make her look like trash.

I don't know what the consensus is on them but I still think they have a stigma despite becoming more popular over the last 25 years. I know way more working class people with them. The upper class friends I have who get tattoos, only get one and in a place where they are easily covered up (ankle, top of arm).

Oh yay, a tattoo thread. These always end well.

Henna is not permanent so I wouldn't have an issue with it.

Yes. Especially the new trend for covering large areas of the body, like thighs and lower legs, in them.

Also noticed neck and face tattoos are becoming more socially acceptable among those who aren't jailed criminals.

People without tats are now more individualistic.

Tattoos. Ah yes why not express your individuality by being just like everyone else?

    You sound fun!

Each to their own, I find tattoos can look extremely well on people but that depends on the artistry and complexity of the design as well as it's position on the body.

Got loads of tattoos and piercings when I was very young and immature. Regret it. Got some of them removed surgically which left bad scars. There was no laser removal back then. Well there was but it was too expensive. It is who I am today.

Every second gobsh1te has a tattoo these days. So yes, they are trash. I was immature enough to have a couple of tats done in my youth. I had one removed in more recent times but haven't bothered starting on the second one yet. They are magnitudes of order more expensive and painful to remove than having them done in the first place. Thankfully I was at least sensible enough to have them done in region where the are not typically noticeable unless say at the beach. I will hopefully get around to having the 2nd one removed at one point. I hate having it on display in front of the kids when going to the pool although I'm not too bothered by it otherwise. The thoughts of one of them coming home with a neck tattoo or something equally daft when the turn teenagers makes me shudder.

I give them no thought even though I have quite a large one myself upper left arm symbolic to myself as an Irish nationalist and I designed it myself if anyone is offended by it if they see it I couldn't care less. My point is if you have to worry about others sensitivities seeing how it's a one way street once it's done it's for good (other than lazer removal). If anyone worries about being seen as trashy or offending then perhaps a tattoo isn't for them. Artistry and thought are key, and they hurt like hell (I'm a wimp).

I would look ridiculous with a tattoo so wouldn't ever get one but some people can pull them off. They seem far more prevalent in the UK. The worst one I saw was a Nike logo on the small of a girl's back.

Permanent tattoos fail the "can you walk away easily if you change your mind or your circumstances change" test. I was involved in left wing politics in college, some of my comrades got political tattoos but I didn't. They later regretted it as their political views changed with age.

Tattoos seem to be ubiquitous among scumbags but also very common among the general population. Sheeple, in many cases.

Having tattoos is a big part of Thugmaxxing that incels talk about. Even if you aren't a thug, looking like one will get women interested in you so I suppose tattoos do have their uses for men.

  • Registered Users Posts: 119 ✭✭slither12

In my opinion, anyone I know with common sense that got a tattoo only got a very tiny one that is out of sight. I would compare a tattoo to a car logo on a luxury car. It compliments the car (like a small tattoo would on a good looking person). However if you had an Audi or Mercedes logo everywhere inside the car, it would start looking tacky. Same with tattoos.

They can look trashy all right...a lot depends on the individual wearing them, how they dress, how they act etc

They can look great too, its all a bit subjective really.

Imo a lot of them don't tend to age well , they ain't pretty on wrinkled flabby skin ..they make it look even worse than it does already

Basically if you are an unattractive flabby scummer the tats probably won't improve matters unsurprisingly (but that might not be your priority anyway) whereas if you are young and attractive and you haven't taken the lizard man option they can look quite good but remember you won't be that way forever and it's possible a lot of people might not think they look quite so good in the future and it may mean people have preconceptions about you regardless of whether that's fair or not.

Then sure maybe in the future if you don't have a tattoo you will be looked down upon, who knows, we could have animated adaptive tattoos that can change skin tone and colour in the future etc

Tats are just garbage on garbage. Never seen one where I could honestly say it enhanced an individual. Some say that they can be classy and arty, but truth is the skin is not a canvas worth painting. Most people get the same trash drawn on them. Celtic signs, Chinese Writing, their kids name, or my personal favourite, the name of their ex-partner 😂

Superhero, or Anime characters are popular now. Yeah, that Batman tat will look great when you're 50.

I have a BIL with a sleeve of the DC heroes on his arm. The Joker looks like a transvestite. Hardly the look he was going for and not exactly what I would call art. A friend of mine was stuck with the name of his ex-wife on his neck and 2 of his 3 children 🤣.

I considered putting my kids names on my upper arm with their birth dates, but only because I always forget their birth dates 😜

Whatever about your own neck, but tattooing your (ex) wife’s name on 2 of your 3 children is way out of line. Imagine how left-out the third child must feel?

Most people who sport tattoos have rubbish, trashy and deeply unimaginative ones. Tattoos have become so commonplace these days that not having one is becoming different and rather attractive - pretty much what having a tattoo was like about 30 years ago.

I have a small tattoo on the back of my right shoulder. Got it done 20 years ago and no regrets. It’s discreet. Some well-crafted tattoos done well can look good.

Face and neck tattoos - sorry to say, but they look scummy.

theres no cool or hip about tattoo,s now , large tattoos on the back, neck, legs are trashy, unless they are very small all face tattoo,s are awful.rule no 1 never put someones name as a tattoo .i think if you want to be cool now have no tattoo,s at all or just one small tattoo that is well designed and reflects your interests .i dont think a tattoo of any person superhero or anime character will look attractive on anyone.i think most large tattoo,s look crude and ugly

A real tattoo is probably better than henna, henna can cause severe allergic reactions and most hair dyes can't be used if you have had a henna tattoo. I have only seen one person's tattoo that actually really looked well, it was jungle flowers and leaves with a lizard on them. It was done in amazing colours. The colours would have to be redone but the art work itself was very well done. Even faded it would look good. I don't like sleeves or massive ones on legs. They just look like someone let a toddler draw on them with a Sharpie.

I find the excessive abstract scrawls, which mural the exposed backs and anal cleavage of South American sex workers, a real turn on, if I am honest? Especially if they are wearing a tight lycra or PVC tube, that is showing it all off and their fag butts have lipstick all over them? Oh yes baby pleeeeeeeease....

I can fathom people using them as identifiers. Like when I was a slave trader during the renaissance, I would definitely brand my assets before embarking them to sea. Privateers were notorious for ransacking slave ships, raping their slaves and stealing any fit ones who hadn't scurvy or the pox. But they would always be wary of stealing any of mine, the repercussions were fierce and every parrot owning guttersnipe sailing the seven seas knew it.

What does that star mean that all the sex workers have. Is that indicative of whatever gang they are in? Or just a stupid picture of a six figured star permanently stuck to their left or right shoulder, for ever and ever? If that doesn't bother you it probably should.

I was having casual sex with a female i met around 3 hours previously..... during our intercourse I noticed the words " Stevo for ever " as i was attempted to fellate her ear lobe whilst gently nailing her from behind, I lost my appetite in seconds. All i could think about was Steven Gerrard running towards the corner flag pointing his finger to the sky. It was a terrible interruption to a really nice ride.

I think tattoos are indicative of what someone wants to express visually to the outside world at one particular notion of existence or time.

I am always intrigued to see how beach culture has influenced their popularity. If you spend 10 hours a day in Copacabana you will see a lot more body art than you will on the shores of Capri.

I think they are rotten and only worn by thicks. There you have it. But that doesn't mean I don't like thicks, it just means I appreciate the way they label themselves. It saves time for everyone.

I know I'm a grumpy old man but I hate to see them on a pretty girl. I saw an old YouTube vid of Pan's People & a lot of the comments said how nice it was to see some attractive girls without a tattoo in sight, so perhaps it's not just me.

Some people are crap at drawing. Some people are amazing at drawing.

Some people create crap designs. Some people create amazing designs.

Some people have old tattoos with crappy ink. Some people have much more modern steadfast ink.

You might as well be asking how long a piece of string is.

Sorry Stevo, she said she was single?

    Are tattoos trashy? No

Is judging people based on choices they've made, that have exactly zero impact on anyone else trashy? Most definitely.

Some amount of perfect people on this thread passing judgement on others. Very pious buzz around the thread.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,284 ✭✭✭✭rob316

I have a few but not visible daily, they are personal to me so I like them there. However a good tattoo is pure art, something unique. Celtic crosses, tribal, dreamcatcher and all the other generic tattoo's I'm not a fan of.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 28,539 ✭✭✭✭murpho999

I'm surprised at people using the words trashy, trash and garbage.

As for tatoos nothing really against them. it's a personal choice but genuinely can say that I've never seen one that I thought looked nice.

Think the ink colour on skin looks terrible and the art style is just not appealing.

I just don't get people want to have the same design on them for the rest of their lives. After all tastes and fashions change and people get new clothes, new taste, new decor at hom etc.

Again, 'how long is a piece of string'.

Some people get tattoos because they like a band/football team/person.

Some people get tattoos for religious or cultural reasons.

Some people get tattoos to cover up accident and surgical scars.

Some people get them because they want to remember a moment in time every time they see it.

Some people get them in memorial to a dead loved one.

I don't have any tattoos myself as I'm a bit too fickle with designs and have a crazy high expectation when it comes to drawing standards and was always afraid of being stuck with something that looked a bit ****.

Hate to say it but a very large percentage of tattoos out there are really badly executed.

Not at tattoos are created equal. There's a difference between a tattoo like the one below:

    Henna tattoos are temporary.

I think tattoos can look really cool. Some people definitely overdo it though.

And then when skin gets old tattoos look disgusting. Nothing more trashy looking than a woman in her 50s or 60s or more with tattoos.

I think they look great on nice smooth skin, but on old skin they look disgusting.

Think about what you are saying about old tattoos though.

If you see a tattoo on a 60 or 70 year old, it was probably tattooed about 40-50 years ago. Tattoo technology has changed, ink technology has also changed.

It will be very interesting to see how current, good tattoos last the test of time compared to the old, blue, blurred anchors and the likes you see on older people now.

theyre a thing for the young and beautiful. Wouldn’t be arsed myself and never was. I certainly think there’s an element of attention seeking, vanity and even body dysmorphia at play in some people who get massive areas done. But alas, once old and wrinkly with gravity taking its toll, they’re horrible looking things.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,786 ✭✭✭DownByTheGarden

Would you want to risk it though. Old skin is old skin. The ink isnt going to stay the same shape it went on in.

There is a woman who i know to be mid 50s in my gym and she had a tattoo down the back and one down one leg. They make her look as trashy as a mouthful of rotten teethe would. Im sure they were nice when you could make out what they used to be before the tattoos wrinkled up :)

When you tattoo someone (well, if you go about it properly) you factor in aging skin and an aging tattoo. It's actually a fascinating process and incredibly interesting to see it done properly.

You basically work the tattoo so it has different ages and appearances throughout it's life as the pigment bleeds slightly over time.

As mentioned though, the vast majority of tattoos you see about the place are generally badly done and don't factor in things like this. I'm sure your 50s gym lady is a good example of one of them!

Of course, nothing can account for when you're much, much older and wrinklier. Although I'll argue that you've bigger things to worry about visually when you hit that stage of your life. 😁
