It doesn’t leave the Single Market, nor does it leave the Common Travel Area between UK and Ireland, so it’s invisible to Irish and UK citizens, even those carrying goods. But EU citizens are in a quandary: strictly, they are entering the UK without a transit visa, and are thus committing an offence. However, these roads were a long-standing “transit area” where border controls were concerned, and that legislation could be dug up again if needed..

I can’t see this ever being a problem. If the UK did decide to play hardball and enforce the border here, then every EU citizen resident in Ireland who uses these roads would just have to follow the strict legal procedure, and request a 48 hour Transit Visa for each trip, which would bury the British Home Office in such a mountain of requests that they’d back down within a couple of weeks.

Just in passing, there has to be some kind of prize for most misleading route number on offer here:

This is just inside the NI border from N53, heading East. The sign definitely indicates the direct road to Dundalk, but the A37 is way up on the North coast, between Limavady and Colraine...

I typed this days ago but forgot to hit Post on this at the time. The existing N53 through NI is lined with buildings and can't be upgraded online. I don't think there would be anything cheap or less controversial about it. Upgrading that road would be the definition of polishing a turd, the end result wouldn't be worth the cost of it. If taking that approach, it would be better to detrunk it to a R road after thses works, the current route doesn't justify the NatSec classification.

Linking it over to the N2 would be the most effective way of improving the road network in the area. It would only require 7 or 8km of new road and then users could travel north or south on DC. Like I said, the long term plan could be to extend west to link up other main towns in the area.

The British border force are not going to set up a checkpoint in Cullaville asking people their nationality! They'd be told to f*ck off.

The A37 is excluded from the UK HGV levy for instance.

The A37 number s so good that they decided to have two of them! This dates back to the original road numbering in NI n 1923.

Nobody gets confused as they are not near each other.

Contracts Signed with BAM for the N16 Lugatober scheme in Sligo. Full details on the council website but the highlights are:

    Cost - 28 Million

    Build Duration - 20 Months

Significant earthworks required as the route hugs a mountain

Upgrading and realignment of 2.54km of the existing N16 National Primary Road to Type 2 single carriageway standard

This is bad section of road with numerous tight bends, no hard shoulder for the most part and plenty of accidents over the years. As a local I'm delighted to finally see this one moving, its been talked about for years.

Yeah terrible stretch of road. Will be a huge improvement in terms of drivability and more so safety when done. I've only travelled it two or three times but it tells a lot in that I know exactly where you are talking about.

Does anyone have any information on the upgrade works being carried out on the R334 road between Ballinrobe and The Neale..? Road widening with addition of footpath on one side. Is this a council scheme or private landowners..? I can't find anything on it. Just wondering how far out this road works will go..? Could do with running it all the way to Cross village to be honest and on to Headford!!

If this is the scheme that they are currently working on (about one kilometre out the Neale Road from Ballinrobe) then it is merely widening to facilitate a turning lane for a new cemetery that is being built.

Oh right, thanks for the info. Every bit helps on that road as it's tight enough. Not a great road surface to drive with the amount of traffic and heavy vehicles on it

Heres the project page. It doesnt look like the most spectacular project on the map but the current road is barely Regional road status. Obvious dating from the times that people were driving horse and cart and windy roads were a benefit in hilly countryside.

Looking at it on Street View vs the new alignment, it looks an absolutely transformative scheme. Pricy, but some serious earthworks involved. Will be fantastic when complete.

Drove through this section last Friday. They seem to be flying through it. Will have it completed very quickly at this rate.

Is it just me or should they ditch the rest of the N16 south towards Sligo town and build a new part west to meet the N15? The N15 will eventually be upgraded along there too. No need for an N15 and N16 paralleling each other.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,434 ✭✭✭Charles Babbage

This would be fine if Sligo was the destination of most of the traffic. However, much of the N16 traffic is heading towards the N17 or N59, this requires an Eastern bypass of Sligo. Linking the N16 to the N15 just pushes more traffic across the present throughpass route.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,708 ✭✭✭serfboard

But were we not told by Sligo County Council, when they refused to build the bypass when they had the chance, that Sligo town was the destination of most of the traffic?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,738 ✭✭✭Pete_Cavan

I can't see an eastern bypass of Sligo ever happening. It obviously won't even be looked at for a decade. When/if it is ever considered, things will have changed a lot, I wouldn't be surprised if a tunnel from N4 to N15 was a better solution then.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,859 ✭✭✭veryangryman

Tunnel isn't the worst idea actually given the terrain. Cost of course but our parents could hardly have pictured a tunnel bypassing Limerick. Especially when a bridge would have done the job there

I drove on N16 last week.

I think I recall seeing works have started at Lugatober.

    Not sure if it deserves its own thread but tender has been issued for consultants for Eastern Garvogue Bridge and Approach Roads;

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 72 ✭✭cartoncowboy

At long last ! Us Sligo peeps have been waiting for this for a very long time. Delighted to see it finally out to tender even if its only for the consultancy piece - its moving !

This new road will be transformative for the town, given Sligo towns arduous one way system. This road and bridge will effectively cut that out if your heading to/from the North side of town.

I thought all hedge clearing had to be finished by March 1st for ecological reasons.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,972 ✭✭✭roadmaster

I think there is a clause somewhere that you can remove hedges during the season if its for certain construction if i remember from back in the day.

Also you can get an ecologist to a report on the hedge to say if there nesting if there is not you can pull it out with the report to support you

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,738 ✭✭✭Pete_Cavan

Maybe they are non-native and not of ecological value.

N73 Clogher Cross-Waterdyke realignment opened to traffic yesterday.

    Quite simply a transformative realignment.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,708 ✭✭✭serfboard

Massive safety improvements there, and a very good path/cycleway too.

    Great job.

I have noticed recently reading some regional papers on my travels that where some small road jobs have being completed such as the N52 Delvin/Mullingar locals are having major issues with the lack of filter lanes.

Is there reason they dont appear to put filter lanes in anymore

    From the article;

As there is no slip-lane for the left-turning traffic, motorist attempt to pass the slowing traffic, not realising there is are cars also in the centre of the road waiting to turn right.

Why do they think that drivers overtaking another car would not be looking ahead for traffic from the other direction? From Google Maps I can see that there is hatching in the middle of the road there so the right turning lane should be clearly visible, particularly if there is a car sitting in it.
