Boyd Barrett on telly last night again talking about the hypocrisy of opposing the Russian invasion but not Israeli aggression toward Palestine or the American invasion of Iraq. Although I take the point that aggressor nations should generally be opposed, I'm not sure what his conclusion is. Is it that because European countries did not do enough to prevent the USA invading Iraq, they should stand back and let Russia have at Ukraine in order to maintain moral consistency?

New satellite images show that Russian troops have stepped up construction of fortifications in the occupied regions of Ukraine.

Mostly in the South. They are afraid of a breakthrough of the Ukrainian Armed Forces to Melitopol and the Sea of Azov, as the Crimean bridge will be under threat.

I wish they could get some western air power, that is a lot of territory.

Well you'd assume from that the pilot(s) were told to go out and fly very close to the drone + harass it.

May not have intended to bring it down (I suppose they could just as easily have damaged their own aircraft and endangered themsleves with what they were doing), but it was obviously a risk they + people giving them their mission were willing to take.

Quite reckless from Russia, the NATO surveillance and help it gives to Ukraine must be really píssing them off!

They will say the drone was close to the Russian border. The US will show radar tracks and evidence the crash site (the one Russia themselves are at) are far from the Russian border. Then Russia will say it was a Ukrainian plane. When that fails they will say the footage is fake etc...

They always seem to have their lies lined up to be proven wrong.

Supposedly there are reports on social media coming from Crimea where the SU-27s landed, that one of them is damaged. That second pass looks to me like the SU-27 didn't just clip the propeller but impacted the drone significantly. The video feed going out would tend to suggest that the drone fuselage was impacted.

Russia shot down manned aircraft not in Russian airspace more than once during the Cold War and it didn't lead to open hostilities.

It would take a lot more than downing a drone to be considered an "act of war".

There are major Nato intelligence gathering air assets currently focusing on the Kaliningrad and Baltic areas at the moment. Before I break it down, take a look at all the military ( Note, these are just military aircraft) currently in the air over Europe as of this moment. Its an incredible sight and obviously daunting to any Russian strategist. Also the majority of these aircraft are only Logistical or Intel aircraft.

Over the Baltic, we see a Swedish AF G4 SIGNIT asset...

Joined by an RAF RC-135W SIGNIT asset

Also in the area, an E8 JSTARS asset

And a Swedish AF Saab SIGNIT

Clearly an intel-hoovering/ "we won't be intimidated" exercise or a prerequisite to a push by Ukraine.

Bearing in mind, these are aircraft with transponders on. There are many, many aircraft with transponders off flying in the theatre of operations.

edit: it's actually a little less... no "Yank" aircraft from Lithuania/Estonia and no "Brio" aircraft (that seems to be over Romania a lot recently)...

Not to mention the daily U2 and whatever drones

Russia and Chinese pilots have a history of doing close intercepts and then "showboating". Buzzing, doing stunts. In one case a Chinese pilot flew very close and then held up a sign with his email address. (The same pilot died due to a collision during a subsequent intercept).

That's what I see here. Harassing the drone. Probably trying to spray fuel on the optics. The contact was surely unintentional because it's only sheer luck that the Russian pilot landed safely.

I think it's a non-issue, neither side want to escalate over an accident. The Americans will keep flying drones and Russia will keep intercepting them. I'd say for a short time they won't do such close intercepts, they'll be a bit sheepish. But eventually they will start at it again.

I've been trying to figure out where the drone went down, taking into account marine activity on the Black Sea today.

The US mention that it went down 75 miles southwest of Crimea.

But here is where I've noticed some unusual activity on Marine Traffic:

It's quite a distance away. If you zoom into the highlighted area, you can see a cluster of marine vessels, positioned by satellite around a half hour ago, away from shipping lanes and designated as " tugs".

Someone is looking for something in this region!

Could be nothing, seems odd though.
