    True or false?

on one hand, my son is 21. he is out and about living life to the full, and Covid is gone, a thing of the past, if it ever happened at all.

On the other hand, my wife has health issues and the hospitals say if you get Covid, then unless it is a life threatening emergency, you will NOT, under any other circumstances, have a general anaesthetic for at least 7 weeks after testing negative again.

this is a serious concern for She who must be obeyed.

another son lives in London and cant remember the last time he saw anyone wearing a facemask.

Son #3 is a doctor in Wales and understandably is still following Covid protocols.

In South Antrim (where I am) Shops all still have hand gel at the doors, and maybe 1 in 20 folk in the shops (wifey included) are still masked.

whats the general vibe about the place?

cool kids gotta get out and breed, and oldies are nearly dead anyway? (mind you, our Parents (in their late 80s) are less Covid secure than the kids!)

Personally i think unless you are directly affected by it , the pandemic is dead and buried. After 2 years of lockdowns, mass trauma and economic strife there is almost an unspoken collective agreement to erase this whole experience and return to pre-Covid life as soon as possible. Look at the pubs, clubs, hotels and restaurants: booked out every single week with all manner of events by people who want to make up for lost time.

If we could only get rid of those stupid Covid stickers on peoples cars that would be great. They are completely irrelevant now and id wager that 50% of them are just chancing their arm and have no connection to frontline workers at all.

Covid is going to be around for years to come. Most likely newer and weaker strains of the virus, akin to average flu.

Life has to return to normal. Particularly for people's mental wellbeing.

If you feel you are in a vulnerable category then by all means get a jab if you want.

I'm still being careful as much as i can, still wearing my mask in shops and on public transport and to be honest i think i will remain doing that for a while longer because thankfully i have no got a cold or lost my voice this year and i like to keep it that way. besides that i've been travelling this year back to pre covid days.

i completely understand folks wanting to get back to normal, but this virus ain't going any where for a while and its so random

COVID is over. It was dangerous when it was a novel virus because nobody had immunity to it. By now everyone has either had at least 1 vaccine or has had the virus at least once.

Some people may still get very sick, some people will still die. But that's influenza

It’s still out there, and in certain settings I mask. I still wouldn’t like to catch it, so a mask here and there hopefully lessens my chances.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 28,784 ✭✭✭✭looksee

I would be technically considered vulnerable, though I am generally healthy. I don't wear masks except where I have to (doctor's surgery, and tbh I think that is a good idea anyway, given they are centres of disease distribution), I am fully vaccinated, I do the supermarket trolly cleaning (again a good idea, I always felt even before Covid that they were manky), so as far as I am personally concerned its over. I could yet be proved wrong. Anyone prefers or needs to wear a mask, good luck to them, not my business.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,448 ✭✭✭BrianD3

I'm still wearing my FFP2 in the supermarket, was in there yesterday and out of 100+ people, I saw nobody else wearing a mask of any kind.

I see no downsides to wearing a good mask in a crowded shop - reduces chance of getting a cold, flu or covid, all of which I can do without. Also means people are much less likely to recognise me or try to start a stupid conversation.

If former mask zealots are now not wearing it show how sheeple like they are. Wear a mask because de man on de telly told them to. Scream at the unmasked. Then at some undefined point, "the pandemic ends" and mask wearing is soon forgotten.

Only time now is at the dentist which still are mandating a mask to enter, which I can see why that might happpen.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,184 ✭✭✭riclad

    Why dont people wear masks

At least 95 per cent of people got vaxxed and boosted. I think the attitude is everyone can get covid but if your vaxxed its like getting a cold

Not a serious problem. I went to.hospital to pay a bill. Theres security there everyone has to wear a mask all the time inside the building

Masks also stop colds and other infections not just covid from spreading

If You are a young healthy person you should be able to live a normal life and go out and meet people as if it was 2019 as long as you are vaccinated. Im sure doctors and hospitals are still busy with covid patients and dentists have to take precautions

Covid will be with us for years. Theres people arriving here from europe every day. Theres no way we will ever be covid free I still use cleaning dispensers even though im vaxxed

Meanwhile the hse is still spending millions treating covid patients

Maybe airports should have covid tests for all passengers visitors as it works in china

In america covid is still the primary cause of fatalitys for people under the age of 60

You wear a mask in hospitals certain places to reduce the chance of infection even if you are vaccinated

Not because someone on tv told you to do so. Theres still people out there who never got vaxxed or maybe they are junkies or people who dont believe in vaccination or think its a government conspiracy

Vaccination does not stop you from getting covid it just makes it less of a threat to your health

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33,997 ✭✭✭✭NIMAN

From what I see at work and out socialising of late, it is more or less 99% forgotten about.

If 1 in every 100 is wearing a mask, that's the height of it. I'd guess it's actually a lot less. The people I do see wearing them tend to be a lot older and I'd guess more vulnerable, and if I see a younger person wearing one I assume they are a carer.

Still see the odd hand gel bottle about, but never see anyone using them any more.

Still have to wear a mask entering all the GP practices, but would expect that.

People are still catching it, a sibling had it last week for the 2nd time. This time she said it was very mild. Couple of days of a flu and better again. But difference is people aren't afraid to catch it now.

Seeing how most of the world is getting on with life again, it's strange to see how draconian China is at present.

Yes , the mass psychosis has thankfully passed , small number of (Japanese style jungle dwelling soldiers circa 1951 ) people still clinging on to the mask wearing drama

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,503 ✭✭✭✭Mad_maxx

If covid policy was ever anything more than ham political theatre , we would not have let in sixty thousand people from a region where vaccine uptake was extremely low

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,370 ✭✭✭SuperBowserWorld

Ah, get out and enjoy life before the next pandemic, godzilla attack, nuclear armageddon, ...

Also, get a less severe form to help combat a more severe form of the disease.

If people really want to save lives they could donate money to the poor worldwide. Or drive less and walk more.

I have a private clinic and I and my co-worker wear masks when anyone else enters the clinic (not when we are there on our own). Most of my patients would be 60+ and I’m amazed how little they wear a mask - they would be considered high risk with co-morbidities - but they aren’t bothered. IMO, I think they are foolish but I’m sick of saying it to them - I also use a screen so between my mask and screen I’m doing as much as I can. I also only have one patient in at a time and still practice social distancing in the clinic and when I’m in queues etc. I have patients every week cancelling due to Covid, its not gone away and I don’t want it again!

Covid was never even remotely dangerous to the vast, vast majority of people.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25,806 ✭✭✭✭Strumms

Vaccines have really been a revelation.

people still care about COVID though. Will for a while.

it’s always been a balancing act. Between life and living.

Still managed to kill 6 million people worldwide in just over two years, e.g. one in every 300 Americans, threatened to overwhelm national health systems, pushed health staff to their limits (and beyond) all over the world. And all of that was with intense measures against it, unthinkable if we'd done nothing.

Any interviews or comments I've read from ICU nurses and doctors paints a very, very different picture from these "it's just a little flu" revisionists.

    @riclad

If You are a young healthy person you should be able to live a normal life and go out and meet people as if it was 2019 as long as you are vaccinated.

Why? There is no actual reason for anyone really under the age of 50 (I'd even suggest 60, others might say 40 and others again 30) who are healthy to get a vaccination. Mostly like even with the initial version you'd probably wouldn't have even noticed you had it, the new strains are supposedly less sever and even if you are vaccinated you will spread COVID if you get it, as it doesn't prevent this.

and when did they get the vaccine, should we have been boosted at this stage?

A relation of mine who has Crohn's disease contracted Covid for the first time about two weeks ago.

He remains very ill and is isolated at home, being warned that at this moment of extremely low immunity, if he got Flu or another virus circulating, it could affect many of his organs and kill him.

Its well for those for whom Covid can be largely ignored and left in the past, but in public settings its everyone's responsibility to limit the spread of all diseases, at a time that they are taking out whole classes and workplaces.

You'll never tell who, out in public, has reduced immunity, just be sensible and assume everyone has, especially you feel that you are carrying a dose yourself.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,503 ✭✭✭✭Mad_maxx

That was patently clear by about June of 2020 , we didn’t know what we weee dealing with at the start so the lockdown approach was understandable

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,184 ✭✭✭riclad

A million people died in america from covid, you,ll likely only end up in the icu if you are not vaxxed and boosted, you dont go to the icu unless you have very serious health problems ,

it seems every actor famous celeb has got covid at some point , but they recovered as they were fully vaxxed, eg james cameron film director has covid right now ,most people recover after 10 days to a week if they are vaccinatted , i presume 95 per cent of people living here are vaxxed , if any person wants to get a job in a cafe, night club restaurant i presume they would need to show they are vaxxed

I question that ric lad. Cameron (68) is an older man so perhaps for him its important to get the vax, and it helped him to recover quickly, did he take any other medication and also how healthy is he?

You'll most likely end up in ICU due to age and co-morbidities, your vaccination status for a young/healthy individual make this much less.

If you look at the stats for Ireland we had a much worse death rate this summer compared to last, while winter this (currently) seems to have dropped significantly but I suggest being exposed to the virus by the general population may have more to do with this than the actual vaccine that wans as time goes on.

Any celebs go to ICU due to COVID over the last 2 years?

I don't know anywhere in hospitality in Ireland asking for proof of vaccination.

COVID is certainly over now as a serious illness but now we have to deal with the fallout of the lockdown policies.

Inflation, debt, damaged global economy and excess deaths as cancers and other illnesses went undetected.

Id love to see a proper investigation into our handling of COVID. We need to be sure if another pandemic occurs that we are following science and data, which was sadly lacking from our handling.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,503 ✭✭✭✭Mad_maxx

most were probably less than two years away from death anyway, lockdown was about extending the life of those aged eighty five to eighty eight

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,583 ✭✭✭✭elperello

I still wear a mask in busy shops and on flights.

Nobody in real life has ever said anything negative to me about wearing masks.

As far as I can see most people are happy to let others make their own mind up.

I'm in Ireland I would assume people in certain jobs will be asked have they been vaccinated eg people who work in cafes or upmarket restaurants .I don't expect staff to ask the public ,have you been vaccinated? Would a dentist employ someone who is not vaxxed?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,263 ✭✭✭RoTelly

No, I don't think so. At this point you do not have to be vaccinated before starting a job or that an employer can ask if you are vaccinated or that an employer insists you be vaccinated.

If the person is the best qualified then yes no matter if the are vaxxed or not you employ them.

Should we ask our medical professionals if they have been vaxxed?

True heroes of their time. They didn't wear masks, social distancing rules didn't apply to them, they didn't get vaccinated and took up 80% of ICU wards. They really stuck it to the man.

I honestly couldn't give a sh!te about covid. Covid has had its day as far as I'm concerned, time to forget about it and live your life

Yes how smart you are to refuse a Vax that can save your life and also stop you from infecting other vulnerable people that may be older than you or not as healthy as you no man is an island yes you are really a rebel

or maybe you are a stupid idiot

If they government was giving away pills that make you live 10 years longer

some people would not take them and say

its some kind of mind control scam

They don't stop the virus from spreading, they thought it would but sadly they were wrong.

It would have been a great achievement if it worked that way.

That's why now they're suggesting vaccination for the vulnerable and elderly first and foremost.

Healthy people have an option, but the vaccines alone won't stop the spread.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,609 ✭✭✭Tonesjones

No possibly. Very few died from Covid alone.

Pre existing conditions, old age, obesity. These were the difference of a cold or death

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,263 ✭✭✭RoTelly

This is partially correct. TBH, Having looked at the stats that the government initially gave I will agree, yes, but then as those stats reversed they stop publishing meanwhile those same stats showed of those that died 80% were fully vaxxed while 20% were not vaxxed. These are HSE figures. If you can give me those stats for the very few currently in ICU with covid over the last few months I am happy to be corrected on this. But I don't see any up to date Irish stats. I doubt the stats reversed for deaths. Last week 39 deaths were reported.

Again the vax does not stop you from infecting others weather vulnerable or not, while on balance for a healthy/young person the vax generally seem lacking any benefits, with the vax if you get infected it will be mild, same if you are young/healthy and you will spread Covid if you are vaxxed or not.

Cameron didn't go to the launch of Avatar because he got covid, it was because he could still spread covid, if he was a 25 years old (and healthy) an unvaxed most likely he would have the same outcome.

You should during winter months consider supplement with Vit D, Vit K2, with a balanced diet, keep active and avoid crowded places where possible. This will help to prevent almost most winter bugs.

If anything the pandemic should have proved how important a balanced diet and exercise is to helping your immune system.

Do people really still think that if you aren't vaccinated covid is a death sentence? Each booster has had decreasing uptake, so most people would be 'unvaccinated' at this point, considering protection wanes within months. Anywhere that still publishes these stats show that most hospitalisations and deaths are in vaccinated and boosted people now and have been for a while.

I don't wear masks anymore except if I go to the GP or the Hospital which is thankfully very rare.

I see very few people wearing them. The odd person on public transport wears them but that is about it. I still sanitise my hands when I go to the shops and if they have no sanitiser I use my Dettol hand wipes.

I think we need to just live with it.

Have now had it twice (as of last week🙄).Have wasted enough of my life on this virus.Somehow it caused asthma to be "switched on" for me first time round (don't ask!), and I am learning to deal with that, but I only tested and stayed at home for a few days last week out of courtesy for my fellow workers and family members, and due to the time of year.

Life goes on otherwise.I loathed every second of all of those restrictions we had to put up with it.I got the 3 vaccines, I did what I was meant to do, and I have moved on.

If you chose to wear a mask or wash her hands that is 100% your perogative.A person shouldn't be criticised for it by any means, but it is personal choice.I could have picked it up absolutely anywhere last week - the most likely culprit is a restuarant I went to for a christmas lunch with my work team.I can't filter my life to suit covid, or risk assess every situation for germs I might catch - while my kids go into primary classrooms every day and are exposed to a battery of germs they might bring home - so we're moving on.
