do they own that site or is it rented off stakelums.

im not suprised. last year i went in enquiring about a new van. they never got back to me.

It looks like another Indian restaurant is going to try to succeed where Shimla used to be....

Also The granary bar and kitchen will be opening soon in what was The watermill/ Dwans brewery.

    Good to see!!

    I think they own it.

wasn’t only Barlo. There was a shortage of vans nationwide, there still is. Cars are prioritised with this chip shortage.

Barlo's own the site. I'm surprised they have stayed going this long....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,524 ✭✭✭the_pen_turner

where are they going . i forgot to stop and read the sign today

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,279 ✭✭✭Oops!

I'm not sure, leaving Thurles i'd imagine... All business will be done from Clonmel and KK i'd say. They built that building just as the country was going to pot. Back in 2010 there was alot of staff let go and it was looking bad for the place for a while after that.

Gourmet Butchers closed. Cited rising costs, but that’s everywhere. I’d say it’s more to do with the majority of people in Thurles spending their money on snack boxes in Supermacs than buying real food. There’s no jobs and everybody gave up on life a long time ago.

Morrisseys Everyday is like Sunday would be about Thurles if it was near the coast.

Could a Dealz possibly open in Barlo’s site? The Dealz in Tipp town is in what used to be a car dealers.

Has anyone been in the Amber petrol station next to Donal Ryan’s car sales lately? They’ve got a little American candy shop going on in there, twinkies, Reese’s etc. and all the American cereals, all imported from the States.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,524 ✭✭✭the_pen_turner

hopefully . i wast in there but it looks good driving past

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,524 ✭✭✭the_pen_turner

thats interesting . i must pop in .

    whats it like

  • Registered Users Posts: 29 Longwayjump1991

The stock is fairly decent actually, they have a good range there, a lot more than you’d expect a local garage to have.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,524 ✭✭✭the_pen_turner

have langtons in kilkenny bought bowes . wonder what their plan is

i just heard it from a busy body but they are usually right

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,232 ✭✭✭TooTired123

It’s a pity to have that place sitting there doing nothing though. Langtons have the money to turn it into a hotspot

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,164 ✭✭✭shmeee

Sold for under half a million, but I believe it ain't Langton's. Not Eamon himself anyway, maybe some connections. And a few local lads named as being involved then in the running of it.

It was about 2 months or so when that word was about and nothing since.

Can't imagine a venture like that in the middle of a cost-of-living crisis was the brightest idea. People aren't going to go spending a fortune on stuff like that willy-nilly

Curious to see if ANY market research was done

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,524 ✭✭✭the_pen_turner

some serious flooding there at the week end

what are they doing at bowes .some people are telling a roundabout , other saying otherwise

  • Registered Users Posts: 29 Longwayjump1991

Yeah I wonder what the reason for it is? Perhaps they get American stock on the cheap? It seems so random to have an American candy store in a random petrol station. If it was me I would have it as a stand alone shop in the square, or one of those traditional sweet shops would be nice in the square, it’s gone very empty looking up there. As you say though there is a cost of living crisis, I’d be happy if they opened a Dealz and an Iceland.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,524 ✭✭✭the_pen_turner

thats not going to improve anything. probably make it worse. what are they thinking

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 963 ✭✭✭mikep

Good to see that The Granary is opening on Friday.

In the former Watermill/ Dwans brewery/ Stakelums site.

Hopefully it will be a good spot that does decent food.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,029 ✭✭✭tastyt

Seen a few pics and videos of the granary and jeez it looks like a very plush top class set up . Hope it’s not too top class if you know what I mean and prices people out of there

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,882 ✭✭✭lisasimpson

About time.mitchel house has c o me competition. Was there earlier in the year and thought it was a bit pricey for what we got

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,922 ✭✭✭Grab All Association

Two travellers fighting in the middle of liberty square blocking traffic causing major congestion. People coming out of business filming it and rubbernecking on the road. A right circus it was and will ruin the towns reputation nationally. Absolute clowns. Thankfully I’ll be leaving Thurles in the next few weeks, just when you think the place can’t sink any lower. Gardai just came and broke it up. No arrests made and I presume no charges brought against them. Even council employees filming it. A dark day for Thurles. It’s like everyone is aiming to be a scumbag. There’s no jobs and no hope for the place.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,882 ✭✭✭lisasimpson

A but its their culture. Saw the video too not one half decent punch either in the 2 and a half mins of it. It was embrassing all the ones standing around videoing it like a schoolboys fight after school.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,524 ✭✭✭the_pen_turner

those 2 guys should be ashamed of themselves. not a decent punch landed. just showboating and dick measuring. iv seen todlers have better fights than that.

i was there near Supermacs on the phone to someone. It started over at the AIB bank, they blocked the Limerick Local Link from pulling out. I seen the traffic warden filming something and thought it was the traffic in the square for the council. Then I seen a load of school girls and supermacs employees coming out and filming it. it then moved throughout the square. Imagine our taxes through Tipperary County Council and social welfare are funding this. State sponsored .

it caused traffic jams heading out past Clongour. LIT, Drish etc. the gardai too with their crappy Hyundai’s parked on the road then

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,882 ✭✭✭lisasimpson

They came up the street as if your coming in from templemore. Think theres a family funeral in the town these days so they will be busy

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,205 ✭✭✭✭Mantis Toboggan

Jaysus you'd think they'd find a decent place to have a scrap instead of in the middle of the road, crazy stuff, no doubt the garda did nothing.

More fightening again this evening. Going to be a long few days for the town

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,279 ✭✭✭Oops!

The Granery is being opened by the owner of Mitchel house Michael Dwyer..... Expect more of the same in this place....

any word on jysk.. someone was telling me the word around town is its closing

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,882 ✭✭✭lisasimpson

That wont have lasted long. Tbh i was surprised they opened in thurles...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,524 ✭✭✭the_pen_turner

me too. thurles is not really a town for that kind of shop. its more of a few times a year shop than a regular shop to visit. once the forst wave is over i couldnt see any demand that would keep it open

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,882 ✭✭✭lisasimpson

Something like mr price would be more suitable to a town like thurles

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,029 ✭✭✭tastyt

Jesus the town is a graveyard for business

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,922 ✭✭✭Grab All Association

It’s highly unlikely Jysk will close. There’s smaller towns with the same type of Jysk store that haven’t. You can’t believe any of the rumours around town. I moved to the midlands a month ago, less pram pushers, less junkies and PhoneWatch aren’t calling at all to say the shock sensor went off.

It really is a dive of a town.....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,922 ✭✭✭Grab All Association

My girlfriend was in Thurles Shopping Centre. They closed the toilet for cleaning so the lady said to her to use the disabled toilet. when she was coming out two red head crotch goblins said “are you some kind of handicap (Disneys goofy style laugh) then we observed them chatting to girls in Ursuline uniforms at the claw machines who were about 14/15. They had car keys and were at least in their early 20s. Protected species funded by our taxes. Thankfully I’m only in Thurles one day a week. 99% of the people are fine. The minority seems to be getting bigger in numbers though. You’d wonder what tourists and shoppers from the elsewhere in the country think of it. My girlfriend is from London and as bad as it is there, it’s confined to certain parts. Thurles they are everywhere

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,232 ✭✭✭TooTired123

My self and hubby went. Too expensive for what we got if you understand. My burger and chips was no different to what you’d get in any chipper in town. Disappointed.

  • Registered Users Posts: 29 Longwayjump1991

What’s the best place to go for dinner in the night time in town? Was thinking of trying the Granary.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 963 ✭✭✭mikep

Maybe try Mitchel House as its consistent. Or perhaps the Granary to check it out. The restaurant attached to the Arch Bar is supposed to be good.

Stars of India is good too if that's your thing.
