scanlons closed now . how many empty shops on the sqyare no , cant be far off 10

A sure lets put another coffee shop in there too 🙄

Seriously though what is left in the square now. Frank Roches, 3 banks, premier insurance, a couple of pubs amd coffee shops, 2 opticians, supermacs. Not the most attractive of offering unless you need to go to the bank.

No bypass etc is going to improve the square. Thurles need the locals to be more positive about the town. Compared to nenagh the attitude is terrible. The small business people of nenagh are v positive about the town and alway talk the town up. Even Templemore when they lost their town council the locals got together and formes grouping between the develipment association and another group a sustainable town association. Thurles still seems to be suffering PTSD from the sugar factory closure.

I know some people would totally object to this but when you think of the likes of carrick on shannon becoming a hen/stag destination how come thurles never did. Wouldnt take much its on the main cork dublin rail line and with little creativity could have a smiple weekend package. The likes of Hayes or Park avenue (or whatever that building is called by the train station) advertise a package simple 1/2 night stay, ticket into a match in the studium possible pass to a night in dog track followed by pass into nightclub. Noone has tried that. Plenty of websites traget that business to ge the word out. Doesnt take much

Also town needs more accomodation for students. Its great this talk of expanding the course like Home Ec in the Mary I campus but the town doesnt fully get to benefit as many of the students have no choice but to commute. Again these students would spend money in supermarkets, pubs coffee shops, cinema, beauticans, babera, business for taxis mid week etc.

Its not exactly a town that going to attract big mutlinational but there are things that local businesses can do improve the place. Its needing people with the right attitude and get up and go. There is a lot of dereliction around thurles that needs to be tackled. Some would be ideal student accomodation

Thurles Milk 1ltr cartons now come from Lee Strand Co-Operative Creamery in Tralee. Their cheese came from Newmarket Co-op a few years back. What a fraud!

Re Nenagh above , I totally agree the main streets are buzzing with small local shops .

The difference is they don’t really have a shopping centre within walking distance of the middle of the town.

if you think about it , the square would be buzzing if all the footfall and shops that use the shopping centre were still in it

The difference with Thurles and derelict shops in recent years is that most of it is down to retirement of the shop owners.

Thurles weathered the recession fairly well but in the last ten or so years a lot of family owned shops just weren't passed down to the next generation.

Remember Fiona Looney compared the square's boutiques to shopping on Bond Street in London? You had Stakelums, Joanne's, House of Elegance and First Editions. Grace's and Castle Boutique remain.

Tipperary Town on the other hand fell victim to the downturn big time and of course Dunnes/Tesco out the Limerick Road.

I don't know how you tackle the problem when you have a family business that doesn't continue to the next generations.

I'd hate to see Thurles turn into a stag destination though.

Definitely the expansion of Mary I could be very positive.

A boardwalk along a developed river with emphasis on The Source and library along with a nice eatery in there could be a start too.

To thine own self be true

any word around the town on what the plan is for the munster . who have they lined up

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,830 ✭✭✭lisasimpson

Saw on media reports a supermarket. But all the major supermarket players are already in the town. Really hope the upper floors of the munster are turned into student apartments. Mary I intend to offer more courses from the thurles campus. In order for the town to benefit from Mary I,it needs the student living locally

all the big players are already in town except m and s and iceland. would either be worth the hassel to come into a smallish town with loads of supermarkets already.

the planning talks about trollies so it has to be something like that.

the munster is a wierd location for a shop . its close but still too far for foot traffic and another supermarket wouldnt really draw the crowd.

the only shop that would pull the crowd is pennies but they dont have trollies

Dealz, homesavers or Iceland. Home savers is one of his tenant’s in Nenagh.

Marks and Spencer’s won’t exactly be expanding in Ireland due to supply issues caused mostly by brexit. Dealz, Iceland etc have suppliers in Ireland. Coca Cola, Tayto, Carroll’s etc.

i must say the Iceland in Nenagh is really small versus the one in Clonmel. great place to get lamb burgers. Dunnes Stores used to sell the nicest lamb burgers but for some reason don’t stock them anymore.

i dont think i was ever in iceland.

dealz would be ok but i would rather mr price

homesaver is not a shop i like at all. i hate the big long walk to make you pass all the pound shop crap that you dont want.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,830 ✭✭✭lisasimpson

Now that ye say it, could be mr price. Same guy was behind the development of the old oconnors site in neagh and theres a mr price over by it

I think Iceland would be a nice addition to Thurles, isn’t there a car park at the back of the Munster they could use? A Dealz would also sit nicely next to it, I think these two chains would do well due to cost of living crisis and give people the option to get cheap deals etc.

  • Registered Users Posts: 7,507 ✭✭✭the_pen_turner

there is a car park. i dont know much about iceland

  • Registered Users Posts: 7,507 ✭✭✭the_pen_turner

whats going on with the road out to the horse and jockey. they have lines put on now. i thought they were putting in a cycle lane etc. what was the point in resurfacing if they improved nothing

  • Registered Users Posts: 29 Longwayjump1991

It’s basically a shop that specialises in mainly frozen food, not the healthiest but prices are cheap.

do they own that site or is it rented off stakelums.

im not suprised. last year i went in enquiring about a new van. they never got back to me.

It looks like another Indian restaurant is going to try to succeed where Shimla used to be....

Also The granary bar and kitchen will be opening soon in what was The watermill/ Dwans brewery.

    Good to see!!

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,917 ✭✭✭Grab All Association

    I think they own it.

wasn’t only Barlo. There was a shortage of vans nationwide, there still is. Cars are prioritised with this chip shortage.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,253 ✭✭✭Oops!

Barlo's own the site. I'm surprised they have stayed going this long....

  • Registered Users Posts: 7,507 ✭✭✭the_pen_turner

where are they going . i forgot to stop and read the sign today

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,253 ✭✭✭Oops!

I'm not sure, leaving Thurles i'd imagine... All business will be done from Clonmel and KK i'd say. They built that building just as the country was going to pot. Back in 2010 there was alot of staff let go and it was looking bad for the place for a while after that.

Gourmet Butchers closed. Cited rising costs, but that’s everywhere. I’d say it’s more to do with the majority of people in Thurles spending their money on snack boxes in Supermacs than buying real food. There’s no jobs and everybody gave up on life a long time ago.

Morrisseys Everyday is like Sunday would be about Thurles if it was near the coast.

Could a Dealz possibly open in Barlo’s site? The Dealz in Tipp town is in what used to be a car dealers.

Has anyone been in the Amber petrol station next to Donal Ryan’s car sales lately? They’ve got a little American candy shop going on in there, twinkies, Reese’s etc. and all the American cereals, all imported from the States.
