Well, neither Mark Little nor Tommie Gorman got to be chair of RTE. it's Siún Ní Raghallaigh, formerly of TG4. Let's see what she can do.

When most of us say "social justice" we mean equality under the law opposition to prejudice, discrimination and equal opportunities for all. When Social Justice Activists say "social justice" they mean an emphasis on group identity over the rights of the individual, a rejection of social liberalism, and the assumption that unequal outcomes are always evidence of structural inequalities.

Good choice, she has experience as a TV executive and as a Board member. But she has a hard task taking over from 2 do nothing chairs over the last 15 years.

Well TG4 was creative in programming at the very least. But we'll see how she deals with the inertia and the apparatchiks protecting their various fiefdoms.

Nor Fergal O'Rourke, whoever he is, the other guy on the shortlist. Must have felt a need to broaden the search...

Going back to the last-moment decision to have the Quinn documentary on RTÉ 1, what difference would it make in terms of RTÉ 1's audience during the World Cup? If viewers of RTÉ TV want to watch the World Cup, they'll watch the World Cup, regardless of what RTÉ 1 has to offer.

RTÉ ONE should not really feel the effects of the world cup, its a largely different audience. Their worry is weather or not audience will return. If RTÉ in total get a 26% share in both Nov and Dec they won't really care. I am only giving an opinions based on what few figures I have seen/can get over the last decade or so. All of which is available to everyone, I am not involved in the industry.

@iseegirls might have a different view point, they've seen the same figures and might have a differing opinion, sorry if I am dragging you into this.

Didn't we establish a page or two back that the chair of RTE is basically just a figurehead - so does it matter who gets it?

The chair has responsibly to the company. They should be able to progress some issues in the organisation. Moya Doherty sat on some committee relating to higher wages and payment for big programmes. She and her successor should be able to bring some form of reform. IMO Moya and her predecessors took these role as simply a figure head a gift bestowed upon her by the Minister.

    Here's the Examiners view !

8 years of Moya Doherty was an opportunity missed on her reappointment 5 years ago? Bizzare welcome from the press, oh! Does someone with experience know anything about media other than TV and Film!

@political analyst I am not sure that RTÉ would quick air a doc just because it didn't get an airing in January, I can understand the delay, but I would wonder why it couldn't wait another week.

On RTE media Toy Show The Musical is currently having more frequent ads than The National Lottery which is currently the highest spending organisation in the state advertising on all forms of media, will there be an audit as to where public funds have been blown?

After it's over no figures will be released about ticket sales, citing "commercial sensitivity"

Then the whole thing will be wiped from history and never spoken of again.

Amazing how little any media outlets are giving to the video of Leo in a nightclub, sucking face with someone who isn't his partner.

From what I've heard, it's had a very serious knock-on effect. When the PR message 'Mr Varadkar is in an open relationship' came out, apparently nobody told his partner that they were.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,959 ✭✭✭political analyst

I thought nobody cared about that sort of thing anymore.

The epic financial fail that the TSTM is heading towards will be off-set somewhat by the unprecedented amount of 'Govt' ads running at the moment - Its been turned up to 11. They seem to have ramped it up about 3 weeks ago which would coincide with the six week run into Christmas which I would think there's a premium ad rate for those weeks. There has been an increase of those ads on other stations too but RTE are getting the lions share.

I think every time RTE says - "The former Sinn Fein councillor Jonathan Dowdall..." they get another ad.

It's more about him cheating on his partner. I mean, the Finland Prime Minister attended a party get together, and RTE were covering that, no problem. Despite it being a non-story.

Leo is discovered to be cheating on his boyfriend, and nothing in the media. Very odd.

I think RTÉ covered the Sanna Marin controversy as they would with any world news story, i.e. if the BBC and Sky News cover it .... . It's a bit like some male viewers tuning in to see Sharon Ní Bheoláin.😉

Most viewers in Ireland probably couldn't care less about the state of the relationship between Leo and his boyfriend.

Matt Hancock cheating on his wife is a better example, which was a big story for a few days. Even RTE reported on it. Odd how our political class don't get the same treatment?

RTE never being leaders plays a role of course, as they seem to judge newsworthiness based on what the rest of the media are doing, which says so much about their sorry state.

“The man who lies to himself can be more easily offended than anyone else. You know it is sometimes very pleasant to take offense, isn't it? A man may know that nobody has insulted him, but that he has invented the insult for himself, has lied and exaggerated to make it picturesque, has caught at a word and made a mountain out of a molehill--he knows that himself, yet he will be the first to take offense, and will revel in his resentment till he feels great pleasure in it.”- ― Fyodor Dostoevsky, The Brothers Karamazov

Can you not see that story has ramifications beyond "government minister pictured snogging somebody other than his publicly acknowledged partner"?

Mr Hancock said: "I accept that I breached the social distancing guidance in these circumstances.

Is it me, or is RTE very, very late in promoting it's Christmas line-up?

Even the Christmas RTE Guide adverts that would be all over the TV, they're non-existent. Only thing they've advertised is....sigh.... Celebrity Fittest Family.

Or maybe Christmas TV will be absolutely horrendous this year.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,306 ✭✭✭RoTelly

TG4 has announced there line up a while back, VMTV have never really done anything.

    In the meantime

seriously they haven't got a clue.

As for the Tainiste and coverage, of course RTÉ should have covered it. The Tainiste is has been acting like a teenager for the last few years. Sitting out in the park during COVID, oh but he needs to let his hair down we all do it, picking his nose while at a festival during lockdown in a different country, oh but we all need to let our hair down .... cheating on his partner ... but sure we all do that ... where is the line? If it were any other politician it would be plastered all over the papers and RTÉ would have a few questions for that politician.

Yes we need to get on with our lives etc but there are times when a politicians needs to remember they represent their people, and this is always the case, if they want to bring people back to their home and do things in private let them, but once you bring it into the public domain it needs to be address.

Indeed for many people the Matt Hancock affair wasn't just about COVID, but the fact that he was having an affair, both need to grow up.

What was Parnell advised to do : Resign, Return and Retire.

The gang from the 2fm brekkie show are getting their own Christmas hidden camera show special. In RTÉ desperate attempt to make them relevant.

In relation to my last post 2 things: -

    1. No RTÉ could not find anything better to do with €80,000 and aren't we lucky we didn't get an invite to the RDS back in August.
    2. I'd rather watch Leo in the Disco on repeat this Christmas eve!

The Guardian have picked up the story on Leo, going to be harder for RTE to try and ignore it.

Is that not just a repeat of the one they tried last year? The one with Doireann and Dermot, that featured former 'alleged' paedophile Judge Brian Curtin? Sank like a brick. Probably had the same amount of viewers that an average episode of Nationwide (a show that garners about 45, 000 viewers on average) gets.

We have this ridiculousness in the...Sunday Times? God, LON is back on her BS... that relationship with Richard Chambers must be floundering. (I guess even the Irish Examiner got tired of her).

Vogue and Joanne McNally apparently covered it on their podcast (I haven't listened to it) and they found it hysterical. Now Micheal Martin wants to bring in new Social Media rules... 😂😂😂😂

Fer gawd's sake. People homeless, others who can't afford heating, but a video of Leo is the government's TOP PRIORITY!!!

No according to the 2fm Changes thread it features all 3 presenters and it is a hidden camera show, last one was more like a bad version of The Generation Game.
