    I always have at least one complaint on podcasts :/

    Not Patreon, but West Cork on Audible is one of the best 'paid' podcasts I've listened to.

    Listened to two on Audible recently. The Rise of the Iron Men by Mischa Glenny, about Dutuerte, Bolsonaro, Trump, Modi, Johnson etc. and Shootout, about the North Hollywood shoot out in 1996.

    Both are excellent. The North Hollywood one is really brilliant, with real life descriptions from those who were there.

    Off Menu with Ed Gamble and James Acaster is my new favourite.

    They invite guests, usually comedians, on to discuss their dream 3 course meal. The conversations and funny tales flow easily and you get great stories from the guest. The Louis Theroux episode is a highlight for me, he’s so funny in it.

    Generally I stay away but there's a few I support that genuinely need the cash to survive. I support second captains as I've always been a fan and the content is generally good. I pay a fiver a month to a few other ones that only require a donation, they're quite niche like fantasy football and xfm ricky gervais fan pod..would I give the likes of an already rich celeb money just jumping on the podcast phenomenon, no. Podcasts should be niche, not for the masses.

    Would Ricky Gervais not count as a rich celeb?

    I know he used to have the hilarious podcast over 10 years ago with Steve Merchant and Karl Pilkington, that was gold. Is the new one as good?

    No, a fan podcast that goes through every xfm show from the early 2000s. Nothing to do with Ricky/Steve/Karl.

    No snippets. The original xfm shows are heavily guarded as are all the podcast series they made.

    Fall of Civilisations is excellent. Really well researched and narrated. It tells the story of a different civilisation in each episode and goes onto their way of life etc and their eventual demise. I had forgotten about it for months but back into it now again and I'm really enjoying it.

    Episodes can be quite lengthy if that is the one I'm thinking of but he does sustain interest.

    Same is true of a lot of History of Rock in 500 Songs though it started as about 1/2 hour episodes then seems to be 2 or 3 hours where teh presenter really sets the scene. Including what appear to be major diversions but turn out to be really educational background.

    Katy Lister's podcast Betwixt The Sheets is normally great fun and very informative but is mainly on somewhat bawdy topics. Her books are pretty good too.

    The Alexei Sayle Show is quite good, have it on at the moment.

    Oh Brother the Hanley Brothers podcast on life in The Fall where they interview ex-members and major fans.

    We're Not So Different where 2 American leftists talk about history , mainly Medieval so far though I think they have got outside of that .

    Media-Eval one where an American Histyorian looks at Media representations of Medieval life and judge how good they are.

    Backlisted where a pair of English publishers talk about lesser known books with a guest panelist. I caught the episode taht was recorded during last year's Galway Arts Festival

    Better Read Than Dead a group of American leftists talk about books a different one per episode. turned me onto some good stuff I hadn't read before Anita Loos and George Schuyler to name 2.

    We Need To Talk About Whiteness British one about decolonising race etc talking to a different guest each week.

    The Red Nation Podcast native American show about decolonisation etc ties in with the Landback campaign

    Opening Arguments a lawyer and a comedian look at current American politics from a legal perspective

    Guilty Feminist funny alternat6ive comedy based feminist podcast covers a lot of great topics.

    Yo! Is This Racist the star of Star Tek Lower Decks and a pair of fellow comedians look at listener voicemails that ask about the grey area of prejudice etc.

    This is now an umbrella group of different podcasts including the Katy Lister one I mention above, Gone Medieval and a few others.

    I think it started with a series by Dan Snow whose father is a very well known reporter with channel 4. I think Dan is well known in his own right too.

    Not sure if it was mentioned before but Tunnel 29 (BBC Intrigue) is great. It’s the true story of an escape to the west via a tunnel dug by a group of students under the Berlin Wall. There’s maybe 8/9 episodes. Excellent podcast.

    Listening to Andy Dawson Athletico Mince, which is great (although you need to listen from the start, because running jokes and references are evolved over time), led me to Top Flight Time Machine, which is just Andy Dawson and Sam Delaney bantering between themselves, and is absolutely the funniest podcast ever. Sam Delaney is sooo funny.
