    Yes

Mods, is it possible to make this a poll only rather than a full thread? Don't want to clog the place up

    Yes

    Of course it is.

Hard left agitators are behind it. They have finally found something to replace the water protests and suck in the uneducated to follow them.

Maybe if they talked to those getting the accomodation they would realise that these people will contribute greatly to Ireland in future years. My doctor is Syrian - he was a refugee 6 years ago.

Then you see the stunts and misinformation they spread - they suggest that the 10,000 in emergency accomodation are all sleeping rough and the stunt of setting up a couple of dozen tents was laughable, except some people thought it was genuine

    what protesting.

    complete lack of context.

Putin is a dictator. Putin should face justice at the Hague. All good Russians should work to depose Putin. Russias war in Ukraine is illegal and morally wrong.

Main speaker last night a member of Irish Republican Socialist Party. Declared his love for multiculturalism and the diverse area of East Wall. Name checked some foreigners that own businesses in the area. Got heckled by the crowd, asked the crowd to disperse but they refused. Couple of far right heads then gave some impromptu speeches which seemed to go down well with the crowd.

Far Left and Far right battling for control of the narrative but the IRSP fella claims he is official spokesman for the residents group.

Opposition to extreme free market capitalism, that's all.

When this 300 goes in. Another 300 will be going in shortly.

The numbers are long past sustainable.

Put them were the Socialists and progressives live.

The backlash is against working class community standing up for itself.

Oh I'd say the employment percentage in that crowd is high alright. 😂

    Yes

If it isn't racist, than what else could it be? Where I am, we regularly have councillors feeling like they need to apologise for the refugees in the area. There's been way too much complaining and it's all hysteria. I find myself at odds having to remind some people close to me, that it's genuinely only a short term issue they are foaming in the mouth over.

I don't think so, from what I heard from organisers that were interviewed. They had a reasonable argument that the new arrangement was foisted on them without consultation.

Surprised to hear Eoin O'Brien of SF on radio this morning and being very unequivocal that locals should not be protesting. He wants to hijack them all instead to join his anti government protest on Saturday. SF should be careful what it wishes for, as substantial immigration doesn't necessarily align with their overall objective.

The lack of consultation is the problem. Every area that is receiving a Direct Provision centre should be properly consulted as there will be justifiable questions from the local community.

Of course, such protests are always highjacked by a racist minority.

As always, Twitter has defended into a shouty cesspit around this issue. According to many, you're a racist if you have objectifiable concerns.

it would be a good social experiment to allow voting if migrants should be housed in your immediate vicinity.

Racists are a minority, but I’m not convinced that any area would vote yes. A simple jog of the memory will remind folks how hard it is to get communities to agree to rehab clinics in their area, or even wind turbines.

it’s easy to point a finger when you don’t have to manage any of the consequences. I lived in East Wall for 6 years, it has some anti social issues to deal with, which begs the question why put migrants into known hot spot areas?

Pity these men weren't housed in Dalkey or Sandymount. This wouldn't happen there.

  • Registered Users Posts: 9,381 ✭✭✭Yurt2

Was this the same female organiser who was in the above video spewing hate at the arrivals? Because she didn't seem very reasonable to me. Maybe she has a radio voice and an abusing foreigners voice.

I've said it in the other thread, and other posters have already fallen prey to it, careful what conga line you attach yourself to. This "local protest" is already nothing of the sort, and has been hijacked by far-right elements. We already have people soft-soaping racsim and extremism.

It's quite something watching people radicalise themselves and give in to extremism in real-time.

No locals have to be allowed have a voice & say about what goes on in their areas, we cant keep up this pc "look at us we're such a fantastic country" open door policy for much longer.

    Hard left agitators? Like who?

    Philip Dwyer? (Ex NP)

    Dee Wall?

And other assorted right wing loopers...

  • Registered Users Posts: 12,973 ✭✭✭✭hotmail.com

You want to ignore the public feeling in many areas in Ireland - they don't want hundreds of refugees dumped on their doorstep.

You just want to focus on some of the nutters organising the thing.

Ireland ain't no different to any other country, people are weary and are often just opposed to refugees being housed near them.

    Yes

I don't think they'd be there if it was a bunch of white guys from Sweden or something that had been displaced somehow. So I guess they don't trust people of different skin colour from lands they're not as familiar with as European countries. I'm not sure if that makes it racist or not.

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,793 ✭✭✭timmyntc

    No

You think they are racist, so you dream up a hypothetical situation to paint them as racist, and then use your hypothetical as proof of their racism 🙄

mental gymnastics in the extreme here folks

  • Registered Users Posts: 9,381 ✭✭✭Yurt2

It was racist by and large because of the racism on display. It was riddled with far right 'activists' and people were abusing the arrivals entering the facility.

He doesn't need a hypothesis, it was all out there on display last night.

    Yes

I didn't prove anything. I just don't think they'd be there shouting get them out at a bunch of white guys. They're more weary of dark skinned folk from more distant lands, maybe understandably so, but I'm not sure if that classifies as racism or not.

Like do you think they'd be protesting if it was housing homeless white Irish men? Doubt it.

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,793 ✭✭✭timmyntc

  • Registered Users Posts: 12,973 ✭✭✭✭hotmail.com

Oh yes they would. Homeless shelters are difficult to set up as locals object to them.

They don't want drug users near their children.

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,793 ✭✭✭timmyntc

    No

Where is your proof for this assertion?

  • Registered Users Posts: 12,973 ✭✭✭✭hotmail.com

Gary Gannon on the radio now is not happy with the protest.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,965 ✭✭✭xhomelezz

    Yes

Like do you think they'd be protesting if it was housing homeless white Irish men? Doubt it.

I would nearly say the same crowd would be shouting same shìt..

  • Registered Users Posts: 9,381 ✭✭✭Yurt2

Did you miss the scaldies in the video at the start of the thread? And that's just a taste of what went on yesterday. If you don't recognise that as racism, I, or no one else can help you. You either want to stick your head in the sand or have unacknowleged racsism issue yourself.

This is very simple, this was a racist protest, with racist rhetoric and chanting on display, riddled with far right racist elements.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,573 ✭✭✭Northernlily

    No

This is wrong and mirrors the blanket statements that I see across social media channels. There are people in that crowd with justifiable concerns. As always there will be hijacking it for their own racist agenda but it is not as many as you think.

My amazing partner is an immigrant to this country and not white and I still see issues with dumping people into an area and she has the same opinion.

Its not as clear cut. Would I be happy if people were bussed into my area without proper consultation. Absolutely not. With consultation and questions answered it would likely be fine.

Think if all the people scattered all over the country, there is no clear plans for integration when current infrastructure under huge strain.

  • Registered Users Posts: 15,720 ✭✭✭✭whisky_galore

People have every right to protest except those people who I disagree with.
