Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Mods, is it possible to make this a poll only rather than a full thread? Don't want to clog the place up

    Yes

    Of course it is.

Hard left agitators are behind it. They have finally found something to replace the water protests and suck in the uneducated to follow them.

Maybe if they talked to those getting the accomodation they would realise that these people will contribute greatly to Ireland in future years. My doctor is Syrian - he was a refugee 6 years ago.

Then you see the stunts and misinformation they spread - they suggest that the 10,000 in emergency accomodation are all sleeping rough and the stunt of setting up a couple of dozen tents was laughable, except some people thought it was genuine

    what protesting.

    complete lack of context.

Putin is a dictator. Putin should face justice at the Hague. All good Russians should work to depose Putin. Russias war in Ukraine is illegal and morally wrong.

Main speaker last night a member of Irish Republican Socialist Party. Declared his love for multiculturalism and the diverse area of East Wall. Name checked some foreigners that own businesses in the area. Got heckled by the crowd, asked the crowd to disperse but they refused. Couple of far right heads then gave some impromptu speeches which seemed to go down well with the crowd.

Far Left and Far right battling for control of the narrative but the IRSP fella claims he is official spokesman for the residents group.

Opposition to extreme free market capitalism, that's all.

When this 300 goes in. Another 300 will be going in shortly.

The numbers are long past sustainable.

Put them were the Socialists and progressives live.

Oh I'd say the employment percentage in that crowd is high alright. 😂

    Yes

If it isn't racist, than what else could it be? Where I am, we regularly have councillors feeling like they need to apologise for the refugees in the area. There's been way too much complaining and it's all hysteria. I find myself at odds having to remind some people close to me, that it's genuinely only a short term issue they are foaming in the mouth over.

I don't think so, from what I heard from organisers that were interviewed. They had a reasonable argument that the new arrangement was foisted on them without consultation.

Surprised to hear Eoin O'Brien of SF on radio this morning and being very unequivocal that locals should not be protesting. He wants to hijack them all instead to join his anti government protest on Saturday. SF should be careful what it wishes for, as substantial immigration doesn't necessarily align with their overall objective.

  • No

The lack of consultation is the problem. Every area that is receiving a Direct Provision centre should be properly consulted as there will be justifiable questions from the local community.

Of course, such protests are always highjacked by a racist minority.

As always, Twitter has defended into a shouty cesspit around this issue. According to many, you're a racist if you have objectifiable concerns.

it would be a good social experiment to allow voting if migrants should be housed in your immediate vicinity.

Racists are a minority, but I’m not convinced that any area would vote yes. A simple jog of the memory will remind folks how hard it is to get communities to agree to rehab clinics in their area, or even wind turbines.

it’s easy to point a finger when you don’t have to manage any of the consequences. I lived in East Wall for 6 years, it has some anti social issues to deal with, which begs the question why put migrants into known hot spot areas?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,584 ✭✭✭✭hotmail.com

Pity these men weren't housed in Dalkey or Sandymount. This wouldn't happen there.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,381 ✭✭✭Yurt2

Was this the same female organiser who was in the above video spewing hate at the arrivals? Because she didn't seem very reasonable to me. Maybe she has a radio voice and an abusing foreigners voice.

I've said it in the other thread, and other posters have already fallen prey to it, careful what conga line you attach yourself to. This "local protest" is already nothing of the sort, and has been hijacked by far-right elements. We already have people soft-soaping racsim and extremism.

It's quite something watching people radicalise themselves and give in to extremism in real-time.

No locals have to be allowed have a voice & say about what goes on in their areas, we cant keep up this pc "look at us we're such a fantastic country" open door policy for much longer.

    Hard left agitators? Like who?

    Philip Dwyer? (Ex NP)

    Dee Wall?

And other assorted right wing loopers...

You want to ignore the public feeling in many areas in Ireland - they don't want hundreds of refugees dumped on their doorstep.

You just want to focus on some of the nutters organising the thing.

Ireland ain't no different to any other country, people are weary and are often just opposed to refugees being housed near them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,477 ✭✭✭✭Thelonious Monk

    Yes

I don't think they'd be there if it was a bunch of white guys from Sweden or something that had been displaced somehow. So I guess they don't trust people of different skin colour from lands they're not as familiar with as European countries. I'm not sure if that makes it racist or not.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,113 ✭✭✭timmyntc

    No

You think they are racist, so you dream up a hypothetical situation to paint them as racist, and then use your hypothetical as proof of their racism 🙄

mental gymnastics in the extreme here folks

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,381 ✭✭✭Yurt2

It was racist by and large because of the racism on display. It was riddled with far right 'activists' and people were abusing the arrivals entering the facility.

He doesn't need a hypothesis, it was all out there on display last night.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,477 ✭✭✭✭Thelonious Monk

    Yes

I didn't prove anything. I just don't think they'd be there shouting get them out at a bunch of white guys. They're more weary of dark skinned folk from more distant lands, maybe understandably so, but I'm not sure if that classifies as racism or not.

Like do you think they'd be protesting if it was housing homeless white Irish men? Doubt it.

Oh yes they would. Homeless shelters are difficult to set up as locals object to them.

They don't want drug users near their children.

Where is your proof for this assertion?

Like do you think they'd be protesting if it was housing homeless white Irish men? Doubt it.

I would nearly say the same crowd would be shouting same shìt..

Did you miss the scaldies in the video at the start of the thread? And that's just a taste of what went on yesterday. If you don't recognise that as racism, I, or no one else can help you. You either want to stick your head in the sand or have unacknowleged racsism issue yourself.

This is very simple, this was a racist protest, with racist rhetoric and chanting on display, riddled with far right racist elements.

  • No

This is wrong and mirrors the blanket statements that I see across social media channels. There are people in that crowd with justifiable concerns. As always there will be hijacking it for their own racist agenda but it is not as many as you think.

My amazing partner is an immigrant to this country and not white and I still see issues with dumping people into an area and she has the same opinion.

Its not as clear cut. Would I be happy if people were bussed into my area without proper consultation. Absolutely not. With consultation and questions answered it would likely be fine.

Think if all the people scattered all over the country, there is no clear plans for integration when current infrastructure under huge strain.

    And you're complaining about racism.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,040 ✭✭✭gw80

But do you think it is OK for hundreds of refugees to be just dumped into these areas?

Do you realise that the flow of people will never stop, never, do you not see how all this will add to the housing crisis, the health care crisis and every other crisis we are having,

We have effectively no control of our boarders and there are billons of people looking for an easier life out there, this will not be of benefit to us,

Controls need to be put in place, and soon,

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,506 ✭✭✭✭retalivity

Are all people at the protest racist? No.

Are there racists at the protest trying to bend it to their ends? Yes.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,477 ✭✭✭✭Thelonious Monk

    Yes

If they have to go somewhere, I don't think this is the worst place to put them. It's basically the city centre and it's not like they're being dumped in the middle of some small town where they'd be a huge presence. I may be in a minority, but it wouldn't bother me in the slightest.

You didnt state it was an opinion, you stated it as (implied) fact. It is not factual, and you have no evidence.

You reckon that they would be more wary of black people than white people - there is no evidence to back this up other than your own reckoning. An opinion with nothing to back it, yes.

Hundreds of unvetted men coming into an area without consultation or question. Dead right to get out and question what’s going on.

it’s the management of the situation that’s got people rilled up. We have stacks of evidence from other countries that have implemented this policy and we want to make the same mistakes they all have?

well I went to school in that area and have spent a lot of time in the north inner city. I have heard vitriol against foreign people from that community more than anywhere else. Banging on about them getting free this and that. They feel left out or that they're not getting as much stuff for free as them.

Travellers and people from rough areas from Dublin are where I've heard the worst racism in Ireland. I'll die on that hill.

Sad to see this sort of racism in Ireland. These racists will go on and on about how we should prioritise our own and then go back to spouting the usual hatred of travellers, women, LGBT people, the homeless, etc... Transparent and pathetically so.

There probaby were hateful racists at the protests.

But does that make it ok to quickly convert an office block into accommodation for young male economic migrants from Somali Nigeria and Afghanistan? Without any local consultation.

You cannot flee directly from those countries, or from their neighbouring countries to Ireland.

Is this journalist from the Examiner a racist? Taoiseach: Local communities must be consulted before refugees arrive (irishexaminer.com)

I'm moving from the UK to North Strand early next year, just around the corner from here. Do I need to get vetted by the way? People keep saying this. Will I be lynched if I don't show proof of vetination?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,205 ✭✭✭jiltloop

    Yes

I voted yes although I don't think it necessarily has to be racist.

What I am seeing on the clips looks pretty racist though and I think it's disgusting and disgraceful. I.e people shouting abuse at immigrants and shouting "go back to your own country". How can that not be racist?

    Shameful scenes.

This is it. There's a conversation to be had about immigration generally, but there's no point in having it with racist scaldies shouting abuse at foreigners or far-right melts. Those type of people are just baying for blood and want to enact their psychological problems on people, not find solutions or come to some sort of accomodation on what type of immigration policy we should have.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,381 ✭✭✭Yurt2

The first job the East Wall community has is to eject the far-right extremists from the situation.

There's one absolute melt extremist from Sandymount that was there last night on a megaphone claiming to be from an "inner city community called Sandymount". Have you ever heard such sh*t?

So yeah, there's a job of work to be done, becuase a fair whack of attendees last night and at the weekend have nothing to do with East Wall and just want to stir sh*t and generate racial emnity (and they've been successful thus far).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,205 ✭✭✭jiltloop

    Yes

Absolutely, there are some valid concerns and questions about the refugee process in this country. It's completely flawed and open to abuse. There are correct ways to communicate those concerns and ask those questions but the disgusting behaviour of those people in the videos and clips available online are not the right way and it's completely racist.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,124 ✭✭✭✭Danzy

    No

There is a lot of snobbery from the activist types.

This year alone we have taken more than would be housed in 3 years if they took all the new builds, nevermind the shortage from years past, never mind the acceleration in numbers.

A country with an incredible shortage of accomodation is now implementing the most extreme free market approach to migration imaginable.

Even Eoin o'Broin knows that the shortfall will not be made up, nor that even half is achievable.

Scaldy is not a racist term and you know it. Try that on with someone else, you'll get no joy from me.

And yes, the people in that video are scaldies.
