Without printed or digital media to back it up, it always comes down to s/he said. Common sense needs to prevail in those cases, but the definition of common sense is not as clear anymore. Not specifically regarding this, but everything in general. Seems common sense isn't common anymore. And common is debatable. I would have thought it common sense not to drink battery acid. Car manufacturers still have to warn you.

True reminds me of the old days a hole not where you would not normal go has 1 sign saying hole. Now unless it have 15 kinds of warnings and 15 meter fences you can sue. In winter steps may have ice on them. When it rains don't drive to fast.

My favourite of the last couple of years is being able to sue your employer for falling down your own stairs while WFH. Good ole Germany. I digress.

But it is related. Who gets to decide the line between common or not? Who decides what constitutes hate speech, or intent. Most people will be grand because they don't actually speak their minds, and it'll be do good, I think, to hopefully stem the tide of online idiots who think they deserve to have their opinion heard. It shouldn't affect those with opposing views who have factual backup, or frame it as complete opinion and not try and convince others to believe the same, but that also depends on the reach of the audience and is more grey areas...

I'll become more unsocial. It's not like this doesn't have precedence, there's a certain word we can't even type in context, seems more are being added and I don't necessarily think that's a good thing. Misuse of them I'm wholeheartedly against, but complete censorship is never a good thing. Things are never straight forward. Further interesting times ahead.

True again Those pushing this never see it will affect them. Sorry but that just stupid thinking just takes the wrong kind of Government to get in. In this case your Enemy should be your Friend. The laws at the moment seem fine Adding another protected group no issue. But who is the gatekeeper. That's my huge issue with this stuff. Remember when they wanted to give you a card to watch porn. List would never be found ofc.... Slowly slowly everyone rights get eroded.

Sure you'll have to ask her, she was the one who admitted to drinking all evening until 2am.

Then she proceeded to abuse a bunch people, refused to leave a premises, had to be escorted out and then she was arrested.

If you are telling me she was clean sober doing all that, than she is an even bigger cretin than I thought.

    dont need detail

    You're all over the place

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

Who is the gatekeeper of laws in Ireland, is that really what you are asking?

Eh the courts, same as it ever was.

Men should not be in single sex female spaces. You don’t need to be drunk to point that out.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,177 ✭✭✭Fandymo

The irony hahaha. “Do you really put other humans into groups like you have in this post” while discussing humans being put into groups to create a hierarchy of victimhood. Cognitive dissonance overload!!

Very true. Countries like Saudi Arabia are full of single sex spaces, and they manage to violently enforce them without a drop of alcohol.

What groups have I put humans into there Fandy?

Or................... Ireland has scored highly in allowing free speech

Based on that interpretation I checked the scores of Russia and Belarus, they have the lowest possible scores in that category so they must allow lots of free speech?

    Right?

    Amirite?

Do you think Ireland compares to Russia in it's treatment of Gays and Lesbians and so called transpeople? Yes or No.

Where did I say you’d put humans into groups?? Hint: I didn’t. Try reading it again…

“discussing humans being put into groups”.

    You posted

The irony hahaha. “Do you really put other humans into groups like you have in this post”

the only way that question could be construed as irony is if I were putting humans into groups.

    Now you reply:

Where did I say you’d put humans into groups?? Hint: I didn’t. …

Add in an uncivil comment from you

    Try reading it again…

The question, then is: should we have complete free speech (including for people like fascists and pedophiles) or do we put limits on it (thus, rendering it not completely free)?

Everything I don't like is either woke or fascist - possibly both - pick one.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 41,232 ✭✭✭✭Annasopra

There has never been absolute free speech and never will be. If I distributed posters calling for the murder of Ukrainians I would probably be charged with incitement to hatred and rightfully so.

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? Shouldn't everyone be allowed to racially abuse who they want when they want?

I mean protecting freedom of speech should trump protecting people from hatred right?

Words never hurt anyone, right. I mean no one is getting upset about the meaning of words.

Like take the words male and female I can just use those words to mean whatever I want right, there is no issue with me using my freedom of speech to redefine those words as I choose right?

    🤣

    • Non-binary recognition

I think we can safely say that Ireland is never ever ever going to get a 100% mark.

Most countries don't pass any of these related to Intersex

    • Intersex bodily integrity Prohibition of medical intervention before child is able to informed consent (intersex)
    • Universality of prohibition of medical interventions
    • Existence of effective monitoring mechanism
    • Access to justice for victims and reparations

And anyway does it make sense to lump random issues together to give an overall score?

    NO!

oh and btw, I don't think the UK's one has been properly vetted because they actually have banned gay conversion therapy.

They keep saying they will but it hasnt been codified into law yet.

The ILGA report covers the calendar year 2021.

Here is the latest significant news about the conversion therapy ban, and how close they came to scrapping it, from April 2022

My point entirely: when people are ahouting 'free speech' - are they sure this is what they want?

Everything I don't like is either woke or fascist - possibly both - pick one.

If they want absolute free speech get ready for IMBLA showing up at school recess for marketing.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,466 ✭✭✭RobbieTheRobber

I thought that was what you were getting at but I wanted to shitpost to mock the absurdity of the freedom of speech crowd at times on the back of your post.

The part in quotation marks, is me quoting you, pointing out the irony in your quote while you are posting in a thread where people were being put into groups to create a hierarchy of victims.

It is really not that difficult a concept. You were faux-outraged that someone else may group sets of people together (JohnDoe1) whilst simultaneously cheerleading for Hate Crime legislation that (shock horror) groups sets of people together. That is the definition of irony (a state of affairs or an event that seems deliberately contrary to what one expect).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 86,683 ✭✭✭✭Overheal

Hate Crime legislation that (shock horror) groups sets of people together.

Expand on that please, how does the legislation do that?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,956 ✭✭✭✭EmmetSpiceland

Well, I guess it groups racists, misogynists, transphobes, bigots, homophobes, neo-nazis, xenophobes and other hate-driven folks together. As they will be the ones, mostly, effected by this law.

Well more aptly it's the one group of people who 'shall be guilty of' the statute.
