Bailey is something special. Jakobi is too.

I think we've just seen Mac lose his job. Wow.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 38,930 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

In fairness Mac is a lot better than what he's been showing this year but you just can't deny Bailey with what he's done so far.

And the fact he broke the college yardage and touchdown season records just makes you believe he's the man.

He's showing off now as I type with that throw to Parker, just wow.

And now we are in front, Bailey 4 of 4 for 97 yards.

I'm now fully aboard the Bailey train after what he's done in this game. He's just lifted the whole team on both sides of the ball.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 38,930 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

Trent Brown has been a big problem giving away penalties and stalling drives tonight.

Bailey's punting has been awful too.

Looks like we are going to lose this one, down by nine and the Bears starting in good field position after another terrible punt.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 38,930 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

That's that, conceding 32 points to the Bears is just awful and I'm putting most of it on Bailey and the offense with lots of three and outs and bad punts. Defense has been on the field most of the second half.

    Just an awful night. ☹️

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,426 ✭✭✭Shedite27

How do you shut out the top scoring team then concede 31 to the lowest scoring team two weeks apart

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 38,930 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

As I said the offense and punting were responsible. Our defense spent 38 minutes on the field last night. We gave up ten points right at the end of the second quarter where our defense were off their feet. Trent Brown's penalties cost us, poor throws cost us.

I don't think any of Bailey's punts went more than 40 yards and they weren't very high either as the receiver had loads of room to run after catching them.

In fairness Fields was very good last night and my current pick for DPOY, Roquain Smith, was pretty incredible.

  • Registered Users Posts: 460 ✭✭Tom1991

I think the D needs a hard look at itself to be honest they were in position enough times to get the bears off the field last night. We are so slow there and miss barmore massively in the pass rush to try hide that slowness in the middle.Mccourty gone off a cliff also. Also the bears not getting Offensive holding called against them really was a joke at times too seeing as they were beaten up with injuries there and headlocking guys on alot of plays.Beaten by the better team regardless still.

Offense wise we go from two well called games to a shitshow with mac to get us in a rut and the run game died a death early.Zappe also not great either after the fumble on the third drive he had.

It will be like this all year i reckon and 9-8 is where our ceiling is i reckon.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,212 ✭✭✭✭ELM327

That was a game that mac jones and the defense both lost. Zappe played exceedingly well most plays but had a couple of rookie mistakes. He has a high ceiling and given we're not likely a playoff team this year I'd give him the rest of the year.

The D was on the field far too long and D's get tired if they don't get a break. All those three and outs mean they get no rest between drives so it's understandable what happened to them.

They were on the field for eight plays, we went three and out and they then conceded the first touchdown on a nine play drive.

The second touchdown we conceded was after a bunch of short drives where they were on the field quickly three times.

Second half started with a ten play Bears drive leading to a field goal, then a Patriots three and out followed by another ten play drive for a field goal then another three and out and then the Bears eight play td drive to put them up 33-14.

As you can see from that they got no rest.

Offensive line were the main issue giving up penalties, not pass protecting to a high enough level and being pretty poor on run blocking too. Bailey's punting was a huge issue too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,323 ✭✭✭el Fenomeno

Mac made one of the worst throws Ive seen a NE quarterback make in a long time, but a pick six was wiped out by a penalty.

We than have the ball at the 12 yard line with 25 seconds left and 3 timeouts.

    Run - penalty

    Run

    Run

    Kneel Down

That's zero confidence shown in him - maybe rightfully so - and I'll be surprised to see him in the second half.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 38,930 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

Despite everything that's fine on we are 4-4 and lying eighth in the conference just one game out if making the playoffs.

We have to face the Bills twice, we have the Vikings as well. Outside of that all other games are very winnable.

I'd be hoping we end up with a winning season.

  • Registered Users Posts: 666 ✭✭✭Speckydodge

That pack six throw was apparently Myers fault from a few tape heads I've seen since.

Thought Mac was much better second half, he's clearly rusty and confidence looks to be rock bottom, they just need to build him back up bit by bit and play to his strengths again.

Stevenson is such a monster , what a player.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 38,930 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

Yes I seen those reviews myself and gotta agree with them.

Mac's confidence isn't very high I'm sure. I honestly think Parker's injury is a good thing for him right now. Nearly all his picks before the injury were balls thrown to DeVante and they were aggressive throws into double coverage most often.

I'd hope somebody explained the booing to him as in that they weren't booing Mac, they were booing anybody that wasn't Bailey.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,212 ✭✭✭✭ELM327

It's almost a pity we're still in contention IMO. For me if we were 2-6 now, Zappe may be given a few games

  • Registered Users Posts: 49 Coreyhotline

I kind of held off commenting after the Bears game because I wanted to see how Mac would go in the next few weeks. However, one interesting post-script from that Bears game is Scott Pioli was saying that the tape had caught up with Zappe, with d-linemen easing off and putting their hands up when Bailey was going to throw (because he's shorter than most). To be honest, I didn't see it but I only saw highlights so may well have been the case. Of course, as we well know from the Texans "leatherman" game, we can solve that problem so I'm surprised the O-line didn't adjust. Indeed, perhaps that's more a reflection on the state of the O-line than anything.

The D were just physically beat up in Chicago more than anything else, which I'm fine with as you can fix that, and have shown again that they are capable of dominating games. I do think we have an issue with running qbs, even going back to when tyrod taylor was qb in buffalo. Looking at it, there doesn't seem to have been as much emphasis on keeping the contain, several of Fields runs were through gaps where Judon was trying to get around the outside. I wonder if this is because we can't play a 3-4 as the base defence because we don't really have a 2-gapper. I thought it was interesting in Uche's comments after this week's game, he talked about making sure he never got past level with the QB, so this might be something that is being addressed.

We are what we are at this stage, which is a great defence and decent special teams saddled with an offence that will not win a track meet type game, and that will struggle against good defences. The real test will be when we meet the Bills or Miami again, as that will demonstrate whether we can keep those offences to the kind of scores we can count on from offence (low 20s).

On a side note, I know BB probably doesn't like in-season trades in, but when I was looking at the Bears game in particular, the one area I thought we could improve the defence significantly was at the MLB. I thought Roquan Smith would have been perfect, so would have looked like a freakin oracle if I'd posted it when I first thought of it!

Be interesting to see what Mac looks like after the bye, I think a reset is needed during this bye to get him back on track. He's really been nursed through these last few games since Chicago, same number of attempts but much shorter distances and less aggressive throws, presumably to build him back up. Even then, he's still made some horrific throws that would make you wonder if his head is just gone. All the feedback from training camp was that he'd stepped up a level, so hopefully they can get him back towards that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 38,930 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

Well the big issue is the offensive line at the minute. Between penalties from both tackles and breakdowns in pass protection they've been very poor. It's not fair to judge Mac when the line is putting him in long yardage situations a lot and not protecting him a lot too.

  • Registered Users Posts: 49 Coreyhotline

Hopefully we take care of the Vikings tonight, would make our game with Buffalo next week really interesting. Anyway, on a slightly tenuous Patriots note, saw Scott Pioli was on Her Huddle this week. I always liked Pioli, and he's a great analyst/talking head, always interesting and insightful. Anyway, as if that wasn't enough, he gained extra respect today from me for rocking a pair of Doc Martens 😀Just not what you see from your average NFL exec.

Great opening drive, Mac looked real good there.

Mac 28 of 39, 382 yards 2 TDs and no picks. He got good protection most of the night and looked great.

It's a crushing loss, a running into the kicker penalty cost us the game.

The offensive line has to get credit for their performance. If they keep that up we still have a great chance of making the playoffs.

Mac showed his quality tonight. He was getting the ball out quick she accurately. He just needs a little time and he's great.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,064 ✭✭✭Christy42

The tie breaker over the Jets is massive.

Wild card spots are narrowing down to Dolphins, Bengals, Jets, Pats and Chargers (or replace Dolphins Bengals with Bills Ravens if those division leads change).

There are good odds 3 of those teams being 6-5 when this weekend is over.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,212 ✭✭✭✭ELM327

Didnt stay up for the game last night, just finished the watch through there. Pleasantly surprised by our offense, Mac had a great game and as others rightly said the roughing the kicker and BS non catch call cost us the game. The passing game was like a different playbook compared to earlier in the year. Hopefully - like the broadcast commentary said - Jones is being coached up

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 38,930 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

That no catch call confused me. Even if you deemed he was fumbling with it in the end zone it still seemed like a catch to me and should have been given as a catch at the 1 yard line.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 38,930 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

Bill Belichick's dream player, Marcus Jones a cornerback who is great on ST's and takes a reception from Mac Jones at the 50 and goes all the way.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,323 ✭✭✭el Fenomeno

1:05 left in the half, you turn the ball over at midfield, you have a timeout and you know Buffalo gets the ball to start the half.

So you run the ball twice, run the clock down to 29 seconds and play for the long FG attempt that ends up missing.

Such cowardly coaching. The boos are deserved.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 38,930 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

The problem was, and has been almost all year, that the offensive line is horrendous.

Mac Jones gets a lot of stick but you need more than 1.5 seconds to get yourself set to throw good balls consistently.

Also a field goal at that stage would have made it a seven point game.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,212 ✭✭✭✭ELM327

I had no issue with the FG attempt, but the clock management and field position management was the problem. With 65 seconds and a timeout there was still a chance to push further downfield to shorten the FG attempt and leave less time on the clock before the half.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 38,930 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

A clear out is needed. New offensive coaches including a line coach. New players as well, we need to use our first and second round picks on tackles. We are in big trouble on both sides of the line.

Trent Brown isn't that old but looks finished to me, Isaiah Wynn never got started.

Somehow last week against the Vikings the OL did their job for a lot of the game and we seen what Mac Jones is capable of. If we get that line sorted we'll win a lot if games. We don't even have a truly elite receiver.

When you look around the league there's very few teams whose receiving corp is as bad as ours. The Giants, Jags, Texans, Ravens, Chiefs, Panthers and Falcons might be close to our level of talent at receiver. That means there's 24 teams in better shape than us.

Some good points there, and I agree with pretty much all of them. What do most of those teams have in common? They are run first teams. We have something special in Stevenson IMO, and with a good line we should maximise that. I don't think Jones is the second coming of brady but he's certainly a kirk cousins level player. Good enough in the right scenario. If you imagine a world where Nkeal Harry was Jamarr Chase, we'd have a great team. Run rhamondre and then play action downfield to the notional chase/harry.

We don't even need an elite receiver though. A good line, two good tight ends that can block and stretch the middle of the field - helping in the play action game, and a couple of solid WRs we should be good enough to compete. I think as it stands right now we're OK with Jones (I'd like to see Zappe get some time too, see if he is any better), we're good at RB, one more WR, a couple of OL, maybe one addition somewhere on defense. I'm happy with Judon this year, leading the NFL in sacks is no small feat this late in the seasons.

Coaching however is the big one for me. We havent replaced mcdaniels well. Not saying mcdaniels was god tier or anything but at least he had some offensive mindset. Patricia /Matty P coaching offense is like asking Brady to play tight end. Even if you're a brilliant QB, best to ever do it, you're not gonna be necessarily good at tight end. Patricia was ok on defense but he's not an OC. Clearly.

I see Orlando Brown is a free agent next year. I doubt the Chiefs are in a position to tag him with over 100 million of cap hits between Mahomes, Jones and Clark. Then you've got Kelce and Thuney who must be on big cap numbers as well. I'd imagine that's at least another 40 million. That leaves about 80 max for everybody else

We should be in for him. Maybe Brown would be capable of doing a job at RT.

  • Registered Users Posts: 49 Coreyhotline

Hard to know what to make of last night (which seems to be what I say every time this season). We really caught a break with Murray going down, because the mood music after 3 plays was already looking ominous. On the plus side, I thought it was good to see Bourne back on the field, for a guy who supposedly has a blocking issue he put in some really solid blocks to spring big plays for the rookies. Also good to see Judon getting some pressure on, was beginning to worry this would be a repeat of last year where he's Tarzan for the first half of the season and Jane for the second half. Can't really look at any game with confidence going forward, or indeed any game with outright pessimism either. If we make the playoffs, I feel it will be because the Fins or Jets make a muck of it rather than anything we do, we could even have a losing season. Alternatively, we might get lucky if the Bills have clinched the division by week 18 and we're playing back-ups. It's just really hard to hang your hat on anything with this team this season.

In the off-season, we have about 20 issues that could do with fixing, but the biggest by far are the O-line (bring Dante back no matter what the cost, there must be a number that could tempt him 😀) and the OC (Patricia and Judge have had their chance, if it was a mix of good offensive play punctuated by learning on the job mistakes, I'd be OK to give them another year, but there's not a lot of good offensive play).

The corner group is good but a true number 1 corner could really elevate them, and I still think I'd like a playmaking middle linebacker ala Roquan Smith. I'd be happy to go with the receiver group as is aside from Aglohor for next year so we can see what they look like with good playcalling. I think Aglohor has to go, his ball security is terrible, everytime he catches the ball is nearly a fumble waiting to happen and he was really lucky to get away with one last night. RB group is good, be interesting to see if D. Harris stays on or moves, but initial looks for K. Harris and Strong were good.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 38,930 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

I think we are in decent shape at LB and I firmly believe that at corner Jack Jones is going to be a superstar.

Those two positions are well down the order of needs in my opinion although we are a little light on depth at cornerback.

There's a lot of talent at cornerback in the 2023 draft, you could easily pick up a really good one in the later rounds.

I really believe we need to spend big on a tackle. Whether that's finding a top free agent or taking two in the early rounds of the draft to try make sure we have a good starter I really don't care. I'd be happy with Trent Brown at RT but he's not good enough for the blind side, I don't like all the penalties he's giving away but I'm pretty sure that's because he's very worried about getting beat at the snap. We don't just need a starter we need depth as well. Wynn is out of contract and good riddins, Cajuste might make a decent guard but he's not a tackle.

After tackle our next biggest need for me is wide receiver. I believe Thornton will work out as the X and Meyers at flanker but we badly need a good slot guy. We don't want to waste Meyers there when he's such a good Z.

Outside of OL and a slot receiver I'm not too worried about any position. Well we need a new punter.

You have players chirping at coaches, A coaching team that is a brain trust for abject failure you end up with **** like that on your face.

None of our play this year has been typical of a patriots team.Penalties left and right.Game management a disaster. Special teams apart from the jets game been costing touch downs.

The next three games will be nails in the coffin and we need to make the tough calls in the offseason.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,049 ✭✭✭dmakc

Don't let the pass distract everyone from the business decision by Mac Jones. Pathetic

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,064 ✭✭✭Christy42

Mac Jones played badly but I am not going to blame him for not managing to tackle Chandler Jones. That is a massive massive mismatch.

He seemed to make a bad attempt at a tackle but really that is not a situation many qbs in the league stand a chance in.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 38,930 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

Mac Jones needs a line to protect him and a decent slot receiver. Until he gets that you can't really gauge how good/bad he is.

I hate what happened at the end, I think it was Jakobi who threw that ball.

None of it should have mattered as the decision to let the Raiders touchdown stand was a complete con-job. You often hear about being able to piece things together from different angles. I called him out of bounds on the live shot as the play happened. It was easy to piece that together but they decided it was a touchdown which is nothing short of a con-job.

If that was a Patriots TD it wouldn't have stood.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,426 ✭✭✭Shedite27

Everyone takes some blame for that last night

Meyers - should have known the situation and that the lateral wasn't needed.

Stevenson - shouldn't have lateralled the ball.

Mac - should have made sure all his players knew the situation, either he didn't tell them or they didn't listen to him.

I know we've been blessed with huge personalities on the team for 20 years, but can't help feeling that the offence in particular is lacking some leadership this year, plain and simple that **** isn't the Patriot Way. That's Browns football

I am in shock at the awful call. But bad calls happen, and that's football. What shouldnt happen, is bad game management by a patriots team with BB at the helm.

I jokingly put on twitter that someone will get cut on monday for that. Obviously we arent going to cut meyers but its a huge lack of football IQ. We need a competent OC, better OL, and some weapons on offense. We got lucky with Stevenson, he's really shone. That Jones (number 25) is a diamond in the rough too. Perfect BB/NE player.

This Matty P experiment has to end. I'm flip flopping on Mac at QB too. Looking at my past posts here I'm both praising him and the next week wanting Zappe in the game.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 38,930 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

Well as regards Mac I'm still on the fence a bit but on his side of it. He got good protection somehow for two and a bit quarters against the Vikings and threw for almost 400 yards.

I want him to get time in the pocket and a good slot receiver and we'll know then how good he is. So a left tackle and move Trent to the right and one more decent guard and we'll know very quickly what we've got in Mac. And if it doesn't work out them we can give Bailey a go and see what he's got.

We need an offensive co-ordinator, that may be more important than a tackle. Any chance I wonder if we can lull Scar out of retirement to work with the OL just even for training camp next year?

  • Registered Users Posts: 49 Coreyhotline

Getting Scar back would be the dream, but long term it would just be sticky-plaster. Having taken a few days to get my head together, a few things jump out at me:

    (a) Why did we run a play at all? With 3 seconds on the clock, we should have taken the knee. With all the Raiders back deep to defend a Hail Mary, there was no way a draw play was going anyplace once Stevenson got to the second level. That falls on Matt P. and really smacks of trying to do too much.

    (b) It's a pity our 2 most consistent players this season were the source of the issue. We know situational football is preached all the time, so to me this indicates that there's a level of anxiety or panic in the dressing room, that solid players who should know better are feeling the pressure to make things happen.

    (c) The punt botchjob. It's hard to know if Peppers didn't know the play or if punter Palardy called the snap too early while they were setting assignments, but either way, as someone said earlier, that was Cleveland Browns football.

    (d) I was really disappointed to hear of Trent Brown liking a Twitter post that suggested the Pats should try and get Jimmy G or TB12 back in town. Talk about a way to stab your QB in the back. Very un-Patriots like, especially considering Brown is one of the more senior players on the offensive roster. I particularly dislike it as there's a high chance Brown would be on civvy street right now if the Pats hadn't resurrected his career twice, so he should be bought in even more than the rest of the roster. Be interesting to see if he gets benched for a series this week, I think that would be very telling in terms of where this team is culturally.

    (e) I think it was in the Pats mailbag that someone made the point that the coaching structure in New England has been decimated in the last few years with Flores, McDaniel, Judge and Patricia all taking staff to their head coaching gigs, along with the retirement of Scar and Ernie Adams. In addition, there just isn't the same depth of leadership core as previously. Realistically, there are only 3-4 real leaders on the team right now who are schooled in the Patriots way, Dev, Slates, Wise and Andrews. All this adds up to the point that I feel things have shifted culturally for us, and I just don't think the current culture has the same edge it once had. The Brown incident above, along with Mac's constant chirping this season on-field, is the kind of stuff that would not have been tolerated in the past no matter who you were unless you were the GOAT, BB benching Welker for the first series of an AFC championship game being an example.

    (f) The most concerning thing I saw on Sunday though was Mac Jones. He was given a pretty clean pocket for most of the night, and while he didn't make any egregiously stupid decisions, his accuracy was way off. Passes in the wrong position for receivers, passes a bit too far past, etc. I can accept bad reads in the second year, but when his accuracy starts to waver, that really concerns me. I'm not sure if that's a Mac thing or an in-season coaching thing, but it's hard not to think that this season and set-up has been really damaging to Mac. Doesn't take a rocket scientist to say that this off-season is a make-or-break one for Mac. Be interesting to see how Bill will address this in the offseason. I know the rumour is Bill O'Brien, but I'm not sure he's the guy to mould Mac e.g. my feeling is he'd be better if we'd an established offensive scheme. If he did come in, I'd really like to see them get someone from outside the organisation to come in as the QB coach. The other thing is if Bill O'Brien does come back, my assumption is that he'll only be doing that if he gets some guarantees in terms of the New England head coaching gig. I'm not sure how I feel about that. He did OK in Houston until the wheels came off, and as we know from BB's coaching arc you don't always get it right in your first gig. Nonetheless, I'm not sure that he's bringing something to the table that wiill change things in the long run. I think the league has finally caught up with us in terms of roster and salary cap management which was always a big tactical advantage we had, plus the Brady hometown discount is a phenomenon that is unlikely to occur again (I know Mac is on a rookie contract but going forward he'll either renew to proper pay, or we'll have to pay someone free agent dollar). What do you guys think about a BOB-lead Patriots organisation.

    (g) The Raiders touchdown. Leaving aside what appears to be the egregious miscall in New York in not overturning the call on the field, I don't understand why the NFL don't have rules around cleats and their colour at the bottom. It looked to me like there's a bit of white on the receiver's shoe at the bottom which makes it more difficult to assess. PFT have also been banging the drum about why the owners won't shell out for pylon cams, making the point that they would have been there if the game had been carried on CBS as originally scheduled. Final thing is that I've noticed in a few stadiums that they don't paint the end zone right up to the goal line, So-Fi in particular is one I've noticed it over and over where they have about a half foot of green past the goal line. I'm fairly certain this is a deliberate thing, maybe to discourage players reaching out over the goal line by tricking them with the extra green to make them think they've further to go. This is something the league should really clamp down on.

I know I said last week I felt we'd go to the play-offs only if the Fins and Jets shat the bed, which is exactly what they've been doing. However, now I feel even in that case, we can't get out of our own way to take advantage. Difficult to make a case for us even going 1-2 over the final games, although you'd imagine BB will have the whip out this week. I'd like to say that on the plus side, we might finally get to pick in a decent position in the draft, but even then can we trust BB to use it on a game-changing talent that could elevate those around him. Last year's draft delivered solid players, several of who might have a bright future, but I wouldn't define any of them as game changers yet. Again, I feel there's too much flux in the offense for it to be on that side, fix the scheme and execution first so that we can find out what we've got. Defensively, I feel if we could get an elite player ala a Donald, early JJ Watt, Micah Parsons, Revis type, that could push the defence from good enough to keep us in games to good enough to win us games in spite of the offence. You can get those kind of talents in the top 15 range on defence, so hopefully that's what we do.

As regards O'Brien, he's a great man to get players in shape and ready for action. The issue with him is in-game decisions, he just makes so many mistakes.

Didn't get to see the 2nd half but seems like another sickening defeat

It wasn't anything like last week. The fumble was a really good defensive play. It was sickening after watching such a great comeback.

A lot to like in that game. Went toe to toe and was really only the two stupid kick-off returns between the teams. Missed opportunity and would have loved to go into Cincinnati next weekend after such a solid showing tonight.

But a losing season when it comes down to it, albeit the damage was done by stupidity against the Raiders and Bears rather than tonight.

Fire Patrica and Judge into the sun please. Team needs fresh blood for GM and coaching hires. Can't imagine Kraft tolerating this level of performance for another season.

It was a good performance but very un pats like, allowing 2 TD on special teams is ridiculous

I'd love if we had an awful 2023 and ended up with the first pick, take Caleb Williams and it'd be fun for the next ten to fifteen years. Whoever gets Williams is going to instantly have a fantastic offense.
