Tesla Model Y. The base model, it dropped in price by €12k overnight last Friday. Bought it within 5 minutes of being made aware of this.

Yes great deal with Y if i was changing main car would have ordered one, need a second car have a MG 4 SR on order in September and Quoted 29000 for white.

i do agree the grant is not passed onto the customer and when its reduced in July will not affect prices as i thing ID3 and Magane are over priced, also more competition in 2023 from BYD, Ora Cat and hopefully Nio.

Because the one you order now will be made in Germany, until now they were made in China. That means no 10% (about €6k) import duty bringing it into the EU, much cheaper to transport it here and then it went under the grant limit, so you get the €5k grant. That explains the €12k

Over production in china so Tesla discounted and dropped below 60000 so also got the grant, good video about it from electric Viking.

Eh no. See my explanation, the only reason for the price coming down is that the cars will be produced within the EU, so less tax.

I follow Sam Evans, he has merits, works very hard. But he often let's his opinion come in the way of facts. And he confuses end price to the consumer which is significantly influenced by taxes and grants with the base price of the car or the cost to make the car, which is not going down significantly. He has a point about the batteries, but his figures are way exaggerated. Structural packs are not made in China or Germany yet and won't for quite some time to come.

But UK got a price drop and they are not in EU and don't get a grant, and they used to only make the right hand drives in China for India New Zealand Oz and UK.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 60,221 ✭✭✭✭unkel

Did they? Just had a look and the base model there is GB52k, that's €60k. We pay €53k. They don't have a grant but they don't have VRT either and lower VAT than us

Order a Model Y over there and you get one made in China. For lots more money. Idiots voted to leave the EU. For once we can laugh as our cars are now substantially cheaper. And better as we are getting made in Germany cars with better suspension, better paint and with the superior blade batteries from BYD

I don't think the offer will go away. It wasn't a one off bargain "Black Friday" style 😂 These cars are there for anyone to order at these prices. Tesla will still make the same profit on one as before, but the cars attract far less taxes and duties now. That's what triggered me to buy one. And hopefully enjoy a few more years of zero / low / negative depreciation that I have been enjoying on EVs for the last 6 years.

To those who have seen them in the flesh, what do ye think of the colours that ye saw? Ocean blue, Urban grey and Dynamic red are main ones in the running but have only seen white, which looked well too be fair, but I just don't want a white car for some reason

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 93 ✭✭baziled13

I like the Dynamic red on the HS plug in if its the same red it will be nice, the website colours blue and red don't look great.

Uk has a trade deal with the EU.....

On 2nd imports from UK there are complicated rules that mean you still get stung for customs.

But on a new car built in Germany to go straight to UK - I think the trade deal gets rid of the 10 percent tariff which BTW is actually a WTO tariff and not an EU one....

Realised on way home, never asked what cables come with it. Anyone know?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 93 ✭✭baziled13

I hope your right and its tax and incentives the from EU the price will not go back up. They can't sell the Model 3 for the price and will have to drop the price and I cancel my MG 4 and pick up a mobel 3 for €44000

Looks to be just the type 2. No granny charger. So you will need a charge point at home.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 60,221 ✭✭✭✭unkel

Or buy a granny charger, maybe second hand from a different make / model. Should work, but I would try before you buy. That said, in 6 years of owing an EV as my main car, I have granny charged maybe a handful of times

You can buy a granny cable for 100-150 quid online these days

Yeah have a tethered charger already at home.

And over last 4 years of EV ownership have barely ever used the granny charger - actually mostly at a time I had a charger issue, and wanted to check if was car or charger

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,383 ✭✭✭Grumpypants

I used the granny charger once while staying with relatives. It saved me a 20 min fast charge top-up in a city I didn't know. But that is a single use-case :)

Otherwise it's been in the boot.

More useful is prob a V2L cable, especially if you live in an area that gets regular power loss or like a bit of camping.

Is the V2L standard even on the base model? If so, that is a super feature. Fair play to MG for including it. About the only extra on any EV I can think of that I would be willing to pay extra for.

Yeah V2l is in the base model too. You have to buy the cable yourself but it the option is there.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 60,221 ✭✭✭✭unkel

Is it some sort of proprietary cable? If so, that's a bit of a bummer. How much for the cable or did anyone ask MG to throw it in as part of the deal?

That is a bit of a difficult question to get an answer to :)

I've not seen anyone find the official one for sale direct from MG. At least not here anyway. Reading up on forums I see prices mentioned of around €400-500 but again no actual website I can actually buy it. That is usually someone saying that thye spoke to a dealer who said they will be available in 6 months and be €400-500.

But you don't need to use their official one. You can grab one from EV Cables in the UK. Starts around £159 for a 0.5m 1 gang plug. 2 gang is £178. Then you can jump in 5m lengths at around £30 per 5m you add all the way up to a 15m long 2 gang at £260.

I see some on Aliexpress too but I wouldn't know much about those really.

I think that is a pretty good answer 😁

Personally there's no way I'd wait until the dealer maybe gets one in 6 months time.

Wow. I've just noticed the V2L as standard. On a 27k car with 50kWh of batteries.

How does one order one of these? Can;'t see a way to preorder on the website and the facebook page was less than helpful ("Message us your contact details"... yeah no thanks just have an online portal please?)
