Apologies for Jumping in, Just wanted to share my story.

I've just been Diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes. Rather complicated how I got hear but the Diagnosis relates partly to a Tyhroid illness and as yet unexplained immune system crash last November requiring hospitalisation for 8 days.

I had been pre diabetic for quite some time , my Thyroid illness resulted in excessively high cholesterol and sugar levels , high blood pressure etc , Meds for both Cholesterol and High blood pressure.

The immune system crash caused my Liver to be compromised , in essence my organs were under attack. I should emphasise I have a strict Diet , Do not Drink alcohol, haven't for over 30 years , I do smoke (I know) and am 55 next month. The liver an amazing organ but my problem appears to be that it's struggling to recover due to excessive cholesterol and sugar levels.

I've had my first educational referral and examination, Feet examined, nerve , circulation tests Referred to Global Vision (actually already referred to eye specialist re Thyroid) and my excellent GP guided me through the Journey ahead. Diagnosis a week ago and medication to be determined as I'm on a regime of other regular meds etc.

I was slightly overwhelmed with the info and information on the Road ahead but pleased at the supports etc on offer. I'd kind of expected the Diagnosis but at 54 a lot to take in with other complications.

Just thought I'd share this story and will check in on this thread more often.

Is maith an scáthán súil charad.

Anybody got any experience of Ozempic?

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,598 ✭✭✭Saint_Mel

I was on it for a few months...

Good thing was I lost a lot of weight fairly quickly ... bad thing was I lost weight as I was constantly sick from it and couldn't stomach eating at all.

It certainly kept my levels down, but since coming off it I've managed to keep a (reasonably) consistent level through diet and exercise

  • Registered Users Posts: 40,102 ✭✭✭✭ohnonotgmail

how soon after you started did the stomach issues start?

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,598 ✭✭✭Saint_Mel

Loss of appetite came very quickly.

I was 1 injection weekly and on average I reckon I had bouts of stomach cramps (and all that goes with it) around 3 days a week every week!

Stopped completely about 2-3 weeks after I came off it

Hi all, for anybody on the Medtronic 780G pump and the Guardian 3 sensors: A few months ago, I was led to believe that the new version of the sensors (Guardian 4) was just around the corner. Haven't heard anything from Medtronic since. Does anyone here have any knowledge about when it will become available in Ireland?

So I went to the Eye and Ear for a check up this morning. First time in a very long time. Maybe 2 years.

    The retinopathy has not progressed

    No fluid in the eye

    Pressure is ok

Reading the chart is still fine

We also had a discussion about the Noctura 400 mask that I get from the UK. They said keep using it as it seems to be working, ie no bleeds for years now.

Back to Newcastle in 2 weeks.

Smoking is disasterous for your eyes if you have diabetes bud.

I've been in contact with Medtronic for months on the release of Guardian 4 in Ireland. Apparently this was in issue with LTI funding rather than anything else, but G4 was approved on LTI on the 1st of August. I just sent in a mail to my diabetes team for them to apply for 780G + G4. I'm not sure how upgrading will work from G3 to G4, Medtronic had no info on an upgrade process as I was asking them if this was possible. But perhaps there will be now that it's available, as far as they are concerned they want everyone on G4. I'm just looking forward to not having to calibrate so frequently with my 640G and G3, it's driving me bananas these days. And all the auto-mode positives will hopefully make a big difference too.

Hi all, I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes two months ago. I was put on Metformin Bluefish 500 mg. Has anyone got any experience of it?😶

It will only help to slightly lower your blood sugar nothing else + side effects. Please research into fasting and ketogenic diet link below.

My son was diagnosed at 6 he's now 20 and since covid he didn't have hospital checks so he has 4 large sharps bins to dispose of at his last appointment, but he's been told now you have to pay €20 for a sharps bin???? Hospital won't talk to me because of his age and he's also in college next week?

Very similar story here. They start you on a low dose for a month that progressively gets higher into month 3. I lost appetite almost straight away with no other side effects till month 3 when started on highest dose and have had similar side effects. I've stopped taking it for the moment but may step down to a lower dose as I did find much better levels, less food intake etc with no negative issues when on lower doses however will see how I go the next few weeks.

For anyone interested in Diabetes Ireland's pre-budget submissions they can be found below. I've dropped an email to my local TD's using the template as a basis too.

hello, I was recently diagnosed type 2 diabetes on my trip abroad. Now back in Ireland , where should I go for treatment? Do I need to find a GP first or I can visit a Diabetes center with my blood sugar reports?

Please advise as the near by medical center is very unprofessional ..took my blood tests and never bothered to show the results.. Any good GP referral in Lucan or near by area will be very helpful.

Reminder on this for those that might have missed it. It's very easy to complain about things but people need to take action and this is the simplest action possible. Just try and get your local TD's into this meeting using the templated letter.

Wherever you got it is the rule of thumb. If he got them in the hospital, return them to the hospital. St. James leave them in the hallway for you to take as you leave, never heard of a hospital charging .

Its not VAT back but a claim against your tax returns. You get 20% back if you've paid sufficient tax. Done through your P21 (now called a statement of liability). When using revenue online put it under Health expenses and take a picture of it to upload or to have if they audit you

I was diagnosed Type 2 last year by one GP at my usual practice, the one I was seeing more regularly had told me my bloods were all fine. Go figure. I'm not on medication.

I've had an ongoing issue for about 4 years with sores, hormone driven I reckon as they are in the groin area and guaranteed to appear before I begin my period. They began as soon as I had a coil removed, which I feel triggered whatever it is. I've brought it up with at least 3 doctors at the GP practice and twice to nurses when getting a smear test and the response has consistently been "Oh, it's probably blood sugars, nothing you can do". I was prescribed antiseptic wash which I've used ever since.

My last two blood tests have shown perfect sugar levels as well as every other blood test being "best you've ever had, 100% perfect" to quote the GP who gave me the results. And still, the sores persist. I can actually tell I'm due my period when they appear.

My concern is that I'm facing the possiblity of surgery (appointment with neurosurgeon tomorrow) on my back and know from previous surgery preparation that washing for several days with antiseptic so that there's no bacteria on your skin is vital. If, however, I do end up having surgery and it happens around the time of my period, then those sores are gonna flare up. They can sometimes be so sore that I find it hard to move for fear of bursting them, which has happened before (sorry if this is graphic and gross). If they are bacterial or infectious, obviously I don't want them around when I might have surgical wounds.

Is it common for these thing to be dismissed as diabetic issues that patients just have to endure? I've been shocked that this has been going on for about 4 years and despite bringing it up several times, not one GP or nurse I've seen has offered any help.

So you were diagnosed as diabetic but not prescribed any medication and your most recent blood tests show no problems? That makes no sense. did they tell you what your levels actually were?

@FonE with your post here and another thread I strongly suggest you see at least a different GP for a second opinion on these issues

Blood tests early 2021 had me one point above normal level (might have been 49 and normal is up to 48...I've forgotten the exact) Then bloods done twice since had me in mid 30s range. As I said, one GP never mentioned diabetes even when I'd asked how the bloods went, I rang for my regular prescription (pain meds, wonky spine) and a different GP rang me asking why I was on them (do they not read your file at all???) and added "Oh, I see you're diabetic" and I was like "What? News to me!" He went so far as to write a prescription for Ozempic injection but when I got the bloods done again and saw the first GP, he said I didn't need it.

First GP has since retired and to be honest it's impossible to get to see any of them and definitely no chance of changing to a different practice as none are taking on patients.

My dad is Type 2 and my Nana was also diabetic so I think the theory is that it's coming for me at some point so might as well treat me like one right away. I've had the retina screening and the foot check, the lot.

  • Registered Users Posts: 392 ✭✭Fionne

I've said it to two GPs and two nurses. Got told to wash with antiseptic but otherwise nothing. It's so hard to get to see anyone face to face, the receptionists are like guard dogs. They can talk on the phone and then instantly forget you. That's why it took 4 months of me ringing and reminding to get the GP to do a simple referral letter about my back problem, which he didn't even get right and took another 3 months to sort out.

I've enquired about changing practice but nobody is taking on patients and/or is operating the same phone consult only nonsense. It's amazing that medical conditions that required sight, touch or sound to diagnose a couple of years ago can now be done without ever meeting the patient.....or so they would have you believe.

Sorry, you were on no diabetic medication and your GP thought you should go on ozempic? That makes even less sense than your first post. There are 2 or 3 steps between no medication and ozempic. You need to get a different GP and ask to be referred to an endocrinologist.

Can some translate those results into units I can understand? 48 is about 6.5 in old units I think. Mid 30s would be 5.4 or so?
