If ever there was confirmation that the French GP is decidely meh, look at sky's team for this weekend. Anthony Davidson, Paul Di Resta and Johnny **** Herbert...

Did ye see the go of him trying to demonstrate a pit stop in the 1920? The grunting was cringe. Just show the process, really no need for so much theatrics.

It works for you without a VPN because all EU streaming subscriptions have to work in all EU countries. Unfortunately this isn't the case for people with Turkish subs.

I see that Sky Sports F1 is finally being added to Virgin Media.

There are 360-degree cameras on every car, but they don't show the footage live. You'll see the footage afterwards, though, on something like the Weekend Debrief. Don't know why they can't show it live.

Something that annoys me about F1 coverage is you don't get a true picture of the speed. The shots are always being zoomed out and then in again as a car approaches and passes. Watch the next time. No stationary shots with barrier cameras like in say Indy 500, where you have the cars whizzing by one by one in a split second. Yes, there are the kerb-cams, but they're more like fisheye lenses and distort the shot, so you don't see the cars approaching.

And one last gripe, not only F1-related. Why tf does it take so long for the the red button to load the content? In this day and age you'd think it'd be instant, but you've to wait 5-6 valuable seconds. This hasn't improved for decades.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,083 ✭✭✭afatbollix

The 360 cameras are too high a bandwidth to do live. It's essentially 4K so they record it to disk and then provide it to the broadcasters after.

Really have to wonder why sky persist with having Nico Rosberg on their coverage... He's not able to get into the paddock (he's not vaccinated against covid) and his takes are not very enlightening. And his weird Skype call video quality is just off putting.

And its not like sky don't have other world champions as part of their team (Damon Hill & Jenson Button). I don't get it...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,146 ✭✭✭mr_edge_to_you

Re Nico, it look ridiculous from a production perspective that he is dialling in from his bedroom. I used to enjoy listening to him when he was part of the coverage and at the track.

Mind you, I would take Nico remotely over Johnny Herbert any day. Damon Hill isn't much better.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,440 ✭✭✭Sunny Dayz

Agreed. I enjoyed Nico Rosberg's presenting and commentating on track. He was comfortable on location and around the other presenters who were also former F1 drivers. Remote presenting feels a bit lazy when there are plenty of presenters available to Sky TV on the ground.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,884 ✭✭✭Hijpo

I thought that Hannah Schmitt "bit" on Sky was extremely poor.

Totalled about 10 minutes. Started off with her talking about what feeds into strategy and then a few minutes on how they caught and passed both ferraris in Monaco including a hand drawn diagram with some colour markers. Rubbish.

Give her a solid thirty minutes and build her profile for christ sake. Cover her interests when she was younger, what she did in college/University, where she started strategy wise, what she did to develope in her role, achievements, something she figured out that makes her proud etc etc

Sky's coverage tomorrow is shorter than usual (starting at 1 instead of 12:30). Think they were shorter today too. Anyone know why? Wondering if it's to do with the queen? Maybe they pulled staff to help with the news coverage?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,045 ✭✭✭Ohmeha

I would suspect its no coincident it's related to the Queen's passing could be staffing resources or also anticipating smaller ratings

    I'm reaching Crofty breaking point...

    Is there any decent alternatives?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,397 ✭✭✭Gamb!t

    Yeah he’s really annoying.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,408 ✭✭✭✭dulpit

Not live that I know of, the f1 TV coverage uses sky, the world feed uses sky. Channel 4 does commentary, but that's only for after the fact highlights.

Is there any other English language commentary out there?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,884 ✭✭✭Hijpo

Only watch alongs on YouTube I'd say.

F1 TV have an option between Sky and their own, usually Ben Edwards and Jolyon Palmer but not always. BBC Radio 5 Live also do English language. Jack Nicholls, Jennie Gow and various guests like Sam Bird, Jamie Chadwick, Mark Priestly and Jack Aitkin do commentary there. It's my option. Only thing is, if they are on 5 Live itself you get interruptions for updates from other sports and if it's on Sports Xtra or the website Jack has to stop commentary from time to time to report for 5 Live.

David Lewis Coulthard embarrassing himself today was hilarious to watch, now he wants wheel to wheel racing and excitement during the last lap of races, the hypocrisy and lack of self awareness of the biased fool knows no bounds.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,250 ✭✭✭✭flazio

Mod, how do I mute someone when they set their profile to private?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,884 ✭✭✭Hijpo

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,163 ✭✭✭chicorytip

He sounded a lot less excitable than normal this particular weekend. Instructed to tone things down a bit, no doubt, on account of you know what.

What a boring race though, eh ?

Crofty's pronunciation of Curva Grande (curveh gronday) was so irritating today. As he talks for a living the least he could do would be to learn the basics. It's not French, it's Italian. And Sergio should be pronounced "Serkhio" as he's Mexican and not Italian ("Ser-jeeo"). Thar goes for them all, in fact.

You might say it's pedantic but it doesn't take much to get it right.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,107 ✭✭✭eviltimeban

His pronunciation of things isn't the biggest problem - it's the constant chuckling that irritates me the most.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,381 ✭✭✭lolie

Yes this, i absolutely detetest that. It's not like there's a comedian beside him, just him spouting nonsense and then laughing at it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,289 ✭✭✭Schorpio

I bought f1TV at the start of the year (thanks to a BA post on here) and it has improved my enjoyment immeasurably. I never watch the Sky-feed, always the in-house f1TV feed. Commentary is so, so much better when Ben Edwards is on the mic. The in-demand features are also brilliant for when the races are on at ungodly times.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,397 ✭✭✭Gamb!t

I only listen to sky for Brundle's commentary which I like, might check out that F1tv coverage though as somedays I need a break from Croft.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,107 ✭✭✭eviltimeban

Jenson is good too when he's commentating.

I was watching the Indycar the other night, and there were long periods where there was no commentary. It was actually quite nice, just to watch the action on the screen without constant talking. There's enough graphics and data on the screen to know what's going on without having to be told what's going on.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,408 ✭✭✭✭dulpit

The long periods of silence are when the US coverage has gone to adverts. Mad how many of them there are.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,107 ✭✭✭eviltimeban

Yeah I knew it wasn't on purpose! :-) But it was a nice break.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,854 ✭✭✭Beekay

    @eviltimeban

Is so nice to just hear the cars go around. Croft just doesn't shut up and finds the most long winded ways to say something simple so he can be clever. There is never any silence or gaps, constant talking, does my head in

  • Registered Users Posts: 515 ✭✭✭Lawlesz

Another one for F1tv here, I am abroad so Sky is not always easy to get. I made the jump to F1tv after my previous method became a little more difficult, shall we say 😁

The commentary is much better, Ben Edwards does a great job. Palmer is fine, although I do miss Brundle. However, him and Karun are the only thing I find I miss on Sky and not having to listen to the likes of Hill and Herbert makes it worth it.

Crofty isnt too bad. just hyper nationalist and sky bemoans that their hero isnt winning anymore

I'm generally busy when the race is on live so I stick with the C4 highlights and find the presenting team generally good. Apart from Webber, he's a dope. Interested to read here the Ben Edwards has gone to F1TV? I'm almost sure when he left F1 he said it was because he was retiring and had had enough of all the travel?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,250 ✭✭✭✭flazio

Disagree on Webber. One of my favourite Co commentators.

Ben Edwards is doing about 10 races for the F1 TV service but he's doing them all remotely from the F1 TV HQ in Biggin Hill outside London, except the British GP which he attended. Had he stayed at Channel 4 he'd have been expected to do all Grand Prix and travel again.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,057 ✭✭✭Vic_08

Although it was pretty obvious that the C4 commentary was done remotely for Japan, only the Welsh gobshyte and Felipe Massa were at the track, Coulthard, Monger and Jacques were in a booth with blinds drawn and never appeared on camera from the paddock.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,083 ✭✭✭afatbollix

So the last race that was done by the local TV station in Monaco is now under F1 control. This year was the first year with FOM in control and I have to say what a difference!

The new angles were great, Who knew a helicopter would add to it but it did.

The only thing I liked about the local director was they were quick with replays, Someone does a overtake down to the chicane and we had a replay before they even came out of it. F1 TV can take half a lap to show us it again.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,408 ✭✭✭✭dulpit

Have to agree. The helicopter shots really show the elevation changes.

They were very slow with replays. At one point they were showing am incident which had an Aston Martin gone off in the background. I had volume low and panicked because I thought it was Alonso, but it turned out to be Stroll from a few laps previous.

Yeah never realized how steep the hill up to the casino was.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,083 ✭✭✭afatbollix

I watched the build-up while doing other things but did they speak of the McLaren and Williams updates? The teams put out a list every weekend with the updates they are bringing as it's no a secret anymore, Gary Anderson used to be brilliant at explaining why the updates will be faster.

F1 TV is the place to go for most of that. Sam Collins is brilliant. Thankfully a lot of it goes on YouTube.

after the first half of the year, I would give a thumbs up for

    Bernie

    Damon

    Danica

    Simon

    Naomi

    ................

but Ted and Karun are brilliant..

    ................

    Croft annoys me to bejaysus...

apologies, as I am new to the thread.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,250 ✭✭✭✭flazio

Crofty set to miss 3 races this year. Imola, Azerbaijan and Austria. Current BBC Radio commentator Harry Benjamin will step in.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,408 ✭✭✭✭dulpit

Jesus the TV direction in Saudi was appalling. Constant cutting from in car to track camera and back again. Hard to keep track of who was where. Helicopter shots that you couldn't really see the cars with. And on a couple of occasions we missed overtakes because they were showing replays.

F1 tv direction has been poor for a while, but this was particularly bad...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,408 ✭✭✭✭dulpit

Oh also, Crofty, Karun and Bernie as a commentary team was quite good. But annoying when they kept telling us about the Brits, but apart from that it was a good mix.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,250 ✭✭✭✭flazio

Well I did my usual sync up with the BBC crew. Sadly website only today so no play back available, but along side lead commentator Harry Benjamin (in the back) were from left to right, Jack Aitkin former Williams reserve who drove when Russell first bumped up to Mercedes-Benz in 2020, Ruth Buscombe, former strategist for Alfa Romero and Jennie Gow who continues to make great progress recovering from her stroke.

I don't know how anybody can stand Ted, his smugness gets on my skin something fierce. He used to be good a long time ago but he really let it get to his head.

I don't think its harsh at all, he isn't good at all. Sure he has knowledge but the rest of the package of what he brings isn't worth it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,661 ✭✭✭quokula

I saw an interview with Ruth Buscombe on the Pitstop podcast on youtube a week or two ago and it was one of the best pieces of F1 related content I've watched in a long time. It's insane the amount of work done by so many strategists, engineers etc that gets pretty much zero coverage and attention in the media. The amount of detail she goes into in the interview, from doing track walks and noting down access road and marshal post details so they can estimate the likelihood of a safety car for a given incident anywhere on track, to the way they would look at the rubber laid down on the clean / dirty side of the track and feed it back in and recalibrate their simulation code - a result of this being that she was the one responsible for the infamous deliberate penalty for Felipe Massa by breaking the gearbox seal to put both their cars on the clean side of the track. It's incredible the amount of thought that goes into every little detail.

Not sure if this was common knowledge, but all those extra on board feeds that Sky keep nattering about are available to Now Ireland customers by clicking the F1 icon on the Sports page
