I would suspect its no coincident it's related to the Queen's passing could be staffing resources or also anticipating smaller ratings

    I'm reaching Crofty breaking point...

    Is there any decent alternatives?

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,376 ✭✭✭Gamb!t

    Yeah he’s really annoying.

Not live that I know of, the f1 TV coverage uses sky, the world feed uses sky. Channel 4 does commentary, but that's only for after the fact highlights.

Is there any other English language commentary out there?

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,782 ✭✭✭Hijpo

Only watch alongs on YouTube I'd say.

F1 TV have an option between Sky and their own, usually Ben Edwards and Jolyon Palmer but not always. BBC Radio 5 Live also do English language. Jack Nicholls, Jennie Gow and various guests like Sam Bird, Jamie Chadwick, Mark Priestly and Jack Aitkin do commentary there. It's my option. Only thing is, if they are on 5 Live itself you get interruptions for updates from other sports and if it's on Sports Xtra or the website Jack has to stop commentary from time to time to report for 5 Live.

David Lewis Coulthard embarrassing himself today was hilarious to watch, now he wants wheel to wheel racing and excitement during the last lap of races, the hypocrisy and lack of self awareness of the biased fool knows no bounds.

Mod, how do I mute someone when they set their profile to private?

He sounded a lot less excitable than normal this particular weekend. Instructed to tone things down a bit, no doubt, on account of you know what.

What a boring race though, eh ?

Crofty's pronunciation of Curva Grande (curveh gronday) was so irritating today. As he talks for a living the least he could do would be to learn the basics. It's not French, it's Italian. And Sergio should be pronounced "Serkhio" as he's Mexican and not Italian ("Ser-jeeo"). Thar goes for them all, in fact.

You might say it's pedantic but it doesn't take much to get it right.

His pronunciation of things isn't the biggest problem - it's the constant chuckling that irritates me the most.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,329 ✭✭✭lolie

Yes this, i absolutely detetest that. It's not like there's a comedian beside him, just him spouting nonsense and then laughing at it.

I bought f1TV at the start of the year (thanks to a BA post on here) and it has improved my enjoyment immeasurably. I never watch the Sky-feed, always the in-house f1TV feed. Commentary is so, so much better when Ben Edwards is on the mic. The in-demand features are also brilliant for when the races are on at ungodly times.

I only listen to sky for Brundle's commentary which I like, might check out that F1tv coverage though as somedays I need a break from Croft.

Jenson is good too when he's commentating.

I was watching the Indycar the other night, and there were long periods where there was no commentary. It was actually quite nice, just to watch the action on the screen without constant talking. There's enough graphics and data on the screen to know what's going on without having to be told what's going on.

The long periods of silence are when the US coverage has gone to adverts. Mad how many of them there are.

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,087 ✭✭✭eviltimeban

Yeah I knew it wasn't on purpose! :-) But it was a nice break.

    @eviltimeban

Is so nice to just hear the cars go around. Croft just doesn't shut up and finds the most long winded ways to say something simple so he can be clever. There is never any silence or gaps, constant talking, does my head in

Another one for F1tv here, I am abroad so Sky is not always easy to get. I made the jump to F1tv after my previous method became a little more difficult, shall we say 😁

The commentary is much better, Ben Edwards does a great job. Palmer is fine, although I do miss Brundle. However, him and Karun are the only thing I find I miss on Sky and not having to listen to the likes of Hill and Herbert makes it worth it.

I'm generally busy when the race is on live so I stick with the C4 highlights and find the presenting team generally good. Apart from Webber, he's a dope. Interested to read here the Ben Edwards has gone to F1TV? I'm almost sure when he left F1 he said it was because he was retiring and had had enough of all the travel?

  • Registered Users Posts: 12,793 ✭✭✭✭flazio

Disagree on Webber. One of my favourite Co commentators.

Ben Edwards is doing about 10 races for the F1 TV service but he's doing them all remotely from the F1 TV HQ in Biggin Hill outside London, except the British GP which he attended. Had he stayed at Channel 4 he'd have been expected to do all Grand Prix and travel again.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,041 ✭✭✭Vic_08

Although it was pretty obvious that the C4 commentary was done remotely for Japan, only the Welsh gobshyte and Felipe Massa were at the track, Coulthard, Monger and Jacques were in a booth with blinds drawn and never appeared on camera from the paddock.

So the last race that was done by the local TV station in Monaco is now under F1 control. This year was the first year with FOM in control and I have to say what a difference!

The new angles were great, Who knew a helicopter would add to it but it did.

The only thing I liked about the local director was they were quick with replays, Someone does a overtake down to the chicane and we had a replay before they even came out of it. F1 TV can take half a lap to show us it again.

  • Registered Users Posts: 10,245 ✭✭✭✭dulpit

Have to agree. The helicopter shots really show the elevation changes.

They were very slow with replays. At one point they were showing am incident which had an Aston Martin gone off in the background. I had volume low and panicked because I thought it was Alonso, but it turned out to be Stroll from a few laps previous.

Yeah never realized how steep the hill up to the casino was.

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,037 ✭✭✭afatbollix

I watched the build-up while doing other things but did they speak of the McLaren and Williams updates? The teams put out a list every weekend with the updates they are bringing as it's no a secret anymore, Gary Anderson used to be brilliant at explaining why the updates will be faster.

F1 TV is the place to go for most of that. Sam Collins is brilliant. Thankfully a lot of it goes on YouTube.
