Range Rover Velar ignored in Ireland

    Was in Tullamore yesterday and spotted a high spec. Velar with big wheels . Looked very impressive with nearly as much presence as a full fat Range Rover . Got me thinking aside from seeing the odd basic spec. model with small wheels , you dont see many on the road or in dealers showrooms.

    With better looks ( with right spec. ) and a better badge than the Discovery and a similar price , why arent these flying out of the showrooms like say the RR sport is ?

    The Discovery is more usable for families, its therefore considered expensive for what it is. When you could just pay a little more and have a proper Range Rover.


    Due to taxes, it really doesn't make sense here in Ireland.

    I had an X5 until a couple of years ago and really liked the look of the Velar and was waiting for it to be released. It looks stunning IMO.

    However, although I don't go up mountain passes. I don't see the logic of not having a rear wash wipe on a vehicle that size and dimensions. In other words, not practical enough. Mate bought a new RR Sport a few days ago and again, even though when buying most of these vehicles, it's s prestige \ heart purchase, it's just a lot more practical that the Velar.

    yes but is the Sport not alot more expensive than the Velar ? Dont know what it is , but have never like the current or original Sport model - just think the design is very cluttered.

    That fact that they are a ball of sh!t reliability wise might have something to do with it. Heard so many stories from lads working in Range Rover about Velars needing new engines after a couple of thousand kms and a host of other problems

    Yes , i know someone working with them also who says they make them too complicated also ( probably why they drive so well ) , mind you Irish motorists seem to love Land Rovers - there is still good demand for even say 15 year old models .

    Its obviously the image and driving experience that does it for people. Definitely think a well specced Velar beats a RRS for looks / image.

    Our one is just coming up to 3 years old . Never a days grief but i am well aware that isn't always the case with Jlr stuff. Very economical and cheap to run , long service intervals ,cheap road tax on the d180 ,very cheap insurance for some odd reason and overall a great family car. New P400e Velar hybrid ordered and arriving on the 24th Nov into the garage for a 2022 plate. Oddly enough got a trade in value last Jan and ended up getting offered 11k more for trade in for next Jan from the same garage. Amazing 2nd values at the moment.

    not a typo ,amazed , went to the garage with a friend who was interested in buying , he purchased a disco commercial , bought velar and defender commercial the same day , incredible trade in value.

    i spotted your reg surrounds , that same dealer you bought your current Velar from ? They arent big into used sales - seem to sell most vehicles in the trade.

    yes i noticed quite a few vehicles in Dublin from them also , so must be doing good deals - just surprised if they are selling off alot of their trade ins.

    I was crazy about them on paper, before they came out, but was disappointed when I went to see one. I found them quite small on the inside compared with anything else in the range. Also the pricing was crazy when you spec'd it to look like the launch images.

    It's a fab car to be fair,the p400e is a joy, dead silent , fantasticly economical if not doing journeys over 180km in one go too often , new pivi pro has sorted all the infotainment gremlins... Very happy with it

    Another X5 driver here and had the chance to rent a Velar on holidays last year and was sooooooo underwhelming!

    After 4 days I wanted to return it, certainly not a drivers car. Like a hippo on chocolate skates!!!!

    What kind of money are they in any of the spec mentioned here?

    I don't have kids, don't drive a whole pile (<12k km/yr) and like a nice car but I'm always astonished at the amount of these (what I'm assuming are €80/90k+) RR's floating around. I had a loan of a full fat RR Vogue for a weekend a few months back and it was certainly a nice place to sit but the fuel consumption was astonishing.

    LOVE THE VELAR SHAPE AND STYLE OVER THE LUMP THAT IS THE X5. Hit dynamic mode and sports on the velar and it stiffens up and shifts i tell you.

    cant understand why LR in Ireland at the moment seem to be selling mostly Commercial Discoveries and Defenders , thought there would be decent demand for Hybrid passenger Defenders and Discovery sports etc. and they are higher price vehicles so more profit

    I'd imagine the vast majority are bought or leased through a business, hence why the are commerical. You cannot claim VAT back on petrol or on the price of a passenger vehicle. Hybrids are also not except from BIK.

    I have a defender commercial and my wife has the velar. Pricing is gone weird at the moment and while pricing a new defender commercial for next year,

    i noticed its now cheaper to buy a defender P400e hybrid passenger than a D250 commercial. Main reason is the low vrt rate for hybrids.

    One of the biggest reason over and above being able to claim back vat on vehicle and diesel a company car driver would choose a commercial over a passenger ,is commercials attract a near zero rate of BIK compared to the passenger version. In something the price of a defender ,depending on mileage you could be paying 30k a year on BIK if you want back seats. Also commericals tend to hold their value much better than their passenger versions .

    does your Defender have x3 front seats ? - seems good idea but imagine it takes away from comfort /prestige of a high priced vehicle.

    i am just surprised not to see more passenger LR's around , down Cork direction anyhow

    Not when they are colour coded , have big sized wheels and leather interior. LR products are also rarely boring to drive.

    Velar is very expensive for what it is I think that’s the main reason it hasn’t sold that well , also smaller than similarly priced stuff but then again RR are expensive across the board !

    my wife loved it and we looked at it but ended up going full electric with Audi as RR aren’t there yet.

    As it doesn't look like a range rover I don't think it benefits from the Range rover brand name like the sport does

    Got a price off spirit in dublin for a basic sevice on my 2l diesel velar

    , oil and oil filter only. €690 plus vat. Thats €847. Absolute rip off, over twice whats charged in the UK.

    Problem is they have you by the short n curlys cos main dealers are the only ones that can update the online service history.

    I’d try get a price from a Land Rover specialist, or an independent mechanic. Somewhere with a good name that can give you a printed vat invoice so you can build up a decent physical service history without paying €850 every time you need to change the oil.

    I couldn’t imagine an oil change being more than €250 inc VAT at a decent independent garage.
