Do you have a side hustle?

I've recently started delivering food at the weekends for some extra cash. I tried dropshipping and print on demand for a while, but between the ads and customs charges, I made very little profit.

Do you have a second job or any sources of income outside your main job?

I very occasionally do a specific function from an old job for them. Haven't had to for a while so not sure that arrangement still stands actually - and it's not really worth enough to chase up!

I have two customers left from when I did self employed IT support, total income from that would be a grand a year maybe.

Fully tax compliant, never got beyond Form 12 level.

A second job, hate the way sidehustle sounds like it's something clever, it's just more work in time that should be your own. Sad that people's main job doesn't pay them enough to live as they want.

Oh well, give me an easy life and a peaceful death.

Go home most weekends, if anyone happens to die at the weekend my uncle (parish gravedigger) will ask me to help him bury them. Saves his back and I get a few ton .

I earn money from the graft of others through renting out properties as well as my full time job trolling on boards.

It's not surprising with the current cost of living.

Sidehustle? Sounds vaguely sexual and not in a good way.

I am on an Expert Panel for a government regulatory body , meet several times a year with several documents to review in advance of the meetings. Its related to what i trained in for most of the career , you can only sit on the panel for 2 years. So its not a job for the boys or for life scenario but it looks good on the CV for sure.

After the way my main job income dried up when the economy crashed in 2008, I never want to be 100% dependent on one income source again.

  • Registered Users Posts: 280 ✭✭global23214124

Used to have grinds in college. Took surveys and stuff for a while but that was not much. Would go back to grinds if I had to get some extra income in the door.

Yep, freelance writing for a website and social media, and proof-reading/editing.

Main job is sales - the plan is to go four days soon.

No, but the number of people who i know and are in the 40-65 age bracket who do is astonishing. A dreadful indictment of the times we are living in…

Ok, pretty much all of them with mortgages and a couple of kids. One is a supermarket merchandiser, goes around building those end displays in different supermarkets all over Dublin mainly but other parts of Leinster too …apparently that game is a race to the bottom, super competitive and undercut dot com, he’s refusing certain work now as when his time, petrol and other expenses are taken into account his profit margin is well, marginal. He is well known on the amateur golfing circuit for years and does maintenance on two golf courses to help the cash flow..

My friend does that display stuff in Cork (or anywhere else she gets work) since she was made redundant. She seems to be getting on well. Probably not as cut-throat outside Dublin area.

Sell a lot of personal items that are lying about the house and that'll never be used again. I've over 20 years worth of stuff, so worth several thousand euros.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,457 ✭✭✭Padre_Pio

I was thinking of getting into homemade arty stuff like pottery.

I was wandering around a crafts fair and realised that most of the stuff is sh*te, but that's what people want!

No one wants a perfectly made anything, since it looks mass produced. People want sh*tty handmade cups with imperfections and fingerprints. Or sculptures that'l are a few sticks tied together with tinsel.

The bar is low and the profits are high.

The main timesink is Youtube. It's murdered my evenings, though, little family or play time resulting, but on the other hand, at least I won't be on the street if I lose my day job. I also get a few dollars here and there out of the Army reserves, but the main benefit from it is that the longer I stay at it, the larger the pension.

I'd say it's more about diversification of income stream than getting more money...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,462 ✭✭✭Ray Palmer

They really don't make much money for the time and effort. Materials aren't cheap nor the equipment like kiln. Then they have to go place to sell them and wait around to sell the stuff. Once you break it down it comes down to a very low hourly income. Fine for people who have the time. Looked at it myself and decided that working all weekend for the same as 2-3 hours of my regular pay wasn't worth it.

Thought about doing some 'nixers' in the evenings/weekends to supplement things... but the cost on time and mental health from lack of a break from the grind was too much. i'd rather have less money and more headspace.

Don't you dare leave youtube. I didn't think I was interested in tanks and now I am. You bastard.

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

I rent out a couple of rooms.

  • Moderators, Social & Fun Moderators Posts: 13,004 Mod ✭✭✭✭JupiterKid

Yep, I sell some of my paintings/artwork and pottery (been a long time on the latter!) from time to time, but it's a really small income stream in the greater scheme of things.

I also jointly own a property with my two older sisters which we rent out - so a modest income from that source also.

Won't be chucking in the day job just yet! lol

Selling your artwork must give you great pleasure.

This year I managed to harvest a bowl of potatoes and one apple .

I don't but worked a couple of nights at the Fleadh as a favour and the extra few bob was handy.

If I could do something that'd give me €100 a week into the hand it'd be nice.

I successfully rooted and grew some hedging when I couldn't afford to buy any. I thought about possibly doing it to sell a few and have 50 plants growing away as I had the pots. It won't make me rich if I sell them but I enjoy it.

My side hustle is beekeeping. Some years I even make a profit!

Thanks for looking after the bees. A little dude was staggering around the ground the other day - don't know whether injured/sick or got really wet (there were heavy showers) or was just at the end of its natural life. I looked up what to do to revive it, and there are conflicting views on the whole sugar water thing, so I peeled some skin off a grape and put the peeled side on the ground next to the bee. The bee was nibbling away on it for ages. And the cat (striped) was fascinated. She was thinking "That tiny furry stripy thing is just a miniature version of me" (probably). Anyway, she made a pounce for the bee so I had to lift her away and bring her in.

Checked on the bee after but the poor auld craythur had died.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,650 ✭✭✭victor8600

Thanks for looking after the little bee! To be honest, honeybees are doing ok, as it's a beekeeper's job to keep hives healthy and thriving. It is the other small animals (birds and insects) that I worry about, as they need diverse habitats to survive. Crop fields usually provide little food for these animals by design and could be deadly for any insect if the crop requires spraying with an insecticide. Similarly, monoculture forests (as an example, densely packed sitka spruce plantations) are not great for the wildlife either. On the other hand, Ireland has a lot of bramble hedges and these are great for small wildlife.

I have a couple of seasonal ones - a bit of overtime in the day job comes in handy over the summer months. Plus, I do some paperwork and/or hard graft in the family business occasionally which gives me another few bob from the hubby! Lovely to know there is a means of grabbing a few extra quid if needs be.

teaching along with farming although not sure in what order they are both precarious. id like to go full time farming but the teaching is easy money in the right school.

You could always bring a cattle prod into the school to control the kids and combine your two careers.

Ya I do a bit of drug dealing, pays well I must say, no tax, steady flow of customers.

It's getting more and more like the States now where people on what should be decent salaries can't earn enough for a comfortable quality of living. I have something I do which involves sport and I get about and extra 160 a week for 8 hours of my time. But because I love it I don't think of it as work.

I'd imagine with the spiraling costs of living and the working man/woman paying for housing of the unemployed by choice crowd we will see more and more people working 2 jobs and 90 hours a week.

Anyway a bit heavy for after hours.

My advise is to try to make money out of something you love and ensure it's cash in hand.
