There is only any point in worrying about the things that you can change, and you nor I nor the forum collectively can do a jot about climate change.

The 200 odd governments and the world's 100 largest companies are the organisations that need to move on this.

I'm more inclined to say 2016 was one of the wettest years.

Absolute unbelievable hype now on all the news channels over this. The fear campaign is being ramped up.

Just watching 9 o'clock News on RTE, report about Irish Water warning to restrict water use due to increased pressure on supply particularly in Agriculture/ farming. I live in a rural area and all farms I know have a private water supply that has nothing to do with Irish Water. More sensationalism by RTE.

Fùck me RTE have reached new levels of bullshìt....much worse than the windy days....

Yes, Climate change exists but give it a fùcking rest....if it was 30 degrees for a couple of weeks...then roll out your maynooth professors to talk shìte...leave people to enjoy the fine spell of weather...

the only thing we are "suffering" is your campaign of incessant covid/climate/war coverage......

🤣 We've had a couple of days of sun and they are calling for restricted water use. These people are pure crooks.

I'm loving this weather and i hope it lasts the summer.

A change tomorrow and for the rest of the week, cooler and changeable, so not lasting for now anyway.

Colman O'Sullivan stuttered through that news report. It looks like even he couldn't believe what he was being told to stay. Sharon trying to ramp it up as well

Just watched the 9pm news there...often times they would end the bulletin with scenes of people out enjoying themselves to some nice background music....not tonight...its obviously deemed to be a bad news story!

Another final thought, if it snows heavily on christmas day in Ireland (it never does)....will we have RTE news out covering the horrors of climate change???.....will we fùck....

That would be a "freak" event....so it should warrant the same type of nonsense coverage they gave this today....

    "HEAT APOCALYPSE!!!!"

I really don't understand why people think the media like to over hype these things.

Rumours George Lee was seen sweating profusely while taking his thermometer out of the air dryer claiming the temperature record was broken.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,383 ✭✭✭olestoepoke

And a strategically placed article below with the headline "Climate Apocalypse" priming us to slowly rob us blind.

I'm old enough to remember the hysteria around acid rain, so needless to say I'm a little pessimistic when it comes to what's on the news.

The temperature was within 0.3° of the record.

i know this thread is not attracting the best and brightest but the proof of worldwide climate change or global warming doesn’t actually depend on that particular record being broken in kilkenny, Ireland.

Hope people take what RTE say with a big pinch of salt now after this apocalypse.

You sound very upset that the record wasn't broken. Have a walk outside it's lovely out it might cheer you up a bit.

I don’t care if the actual record is broken because it means nothing either way to the debate on climate warming, a debate I have little interest in. It’s happening but I don’t stress about it.

this whole thread is full of people clearly angry, upset and indeed discombobulated about RTE - a channel they don’t even have to watch - report on an extremely rare weather event in Ireland. I assume the was the hottest day in many peoples lifetime. Worth a report on the Irish news channel, you’d think

there’s a fair amount of projection going on, too. Clearly the cranks are thinking about climate change and hoping the Irish record wouldn’t be broken, because in their limited way of thinking as long as the record holds in Kilkenny ( though it be beaten across Europe ) then climate change is a bust. From this limited understanding of statistics, they think the other “side” needs the record to be broken to prove climate change. All eyes on Kilkenny.

What actually proves climate change is all the records from all the stations worldwide showing increases in temperature over time.

now remember back when your teachers sent reports back like “bit giddy, not great at maths” or “wouldn’t expect him to be an engineer, or much else really, can he play the trombone?” - well you should have taken those reports seriously - not just in your career but in general life.

Why is there always conflict on here?

The weather is perfect, enjoy it while it lasts.

Two quotes I heard on the news today:

"In the UK in 1970 40 degrees was a 1/1000 year event. Now it's a 1/86 year event" Prof John Sweeney, NUI Maynooth

Can anyone explain how in the fk anyone could come to this conclusion? Who's to say in 2038 it won't become a 1/5000 year event?

The other quote was from someone in the met office saying that the IPCC say climate change won't affect Ireland as much as mainland Europe. Why not? This Climate Change is being very selective about where it targets. If it's not affecting us that much then why are we paying through the nose in tax to prevent it?

I am worried… is this actually a sign that the earth is actually cooling? Apparently 1887 has the record of 33.3C, today was only 33 c,,,., is this a sign of an approaching Ice age?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,937 ✭✭✭kowloonkev

Let's be fair, RTE is a despicable organisation on so many levels that even when they are telling the truth most people wouldn't believe them. A real journalist probably hasn't set foot in Donnybrook in about twenty years. They are just a mouthpiece for sleazy politicians who want us to focus our attention and energy on minor social justice issues and popular science. Anything to distract from what they are doing.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 9,067 ✭✭✭Ficheall

I'd guess that it's something along the lines of creating a bell curve based on data around the two years and seeing how many standard deviations 40 degrees is from the means, or similar.

And the Atlantic will insulate us a little from climate change for a while, perhaps.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,059 ✭✭✭WesternZulu

The reason we have to pay for climate change even though we won't relatively be as badly affected by it is because it's a global problem and we've one of the highest per capita carbon footprints in the world.
