2022 World Athletics Championships, Oregon

Time to get the ball rolling!

The championships begin this Friday, July 15th, and will run through until Sunday, July 24th.

Oregon is eight hours behind us, so most of their evening sessions will take place from about 1-4am our time. Most of the action will be shown live on both BBC One and Three, I assume it will also be broadcast live on YouTube.

Entry lists are below, but will obviously be subject to change before Friday.

Should be great.

Very interesting to see if the Jamaican women sweep the 100. In the 200 big question is if Abby Steiner can win and thwart them.

Also the Ethiopians have all their best athletes running so will most likely have a big medal haul.

Any Irish athlete making a final will be a good result.

Haven't gone through all our athletes yet, who's our best chance of making a semi final or final? Maybe Sarah Lavin?

I'm most intrigued by what's going on with Sifan Hassan. Has entered the same three events as Tokyo but has yet to decide on which two (or maybe even one) she'll pick. She returned to the track in Portland last weekend and jogged a 15:13 5k, though I've seen a lot of comments (which I disagree with) that she looked laboured and uncomfortable. Time will tell I guess.

There’s 5 USA men in the 400m. Think that’s ridiculous myself

Will be interesting to see how David Kenny goes in the 20km walk. He entered world class discussion earlier this year. Still very young for a walker too

Adeleke the most interesting track athlete for Ireland imo. Her 400m SB is in the top 16 but she’s still very inexperienced at that distance

Looking forward to seeing Rhasidat Adeleke the most. Not expecting her to medal or anything but intrigued to see how fast she can go against proper senior competition for the first time. She clearly has huge potential.

Experienced relay runner for Texas in the ncaa's and great addition to the previous team.

Is she running the mixed relay though? I saw a video from the Irish training camp in a rural Oregon county about 40 miles outside Eugene.

Sophie Becker and Sharlene Mawdsley were practicing exchanges with Chris O’Donnell and two other male athletes that I didn’t recognize. One was a tall fair haired guy; the second was a mixed race guy with dreadlocks. No sign of Adeleke in the training camp.

I also saw Mark English, Sarah Healy, and Thomas Barr in the video. The rest of the Irish team seemed to be there.

Seems to be a bit of a logistical nightmare for some overseas athletes trying to get to Oregon, visa issues (which I presume should have been sorted before now) and flight cancellations. Not ideal preparation.

Noticed that as well but she is also selected for the 4x100 and there was no sign of any of them in the report and she may in that event rather than the mixed relay. (Could of course do both)

Alternatively she may be in Texas with her coach rather than with the team at that stag. This is only a guess on my part.

I see that although she was originally listed for the 4x100 Kate Doherty is now named on the official list instead of her.

Tough heat for Sarah Healy. Hopefully she can pull it out of the bag.

I’m optimistic for the mixed relay. That’s a strong squad. O’Donnell is in good form, Adeleke is clearly talented, and Becker is very solid. Don’t know much about Jack Raftery, but hopefully he performs well.

Fingers crossed they make the final. Feel a bit disappointed Sharlene Mawdsley wasn’t selected; she’s a strong relay runner. I think we’re putting out our ‘A’ team though.

If anything, Rhasidat went off a tad too quickly in the first 200m but a great lap from her and they qualified with ease.

Chris O’Donnell did great on the first leg too. Raftery and Adeleke were stellar. Loved seeing an Irish team so competitive.

Hate to say it, but Sophie Becker was mediocre. It might be worth substituting in Sharlene Mawdsley. I’ve seen her raise her game a few times in relays. We really need our second woman running well below 52 in the final.

Terrific performance though.

I think Chris ran a sensible leg and looks like he has more to offer. Sophie looked to have ran solid but not sure there's more to find, so maybe Sharlene. With legs 3 & 4 repeating their efforts, they'd be in the mix for bronze.
