To be fair Sophie has been by far Irelands most consistent 400m runner this year. Quite a bit ahead of Sharlene

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,814 ✭✭✭Hamachi

True. However, her SB/PB is 51.83. She only delivered a 52.2x performance in that leg from a running start. I believe she was either the slowest or second slowest woman. Not impressive.

Sharlene’s PB is 51.70 and she has run 52.10 very recently. She’s not far behind at all. She also ran stellar relay legs in the world relays last year and in the world indoors in Belgrade earlier this year, keeping pace with Kaczmarek of Poland. I feel like she has the potential to really raise her game here. Team will probably remain the same though.

If my maths is correct. Relay final is on at 03:50.

Sharlene always seems to find an extra gear in the relays whether it's 4x100 or 4x400. I don't know if it's because of the fact she's not making a blocks start but she always seems to have an excellent handover. I'd absolutely have her in ahead of Sophie Becker, and that isn't a slight on Sophie at all either.

It's such a shame it looks like Adeleke isn't running in the Europeans. That women's 4x400 is very competitive with her in it.

Hmm, would've liked her to get a bit closer to her PB, but not to be.

Adeleke pulled out of the final - apparently she was ill after the heat.

Don't think Ireland would have medalled anyway, the time was exceptionally fast.

Hopefully she be OK for the 400m heats tomorrow.

    Felix too old here!!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,244 ✭✭✭✭Strazdas

Yes, unclear what happened to her but hopefully she makes a speedy recovery from whatever it was and it doesn't affect her form.

Quick update - Adeleke is not ill thankfully, but it seems her coach requested that she not compete (presumably to spare her from having too taxing a week, given her young age).

Really looking forward to the women's 10,000m. The medals should be between Gidey, Taye, Hassan, Obiri and McColgan.

There's questions over Hassan's fitness, but I think if she's in any kind of decent shape then she'll win. Gidey should be the favourite, but unless she's alone at the bell then it's difficult not to see someone out kicking her. Taye ran 30:44 on her debut a few weeks ago but I don't doubt she can go quicker.

Obiri is better at 5,000m, but I think there's a chance of a bronze here. If things go right for McColgan then she should also be in the medal mix, and I'd be thrilled if she walked away with something here. Really looking forward to this one!

What a finish, thrilled for Gidey finally getting a world title! Delighted for Obiri to take a brilliant silver, has now medalled over 1500, 5k and 10k, what a career she's had. And to think she said she was done with the track after Tokyo!

Not shocked that Hassan failed to medal given her questionable form, but I am shocked she lost it in a sprint finish. Sad for McColgan, thought she'd do a lot better.

For those watching the WA stream, Rob 'The Talker' Walker is in his element. Prefer him over Hutchings anyway.

Will take something special this week for him to get as excited as when he showed off Yan Bingtao's house.

Thomas Barr coming up soon in the men's 400m hurdles, around 9.44pm.

    Barr through in 2nd

Timed his run to perfection - he was in 5th place at halfway.

Great running by Coscoran to make the semis.

I was expecting a US 1-2-3 in the 100 not so sure now. Jacobs was a DNS.

Dina Asher Smith looked impressive in her 100 heat.

Brilliant run from Coscoran, 3:36:36 PB and 3rd place to easily qualify from his heat.

Thomas Barr will have to break his season best for a chance to qualify for the final.

Is it just me or does this WC not have a WC feel off it. More like a meet..

I feel the same. I think it’s the venue, Hayward field. It lacks the gravitas of some of the European venues like Berlin, Oslo, Letzigrund etc.. The flip side is that it’s a more intimate atmosphere for spectators.

So far anyway, yeah. Crowd not great, and held in an ugly stadium in the middle of nowhere. London 2017 really was the gold standard for a world championships. Hopefully Budapest next year is better!

Yes, the size of the venue is not helping - rather small with low grandstands. Looks particularly bad when the stadium is quarter full. Even last night, I'm sure I spotted a good few empty seats.

    O'Donnell through. Great running.

O'Donnell squeaks through. Next up, Sophie and Rhasidat.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,717 ✭✭✭YFlyer

    Adeleke second and through.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,244 ✭✭✭✭Strazdas

Looked very comfortable - she clearly eased down towards the finish.

Solid run from Sophie Becker too. Unlucky not to squeeze through as a fastest loser.

That second heat was very tasty. McPherson, Kaczmarek, and Klaver are all class athletes. I wouldn’t be surprised to see all three in the top five or six when the dust settles.

Big question is can Paulino upset Miller-Uibo?
