@Witchie hope you managed to sleep, if the councilman is the one taking bribes, who blew up his hotel ?

I was in Shanghai way back in ,08 I think.. Had a dinner that blew my mind away , shrimp from the river. I went walking early o e morning and ate some food from street stalls while been flabbergasted at the bamboo scaffolding. But food was unreal and not at all like Irish Chinese restaurants.

From my understanding, he used to be head of planning in the city. The current incumbent was arrested a few weeks ago along with a lawyer and someone else for corruption and are awaiting trial. The lawyers office was burnt down the night he was arrested, most likely in an attempt to destroy evidence.

My thinking is that the guy targeted last night either pissed some mafia dudes off who were making money from the land grabbing that is going on or was the one who bung the others out to dry.

I just realised this morning that I have net this guy. He is currently the head of the compulsory health insurance fund here and when I applied for residency I had to go to him to register for health insurance.

Am sure it will all come out over the next few weeks. I just hope the bomb was a warning and that all will calm down again.

@Purple Mountain thank you, I did get some sleep.

It's funny how having soldiers shove machine guns in my face since I was a baby was "normal" for me. We crossed the border at least once a week and it was almost a game to try spot the soldiers lying in the ditch or wondering if we would all get dragged out of the car again while they tore it apart.

It's only been since I have been here really that I have realised how weird that it is that I normalised it all. Lots of the Americans here want to know about it all, many of them because they loved Derry Girls, so as I have talked about it, I kinda have unpacked it more. One ex-military guy here reckons I actually have some PTSD from it , but I also know I was lucky compared to those across the border.

There is still so much healing to be done.

Hi Witchie, I'm not one bit surprised how upset you were last night follpwing the hotel bombingif you were in Enniskillen on that dreadful day and heard the blast. You must have witnessed the chaotic aftermath with the emergency services rushing around. That must have been horrific, I'm so sorry you went through that. Hope you are feeling better today.

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,597 ✭✭✭Witchie

My grandmother actually just missed walking into the blast because my mum offered to drive her to mass that day. Had she walked, she would have been in the middle of it.

As we were in my cousin's on the edge of town, we heard it but just thought it was a rumble of thunder or a heavy lorry going by.

Am ok today. Just tired. On my way to the hairdresser so that will cheer me up. 😁

It's incredible how many of the things we thought of as "normal" as kids only turn out to be weird or disconcerting in hindsight. It was normal for me to have air raid drills in school, have fighter jets thunder over our house at treetop height, to see massive army convoys on the road, or to go to the town hall for some paperwork only to have to walk past heavily armed and armored federal police. All part and parcel of living in west Germany in the 1980s, thanks to the cold war and the RAF/Baader Meinhof terror campaign respectively.

I can only imagine how much of your experience is still with you. Glad that you're opening up about it more. Just look after yourself, we're here if you need to.

Good luck trying to figure me out. I haven't managed that myself yet!

Deskside in my home office, working away... rotten day out there for the end of June. Have to pop out shortly to get a 21st birthday card for my nephew in Holland.

The year halfway through already! How did that happen?? 😲🤔

@Grem and Duvet - please look after yourselves, get the time off work needed and plenty of R&R - that is an order!! lol

@Witchie - sorry to hear of the nearby bomb reigniting childhood fears. I personally would be concerned at such stuff happening in any place I lived and would be keen to move somewhere safer.

I myself was born in Belfast to a Northern Ireland family (mum from Tyrone, dad from Belfast) and we moved down to Dublin in 1976 when I was less than 1 year of age to escape the violence tearing the province apart at the time. I well remember the security/army checks/patrols etc. as a child visiting all my relatives up North.

In fact, between 1971 and 1981 when the Troubles were at their height the North lost almost 100K people as they fled the violence and many moved South at that time.

    Take it easy today Witchie.

Thank you guys, am feeling much better now.

Got my purple back in my hair after a few months of disasters and have a fringe again. 😁

    Am easily made happy!

@JupiterKid my mum is also from Tyrone but my dad is from Monaghan. They lived in Lisnaskea when my older brother was born but moved south just before I was born in '73.

@smurfjed I have never been to Bangkok! Hope to go for New years. But most people who know me and have been to both think that KL is best for me as its a little less hectic.

The infamous Patpong night market is closed these days.

This used to be full of market stalls selling every type of fake product imaginable with bars and restaurant along the side. The ping pong shows still exist but now they look rather seedy.

On the other hand, the LGBT scene is no longer hidden and appears to be extremely vibrant.

Heading to get the hair done, going to chop the lot I think. The antibiotics have me absolutely wiped, absolutely no alcohol allowed with them and I don't miss it one bit tbh, work, couch, leaba is all I'm able for atm.

Was offered 2 free tickets for Elton John last night, turned both down as I saw him a few years ago and it wasn't great, kicking myself now as last night was brilliant according to my friends, did the same with a ticket for Pet Shop Boys and seemingly that was a great night also. Have a ticket for Westlife going with a gang, not a fan and was going to sell it but not I'm not sure, decisions.
