Tax payers in all countries subsidize things. You're not gonna avail of every services that tax money goes towards. Eg you may never or rarely go to a hospital, that doesn't mean you should get a rebate by virtue of not using one..

Also plenty of degrees are never going to lead to highly profitable jobs. So being saddled with debt is gonna make it a lot more difficult to survive. I'm pretty sure you will likely respond with why qualify in something that pays poorly.... So then no nurses, teachers etc.

They know they took the loan. The devil is in where the loan company applies the payment money.

No. Equal opportunity is desired, not equal reward.

Society benefits massively from free third level education, mainly it helps reduce inter generational poverty.

Because US Uni's can make money from them. This is why there's a massive oversupply of PhD's; it's not like there are openings in academia for them, so such grads are used in non-tenured 'adjunct' positions while full timed tenured faculty earn the big $$ and put in the minimal work.

For another, the loan system is indeed predatory, but it goes hand in hand with absurd tuitions and housing. For example, one Uni I'm familiar with has a campus not far from here in Ireland where they send students for whatever reasons (probably 'a year abroad.') This Universities tuition is higher than Harvard's, yet, it doesn't rank in the top 100 Unis in the US. And it only offers 'liberal arts' degrees like languages, sociology, ....

Further, the admins at these Unis rake in scary salaries - the one I graduated from (in 1984, on scholarship so it only cost a couple thousand/year) was exposed as paying it's President something like $900k/year. For administrative duties. For a smallish Uni. Just nuts. (now, the President wasn't earning that kind of money when the likes of me were attending. That salary was revealed a few years ago.)

If you want free tuition at Unis (and what about overpriced books? And housing/room&board?) you should at a minimum have to pass competitive exams for your placement. There's a Uni for you if you have a pulse in the US - people with Downs attend some. And the salaries and benefits for all University employees should be investigated.

I won't even get into the absolute scam that is tenure, and 'online learning,' and wretched 'for profit ' diploma mills. But, those issues help drive the costs up as well.

Exactly - Equally of opportunity is what is essential.

No one should have to decide to not educate themselves or not look after their health because they can't afford it. Both should be free or very close to it.

Also, if people are educated and kept healthy they likely pay more taxes for a longer time so it pays for itself over time

The US like it does for most things just tears the arse out of both of these by charging absolutely outrageous unjustified amounts.

No one should have to decide to not educate themselves or not look after their health because they can't afford it. Both should be free or very close to it.

There was a time when both sides of the political divide understood that a healthy and educated population was a strong population. Which therefore benefited the nation. But somewhere along the line, around the 80's, the right wing became parties of "fuck you". If you cannot afford healthcare, fuck you. If you cannot afford an education, fuck you.

Generally, if you fall upon hard times, fuck you.

What's absurd about the American right, however, is that there are so many poor people that vote against their interests for the party of fuck you who, literally, offer them nothing and will continually syphon wealth upwards. People who live in abject poverty voting for the likes of Donald Trump, who gave billionaires tax breaks on their private jets. And there's plenty still who'll tip him their vote again.

Mind you, the Democrats aren't that much better in the grand scheme of things, which just illustrates how terminally broken the whole system is over there. The entire thing needs gutting really.

Ireland isn't comparable to the the US. People end up with 100k plus debt for the undergrad. Even trying to gouge Americans who come here for college it has still worked out cheaper for them to go to college here than stay at home in some instances.

It seems ridiculous to either limit the options someone can take in the future or cripple them financially as they are starting out in life.

High profile incident in NYC Subway this morning:

“there are currently no known explosive devices on the subway trains, and this is not being investigated as an act of terrorism at this time.”

Somehow earlier in the day there was misinformation about IEDs being present. POTUS briefed through official channels per, WH.

Meanwhile, WH says very true thing in a very polarizing manner

Indeed delivery drivers and shop assistants should be saddled with someone elses debt for an education that they didnt recieve

How else will we keep up with the demnad for Gender Studies Majors?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 86,683 ✭✭✭✭Overheal

They wouldn't be saddled with the debt, the debt would be erased, and the federal budget wouldn't have to change in response to that? There haven't been loan repayments in over a year anyway, so they aren't a source of federal income, and the budget still managed to reduce the deficit...

How are they saddled with debt? Are you in debt because college is almost free in Ireland

Biden's approval rating now consistently in the 30s. It's hard to believe anyone approves of his economic performance.

It isn’t consistently in the 30s. It’s been hovering around 41% for months.

Because zelensky thinks he's a proper leader, job growth is through the roof, the deficit is being reduced at an exponential rate and the US is respected once more around the world.

Of course you pay attention to Joe Rogan, rather than the many many other times this has been mentioned previously

Because this story has been reported for many many weeks, however if you use Joe Rogan for your politics or vaccine information, that information stream is extremely skewed. He has no journalistic integrity whatsoever, and before you say 'well he's reporting it now'; even a stopped clock tells the right time twice a day

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,260 ✭✭✭✭everlast75

even the article is skewed. In the wording of the article, it says he mentions other politicians. But, because of the twitter account/publisher, who gets the picture beside Mr. Rogan? A particular person people who its subscribers loves to hate.

nobody get's advice from joe rogan, he has a podcast that has some great guests particularly in the comedy/mma/music world and it can be fun , why the hell would you even bother raising this ? it's like the old guardian reader snobbery of old

i love you how use the term "before you say" ha i didn't see that til after i posted and it looks like "i didn't say"

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,019 ✭✭✭✭duploelabs

Asie from this having nothing to do with Biden, have you analysed what rigorous double-sourced information gathering he does before making a statement? For example, do you think it's responsible of him (given his vast audience) to advocate the use of ivermectin as an effective cure against covid infection, when there is no scientific study to base this on?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,259 ✭✭✭✭Ash.J.Williams

as far as most people are concerned he is a podcast not a source of information. I don't even rate him as a comedian. Have i comment on his ivermectin use? yea don't take medical advice from UFC MC's.

excuse me now as i " analyse what rigorous double-sourced information gathering " dustin the turkey does before he opens his beak

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,019 ✭✭✭✭duploelabs

So given his ineptitude of information on that subject, do you think he should be a trusted source for anything? He's even ridiculed by the MMA community, and that's meant to be his core topic

And dustin the turkey doesn't have a vast audience not do they comment on covid treatment

There really needs to be age limits brought in or term limits.

You have Biden and Pelosi with a combined age of 161. Imagine Michael D being our Taoiseach at this stage.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,260 ✭✭✭✭everlast75

"as far as most people are concerned" - most?

Say you are right and that most realise what his podcast is all about.

Even if it is just 10% who don't, 10% of his substantial amount of followers is still a sh1tload of people. Whilst it would appear you can apply critical thinking, even 10% of his followers not doing so and they take his "advice" on medicine - this poses a significant issue. Whether you give a sh1t or not about those people, the fact is it is dangerous.

The point, whether he or you like it or not, is he wields significant influence and isn't very careful about how he may influence people.

he's not a trusted source in the same way ryan tubridy isn't a trusted source, why would i look to joe rogan for anything other than entertainment which we all have a right to do without 21 century mary whitehouses interfering

If i took tubridy seriously i'd think the most important aspect of the war on ukraine is pronouncing chicken kiev wrong. Read peer reviewed articles if it's info you seek
