Yeah, it was Australia - Malaysia - Brazil - then into the European races. With Japan at the end. 🙂

The Merc engine cars are so slow. Is it the new fuel causing this issue? I'm wondering if the power output is way less, and Ferrari and Honda/RBPT have it sorted, with Alpine near them?

Not sure if it is the ICE yet, but the Merc powered teams are generally suffering overall, so it would be hard placed to just put it down to one aspect. Chances are, it is a mixture of things.

Having said that, the speed traps (again, not a true indicator of power overall, aero and drag and grip play a factor) all paint a fairly grim picture.

Rumours say it is the fuel, no confirmation though

Kravitz on the notebook spent several minutes talking about the Piercings and Pants thing. Says its clearly the FIA targeting Lewis Hamilton. They really are insufferable fools on Sky

I didn’t see that clip but I saw someone else point the rule and shock horror on twitter it went completely out of control and it was the FIA targeting Lewis Hamilton, and there was race involved which is just **** ludicrous. When it was pointed out that the rule has been there prior to Hamilton debuting in F1, it was funny to see their brains not be able to cope with that.

Yeah like, he's the most obvious one who breaks thst rule (he has earrings in post race interviews so I presume he wears them racing). But the rules are in place up and down FIA racing. It's not just a special rule for Hamilton.

Ah, its Sky Sports remit to create a siege mentality for its viewers. Plucky little Brits against the big bad world. Battling all the odds and coming out on top.

Mercedes and Lewis will be demanding a new race director again.

Disgrace that they brought in that rule in 2005 fully knowing it would be used to maximum effect 17 years later to get a Hamilton. It was never about Liuzzi it was about Hamilton.

Leclerc now has a massive 46 point gap over Verstappen. The Ferrari also looks bullet proof so far. Worrying times for Red Bull and there power train. Mercedes could finish second in both championships the way it going.

McLaren have made great progress since the first race but Norris is still sounding down beat and putting it down to car being track specific. They did seem to be down on top speed and could not close in on the Mercedes even with DRS.

Is it time now for Binotto to have the awkward chat with Carlos Sainz?

    This too shall pass.

I don't think so. He isn't as fast as Charles but he's a lot of bad luck, plus one mistake today that cost him dearly.

Apparently they replaced his steering just before the race but it was still faulty and he had an issue with anti stall on the start? I've no idea what that is but he talks about it in the post race interview. So it may not be his fault at all.

In theory anti-stall should kick in when revs drop and there's a risk of cutting out. Was a good bit more flaky back in the day but can still cause issues today. How much was an issue or unexpectedly awful traction may have triggered an issue with it I have no idea.

But yeah, Sainz is the body through which all misfortune is running for Ferrari this season.

I think it's been pretty clear which one is faster in each quali and race so far. Only one Ferrari driver can compete with, and beat, max. So it might be a bit early to sit him down for the awkward conversation, but another couple of races along the same vein and it will be unavoidable.

I was surprised that the porpoising didn't cause more issues for the Ferrari. They seemed by far the worst for it this morning but the drivers, and the car, seemed well able for it.

Far too early to call anything but LeClerc is doing a great job so far. Anytime Max got close he pulled away, and pretty easily I'd say. RB really need to sort the reliability, Merc will only get better IMO.

Alpine back in blue looks much better. They also look like they could be competitive in a few races if they can put it all together correctly over a weekend.

Was getting excited for Alonso but it just didn't work out for him. Same old story really...

Was wrong call to go on medium. If he did like Albon he could have been nicely in the points. Magnussen also failed with this tactic.

It's not looking good for the WDC battle is it?

If Max had finished P2 twice or even once it would be all to play for but 46 points is huge. Especially considering how unreliable RB is and it's also slower.

They need to fix those reliability issues asap and find a way to make that car lighter.

Mercedes are nowhere. Cruising around in P5 and 6 waiting on someone to fail or a lucky safety car.

If things don't change quickly, Charles will be out of touch very soon.

This is F1 anything can go right/wrong, its early days yet.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,158 ✭✭✭This is it

This is Ferrari, they'll definitely mess something up.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,262 ✭✭✭✭Frank Bullitt

For the longest F1 season in history, it’s still too early to call this one but Leclerc is in charge of this one. Horner made some reference to preferring making a fast car reliable over a slow car fast…not sure I agree with that one, but the RB is still the closest in performance to Ferrari.

Rumour that RB have a 7kg weight cut coming for the next race, it’s meant to be very overweight which would penalise performance. Of course it does sod all for the reliability part.

If the standings were like this at the half way point, I’d be calling it a day, but there is still so long left.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,152 ✭✭✭✭El_Duderino 09

7kg is a huge leap. I suppose a 7kg cut means lots of parts of the car do less work over the course of the weekend. Brakes and suspension, for example, do less. But maybe it means they can adjust other parameters so they running more efficiently.

Have they said what the problem was with Max's car yesterday?

I think there's too much wrong with this Red Bull to get involved in the title fights.

The car is massively overweight, unreliable, burning through tyres and looks pedestrian in slow corners.

An upgrade won't magically fix all that I don't think.

Merc are 1 second off so I don't see them challenging this season.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,152 ✭✭✭✭El_Duderino 09

You're likely right but Alpine had a 4kg loss amongst its updates this weekend and they had a big jump in performance. 7kg would presumably be a decent improvement and help with tyre wear.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25,379 ✭✭✭✭pjohnson

Yeah 7kg reduction would be a massive help re. Tyre degredation.

Much as I hate to say it's Mercedes will very quickly get back near the front.

They will solve the bouncing and start running the car as they need to and the performance will be there.

I often wonder how is restricted testing policed. Mercedes say they need actual running to figure out the floor and the ground effect issues.

Surely If a team wished, they could run some kind of mule at some random racetrack to try to evaluate aspects of floor design.

Auditors keeping a close eye on cost caps. Running a mule would still be costly.

As much as this isn't the heights we're used to from Mercedes-Benz this isn't turning out to be the season from hell that many believe Merc deserve.

    This too shall pass.
