Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

1kg of Forsa Gala whole beans from Coffee Angel is 33.15 delivered to us in Dublin.

Can anyone suggest any alternatives around that price point i.e 30-35 euro delivered.

Previously I have tried Ponaire, Mahers etc etc but of late what I'm finding is that when I go to order the pricing seems to have more closer to the 40 euro mark or above in many cases.

    Anyone have any suggestions?

I'm not that interested in ordering from abroad, BTW. Mainly interested in Irish businesses, beans roasted in Ireland or Northern Ireland.

Have a look at Macabes in Wicklow €24 a kilo € 5 delivery. I used them a few times great roast dates and decent coffee

That Forsa Gala is good stuff. The last thing you want is a full kilo of bad coffee to torment you for a month or two (or more)

If it's espresso you're after, I haven't found nicer than Artessa Fusion blend. It was recommended on this thread and I find it very consistent and easy to dial in. I usually buy 2kg at a time and it gets delivered to Dublin for €60.50 all in.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,613 ✭✭✭caviardreams

Would you commit for 6 months? Wcc have a 6 month singe origin sub for €204 including delivery - €34 per month essentially. Always excellent bean and you would get a new coffee every month to try.

Cloudpicker SAM blend is 31.50 delivered, decent espresso blend. Some have difficulty dialling it in for whatever reason but I've always found it fine.

Has anybody used www.kaffekapslen.ie ? Very decent prices and shipping seems reasonable

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,005 ✭✭✭hold my beer

Those prices can't be right are they. 4.99 for a kilo of beans.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,603 ✭✭✭alec76

They are garbage though. They charging €5 to get rid off 1kg of bin material. Smart business if you ask me.

Ah right. I was wondering how they could possibly sell at those prices.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,944 ✭✭✭✭scudzilla

Yeah, seem cheap. I ordered 1kg of lavazza Caffè creme gustoso beans and 2 boxed of dolce pods (flavoured shite, wife loves them)

€19 which includes DHL delivery, let's see how it goes

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,944 ✭✭✭✭scudzilla

Box arrived this morning, really cant fault 1kg of Lavazza gustoso for a tenner

Dolce gusto pods for here were 1xpistachio latte and 1 x tiramisu latte, tried one of each and not bad with a shot added

Nice idea from Soma - a little pricey but to be expected really

    6 60g samples in a tasting set

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 899 ✭✭✭DrZeuss

    Nice idea but wow that's pricey. 360g for €24.95 + €4.95 p&p 😮

I've not tried Soma coffee, are they actually worth that price?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,613 ✭✭✭caviardreams

You are really paying for the individual aspect and it's more of a "gift" purchase I would have thought - their 250g bags are around €12 a go, so I guess it's €25 vs €18 for the same weight in "normal" bags.

Some coffee is nice - but I wouldn't put it above west cork coffee from what I have tried.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 899 ✭✭✭DrZeuss

Ah yes, it was yourself that recommended WCC a while back. Consistently good coffee there for sure, I see they have another Guatemala there so time to replenish!

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,005 ✭✭✭hold my beer

I've ordered from Artessa last couple of times. Might try WCC again. Do they still not use re-sealable bags?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,613 ✭✭✭caviardreams

Just this month I got my 1kg sub bag in a resealable bag from WCC - woohoo!

Any recommendations for a nice coffee to make flat white and latte. I've got a Bambino plus and sage grinder, I've been using Cloudpicker Sam but I find while it's a nice espresso there's not that much flavour when made into a milk drink. Any advice or favourites people recommend on here?

I enjoy Artessa Fusion Blend for my milky coffees these days

Just bought a bean to cup (Philips 2200) and looking for some nice beans to put in it, particularly for making milky coffees.

Any recommendations? I've read you want medium roasted beans for bean to cup machines.

Living in Dublin so would rather collect from a shop than order online.

Big fan of roasted brown coffee, but don't mind trying something else.

    Beans from Nicks Coffee Ranelagh

Philips bean to cup and milky coffees?

Dark roast would work better for you.

or I say , nothing but dark roast would work at all.

Philips known for tiny brewing unit , only could take up to 8g coffee AFAIK. ( 14g for Delonghi, 18g Melita or Jura)

  • Registered Users Posts: 170 ✭✭bleaks

Cheers, but don't dark roasts' bean oils clog up the grinder?

Yeah, finding I'm only getting okay results from the shortest espressos... no point going near the longer 'coffee' setting.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,603 ✭✭✭alec76

Cheers, but don't dark roasts' bean oils clog up the grinder?

What choice do you have ?

Did you buy it at Amazon with 30 days free return? I would replace it with Delonghi or Melita ( maybe less reliable than Delonghi, but coffee taste much better.)

ps.with Darker roast you set grinder to the coarse settings and going up to fine with medium.

( every bean to cup works this way AFAIK)

  • Registered Users Posts: 170 ✭✭bleaks

Got the Philips pretty much half price from the amazon warehouse for 200.

It's fine, not expecting amazing coffees out of it, but wanted to move away from the ecological nightmare that we all know, nespresso pods.

I'm actually getting okay results from the Velo beans (Brazil Andreia - purple packet) this morning. 5.99 for 200g in Aldi - always get the one with the longest BBE you can find.

Drinking Blakes Always Organic Culture Blend using an Aeropress. Very nice but I am only comparing it to supermarket coffee.

    5.30 for 250g

    20 for 1kg

    14 delivery

    They also sell kefir.

Are Badger and Dodo a good place to start exploring for V60 ? I see a 2021 thread on their subscription but didn't want to resurrect it.

Thanks in advance for any advice- I'm a total novice here but excited to start learning about what coffees I like.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,224 ✭✭✭Hodors Appletart

Yeah B&D do great coffee - how versed are you in beans? The different processing methods? Washed, Natural etc

My advice would be to start with their Fairy Floss blend, which is a blend of Washed and Natural Ethiopian beans - it's normally a great coffee. Then have a look at their single origin. Work your way through the different offerings, compare a Washed Ethiopian to a Natural, compare South American v African beans, compare the growing elevations.

I’m a total novice without a plan- but thanks to you I have one now- many thanks I’ll let you know how I get on

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,224 ✭✭✭Hodors Appletart

Nice one. I'll tell you how my journey went.

When I got into proper coffee I hadn't a clue what I was doing, so I asked someone to get me a year long subscription for my birthday. Each month two new bags of beans would arrive from a roaster, along with tasting notes, description of the processing method, details of where the coffee was grown and things like that.

I liked it so much, I renewed for a second year - after that I felt I knew enough about what I liked or didn't like, how to interpret the information presented on the different roasters websites, I was confident enough to start ordering for myself, based on what I like instead of relying on the roaster to choose for me, and also if I spot something that looks a bit different or something I haven't tried before I might get that along with something I know I'll like.

It's a great hobby, and my other advice would be to get used to drinking something other than coffee in other people's houses if they aren't "proper" coffee drinkers like you are about to become. Does that sound snobby? Yeah it does, but you are definitely about to become a coffee snob, so embrace it early. That also applies to coffee shops and cafes by the way.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,848 ✭✭✭Oscar_Madison

Ha ha - funny you mention coffee snob- I was reading up on how Brazilian coffee is not rated as high amongst coffee enthusiasts compared to some African and Central American coffees - that’s why I steered away from Brazil on the B&D website but of course, I wouldn’t know the difference anyway 😀 I’ll probably buy that coffee at some stage as they’re a reputable site but thought I’d stick with African for the moment

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,224 ✭✭✭Hodors Appletart

Lovely stuff, I've found that Brazilian coffee isn't for me really, but I do go back to it if I see a Natural, or Honey Process or something like that. Brazilian and Columbian coffees, especially Washed ones, are maligned (I think) because they offer the more traditional coffee flavour profile, they aren't really "exciting" enough, if that makes sense.

I love East African coffees, Ethiopia, Rwanda, Burundi, Uganda, Kenya all produce amazing coffees, I really especially love the natural process ones. Loads of weird and wonderful flavour profiles there.

Recently I've been enjoying Central and South American honey process coffees, they are a bit more expensive so not every month, but the odd time they are worth checking out.

I have a Sage Bambino Plus, Sage smart grinder pro and Timemore black mirror scales. I am new to home espressos and want to start dialling in. Can anyone recommend a good bean to work with for a beginner. I drink both espresso and Americano. I also want to make a good cappuccino for when we have visitors!

Also is it true that I can only use dark roasts for that machine?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,603 ✭✭✭alec76

Here you go , very good blend for beginner

Buy 1kg bags , keep them in the freezer.

It is creamy, simple, every day bean , medium roast .

Stay away from complex ( floral/fruit) beans for now , until learn something.

Don't bother with milk until you could pull few decent espresso in a row.

  • Registered Users Posts: 17 shinywhiny

I got the coffee house lane coffee but was very disappointed when it arrived. It had no roast date on it so I contacted them. They said the batch number was the roast date so roasted on the 10th of Feb. That's a long way off march 24th. This is not speciality coffee just premium coffee. With postage included McCabe's was much better value. Back to McCabe's I think.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,005 ✭✭✭hold my beer

Prices in Ponaire have jumped significantly. Paying an extra 20 quid for 3KGs.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,224 ✭✭✭Hodors Appletart

anyone know how long WCC generally take to deliver, I made an order on Monday and it's still showing as "pending fulfillment" when I check on it.

Other roasters are usually a bit quicker.

I ordered from them on Sunday. It was delivered yesterday.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,613 ✭✭✭caviardreams

Thats unusual - normally I would find it shipped the next day. Only thing I can think of is they are waiting an extra day or two to do a fresh roast

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,224 ✭✭✭Hodors Appletart

yeah I contacted them, and they said they were waiting for some green beans to arrive.

Fair enough, but they offered me a full refund, which I wasn't looking for - I just asked them to continue with the order, and they said they'd throw in an extra bag. Half an hour later, I got confirmation it's shipped, they use GLS so I wonder if it will arrive tomorrow.

Thing is, I'm running low on my supply at the moment, so I'll have to go and buy some in the local coffee shop and freeze whatever arrives from WCC.

  • Registered Users Posts: 260 ✭✭Tabby McTat

I find WCC are usually next day delivery, to Dublin at least. I generally order in the morning and have my beans my lunchtime the next day.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 899 ✭✭✭DrZeuss

Wow, I must be doing something wrong but my best WCC order was 5 days and worst was 6 days confirmation to delivery. But....they are always as fresh as can be so I don't mind in the slightest.

I do also normally order a selection too so that in itself could slow the process if they are possibly roasting to order.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,913 ✭✭✭Pintman Paddy Losty

Does anyone have a recommendation for good freshly roasted beans that *don't* result in an immediate opening of the C-130 hatch and the squad of brown oompah loompahs skydiving to the porcelain sea?

Have tried lots but haven't found one yet.

Any good discount codes going this weekend?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,823 ✭✭✭ballyharpat

Check the other coffee thread-some codes over there, I'm going for some Artessa Kenyan blend, they have 20% off,

My last two purchases were from Dreambeans, I bought Torero-very tasty-

I really liked Tiger paw though, very light but fullbodied and tastes fruity. The kind that makes me want more-unfortunately I drink too much of it then though :)
