Agreed. However, imagine if we was Joe Public and there was a similar scene in a local restaurant or pub. That person would be investigated by the Gardaí and lose their job. The mob on Twitter would see to that

I dunno, he I recall he slapped a reporter on a red carpet before.

Also, his marriage set-up with Jada Pinkett Smith is *ahem* unconventional, and it looks very much like she strongarmed him into it.

The interview where they dragged their "arrangement" in front of TV cameras was beyond weird, and Will Smith looked pretty broken in it.

For a black Hollywood power couple, they sure do like engaging in white people sh*t.

If you insult someone’s wife (and it was a very cheap shot) you are liable to get a slap.

    well done will smith

of course initial reaction is critical of Smith.

no one is going to want to say he was justified, etc.

There will be PR spin and it will all blow over. No studio is is going to close a door to Will Smith.

I doubt very much that people are going to be in a cinema and think “I won’t go see that Will Smith film because he slapped “what his name” at the Oscars”

Smith most likely woke up this morning mortified. Chris Rock most likely woke up humiliated.

That will be as bad as it gets.

Yeah... but cheating on her husband, with multiple toyboys, was probably more embarassing.

The hosts this year were abominable. Sykes is a better comedian than Regina Hall, and most definitely than Schumer.

I know they probably won't ask Chris Rock to host it. Probably won't ask Ellen Degeneres either.

Also have to ask-where was security? A few comedians spoke about doing standup in small clubs where heckler's tried to attack them, and were thrown to the ground by security guards. These are at clubs paying maybe 20 bucks for one 15 minute gig (comped on free drinks).

The Oscar's can't afford security? Maybe that's because they spent it all on Swarovski crystals.

100% correct, like Ellen who's mantra "be kind" fell flat when she was anything but to her staff. He was laughing along then got the daggers 🗡, oh I better do something.

    No class, just a tramp.

You think one man slapping another is “unhinged” and “disturbing”?

what magical land are you living in that a guy losing his temper and doing something stupid makes him mentally unwell ?

Never seen alopecia compared to cancer so many times before. Maybe us balding men will now have justification for smacking anyone who cracks a joke at us? 😂

A little off topic, but was there much proselytising last night at the awards?

I hope that they will be donating their 140k goodie bags to said causes

Ryan Tubridy would be the perfect fit.....unfortunately they couldnt afford him.....

Did he slap the other lad?

    No he had Smith's "blessing"

    Apparently

    They were "on a break"

From the footage it really looks like a very bizarre delayed reaction or else the wife told him to do something.

i think the reactions to the incident being posted here are more over the top than what Smith did

Abuse is abuse be it physical or mental.

The "it's only a joke" line is trotted out by abusers and bullies all over knowing that they are free to demean, insult, and attack people mentally but safe from retaliation.

For those saying "just use words back" against a professional comedian used to heckles? Like people saying just hit back Vs Mayweather's abuse.

Everyone was an asshole, in this situation, but it's annoying when people dismiss verbal abuse

I would have the same opinion on Joe Public as I do on Will Smith.

Cops were involved. Rock didn’t want to press charges.

A person should not lose their job over one incident.

The “mob on Twitter” should be put in a rocket and fired into the Sun.

I don’t know anything about their personal life but from your post you seem to describe Smith as henpecked and not an “angry person”

If Smith hadn’t done what he did then I reckon this morning we’d be talking about how he laughed his arse off and did nothing while Rock deeply offended his wife. In other words his divorce proceedings and cancellation would be well under way.

What I really want now is video of the 2-3 seconds in which he looked over at Jada saw her face and stopped laughing before heading for the stage.

Some professionalism from Rock to finish the segment.

Not the first time Smyths wife as made a complete clown out of him.

She admitted for ratings to having far worse things come out of her mouth.

That is a very good point.

Because Chris Rock is not funny I didn’t give much thought to fact that what he said was abusive. And at these awards the “jokes” are often personal.

Snd it is bullying because the target can do nothing. They have to sit there and take it.

No thought is ever given to how a person might feel listening to these comments because the people are famous.

And yet just a few days ago when I saw someone in work be mean to a colleague (a quiet shy person ) I did something about it

There’s a big thing in America going since the 60s at least called the celebrity roast- plenty of examples online with the rat pack, John Wayne even Ronald Regan- essentially it’s all about saying the worst thing you can think of about said celebrity only the celebrity signs up for this roast and goes along with it.

The fact that the comment was about his wife not himself, and that it was in pretty poor taste and the fact that Chris Rock has a history of making jokes about Will Smiths wife, all together made for quite an unfunny scene.

Will though should have held it together - we’re long last the glory days of the Oscar’s- back in the day when doctors lawyers dentists and celebrity actors/musicians and despots were the only real rich people in the world, the Oscar’s gave us ordinary peasants a chance to share in this “magical” world - magazines like OK and Hello sold in their millions - but that’s all gone now- the “greats” are all dead or about to die and we’re left with this bunch of nobodies- I think we’ve just witnessed the Oscars implosion up it’s own arse and I for one am delighted

    Hey Everybody,

I'm an armchair psychologist so you know I know what I'm talking about.

He is a crazy totally angry unhinged weirdo person because I once saw him on a talk show trying to act funnier than he really is and read on the internet stuff that would make your eyes bulge out of their sockets.

So, when I say something, you know it's true, because I am a real person typing real stuff and just because I won't divulge my real identity, that doesn't mean I am not being completely 100% honest.

haha. The real crazies are the people claiming they know the guy when they never met him, and the only time they have seen him is when he is playing a character on talk shows or interviews (yes, because once the camera is on, behaviour changes)

Seriously, enough with the faux outrage.

He went on stage at the Oscars ceremony, live on TV, and physically assaulted the host and shouted obscenities over a pretty mild joke.

To act like it's no big deal or anything other than insanely over the top is bizarre.

Rock handled it well and is coming out of it pretty good. Smith looked like an absolute clown.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,970 ✭✭✭✭ohnonotgmail

The police did investigate but Rock didn't want to press charges.

I agree, that he should have held it together. Violence is not justified.

However, it is a medical condition. Imagine if somebody mocked a person’s tremor or scars? It would go down badly. Certain things are poor taste. Rock’s comments were poor taste.

Do you remember those horrific comments by Frankie Boyle about Jade Goody’s cervical cancer? It was in his tour “The Last Days of Soddom”. I couldn’t watch him again after this. Certain comments are warranted. But attacking somebody’s health ailments is cruel.

But just to reiterate, I do not condone violence. Smith was a fool
