Very well run. You came very strong at the end.

It looks like that group of runners at mile 9 was same group I pulled away from a mile earlier.

Great running D. I know probably a bit gutted to be so close to the 60 but at the end of the day it’s an arbitrary round number and nothing more, 60.02 is just as impressive as 59.59. Great race all around man.

Cheers and I'm not too bothered missing out on it this time. Happy with how it went in general.

I have been a bit lazy on the updating the log front but I still want to document my training for myself to read back on, so Ill give a brief update.

3 weeks down of 12 for Limerick marathon training. I had previously built back up a decent base since xmas, prior to starting this hybrid training plan.

Week 1 - 51 miles including a 16 mile long run and a midweek session

Week 2 - 51 Miles including a 17 mile run, a midweek session and an extremely mucky/heavy race effort at Rás na Heireann XC

Week 3 - 57 Miles including an 18 mile run, a midweek session and a speed session over the weekend.

I have a plan drawn out with the option to alter some of the midweek sessions. Tuesdays is when the club do their session but at the minute I cant make that time slot so tend to do them early morning. They tend to be good sessions so I'm subbing some of them in and out where I feel it will benefit me.

The midweek sessions tend to be reps and turnover stuff at 5k- 10k pace so far. My long runs are consisting of either patches of MP or Steady or even both. I have lifted quite a few of these from when Luke was helping me back in 2020 with a marathon plan. I found them very beneficial especially when running on tired legs later on in them. The rest of the volume is made up of easy running. I will be keeping to the 50-60 mile range. I have included Bohermeen half in this plan but I haven't decided if ill race this or do it at MP yet. My sister in laws 40th will be the night before so I'll imagine I will have a few pints so I'll see how I feel on the morning, I suppose.

I also have an entry in the Great Ireland Run 10km as its a club target. Its a tad close to the Marathon but I really enjoy racing and from previous experience, I think it suits me to race more often than not. This week consists of another 18 mile run but I will more then likely make it a 19 mile run as I'm conscious to get as many quality longer runs as possible after the Galway debacle. My other target for the next couple of weeks is improve the diet and hopefully naturally shed a couple of KG's as I am a bit off race weight at the minute. I've an awful sweet tooth aswell as a hankering for the few pints. All can be still done, but in more meaningful moderation me thinks.😜

    Monday 28th Feb - 7 miles@7.53

Lunchtime run around Marlay Park - Nothing exciting here

    Tuesday 1st March - 9 miles @6.53

Early start to Spring for me. I was out the door by 6am for a session before work. Despite, noticing frost on the car as I left the house, I wasnt going back upstairs and risking the wrath of waking little ones to get into any extra layers. So, out I went in the shorts and T shirt minus gloves and hat. I reduced a 2 mile warmup to 1 so I could try and warm up quicker. I then completed 1 mile at 5.55 mins pace followed by 2 off minutes. The session then was 20 x 1 minutes off 1 minute at approx 5k pace. I tired a little in the middle where one rep slipped to just shy of 6 min pace on an uphill drag but on average they were about 5.35 pace with the last one at 5.13. I was happy with the mornings work. Towards the end of the 17th or 18th rep , my hands were beginning to feel the bite from the cold. Again, I cut the cool down to 1 mile to get home to warm up the hands. It must have taken a good 20 minutes to get the circulation back in the hands after this one - horrible feeling that last I experienced when I was caught in a snow storm on the bike.

    Wednesday approx 9.3 miles @ 8.15

I got out early again for an easy 10k in the morn. Lesson learned from yesterday. I had the underarmer gloves and hat back on here but sure I realised after 10 minutes it probably wasn't needed as was a far milder morning. I haven't played the weekly football on the Astro since starting marathon training and even a bit before that I reckon. I have left myself in the whats app group though and realised they were short a body so stood in late to save the day 🙄. I ended up doing a 1.5 mile warmup and cooldown with the football sandwiched in between. I was a bit rusty on the football front. My first touch was so bad, my 2nd touch was often a tackle. I scored a spectacular OG at one stage. The ball was rifled off the cross bar and rebounded off my ear from close range and into the goal.. The whistling in the ear lasted a further 5 minutes. We lost by one - They might be removing me from that whatsapp group now😀

    Thursday 6.67 Miles @8.38

An evening group run with the club which finished up with 8 x 80 metres hard strides. The legs and whole body were still feeling a little heavy/stiff from the previous day so held back a little on the strides until the last 2 where I let loose.

    Friday 19 Miles @7.14

I'm not working Fridays at present and I am most Saturdays so for the last few weeks have been doing the long runs after the kids drop off. The muscles in the legs were all tired before I set off for this and wasn't really looking forward to my longest run in nearly 6 months. Even after 10 minutes I was feeling laboured. It was a 4,3,2,1 mile job off 1 mile sandwiched in between 3 easier miles on each end. I have been conscious off late to just run a route and do the hard miles even by effort if they turn out to be uphill etc. Due to how the body felt, I didn't fancy doing 4 harder uphill miles to start with though. My 3 initial miles brought me up to Fernhill track when I did the first 4 MP miles there. I think it was a good call on the day as the legs started to get a bit of life in them on the 2nd MP mile there. I then had the confidence to continue with my original undulating route for the remainder for the run where I just ran the required MP miles on whatever terrain I was on. All in all, I was happy to have completed this one especially when I was feeling weak initially. Later on in that day, we brought the kids to the circus which was good craic actually until the youngest got sick in the car on the way back. What resulted for the next 24 hours wasn't pretty with 3 out of the four of us having a ghastly stomach bug that stopped us in our tracks. Saturday was a write off. My wife got off scot free.. Its usually me that gets away not getting these bugs but the immune system may have been weaker this week due to tiredness.

    Sunday 9 miles@9.00

I had got my appetite back on Saturday night and ate all around me. I woke up on Sunday and felt 100 times better so got myself up to the causal paced Sunday Club run. I had planned to run for 45 minutes but ended up doing a fair bit longer as was enjoying the social run in the sunny morning.

    4/12 weeks done - 60 mile week.

It will be a bit of less volume week as had planned to race Bohermeen the coming weekend. I'm currently undecided on that and might yet swap it out for a vanilla longer run.

As weeks go in marathon training, the one that just passed was pretty poor.

    Monday - 8 Miles@8.11

Lunchtime Loop around ballinteer and Marlay

    Tuesday -9 miles @6.57

Decent enough session this one-Got out early morning in the wind and rain- 2 easy miles to begin with followed by 2 miles at approx 6 min mile pace. The 2nd one of these had a bit of a downhill profile but was right into the wind so I had to work there before 2 off minutes. This was followed by 90 secs on/off by 7 times. I did that part on the 1km concert field lap in marlay follwed by 1.5 mile cooldown.

    Wednesday - 6.21 Miles @8.26

Early morning effort before it rained. I didn't avoid getting wet though as I was cycling into the office after and got wet on both the way in and on the return 🙄

    Thursday - 6.76 Miles @8.38

Nice Club run here which finsihed with 10 x 100 metres strides at pace.

    Friday- 6.21 Miles @7.49

This was the shakeout with a few strides before the Half on Sunday- The run itself felt good and led me to think there should be a PB on the Sunday if the weather plays Ball. I had a target time in my head.

I went out to a 40th on Saturday night. I had a bit of craic but I was reasonably disciplined and only had the few pints and was getting in plenty of water too. I woke up in the middle of night due to a nature call but somehow missed where I was in the dark and stubbed my baby toe pretty bad off an exercise bike I have in the room. I let out a roar and frightened the bajayus out of the other half. I did a right number on the toe and the nail had shattered and it was throbbing immediately. I finally manged to get back asleep but when I woke up in the morning the toe was black and blue and still throbbing. I got into all the running gear to see how i was fixed but as soon as I put footwear on, it was pressing up against the toe. It was far too sore to contemplate it then. Bad timing indeed. I was hoping it would feel a bit better later in the day to see if if I could even do a LSR but it never really subsided at all yesterday. Far from ideal, but I don't plan to chase the miles this week. If time allows ill get out for a bit longer on some of the runs this week. The pain and swelling has defo gone down now so I hope to get out at some stage later today anyway which is more positive, I suppose. If that is to me my bad week, I'll take it.

Serious though, can the wind and rain f off at this stage....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,582 ✭✭✭Swashbuckler

Bad luck with the toe...Load it up with Arnicare cream constantly..it'll subside the bruising and swelling quickly.

As for the weather - oh I hear ya....I'm trying to use it to my advantage though - mental resilience and all that. Got pummeled by the wind for my session last night - partly down to a really bad route choice.

After a poor previous week, happy to bank a better one this week, although it probably looks better on paper.

    Monday - 11 miles at 7.58

I said I wouldn't chase lost miles from last week, but knew with the week that was in it with 2 extra holiday days, there would be opportunities to extend some runs. This was an evening effort and took in some fairly tasty hills. Enjoyable to get out again after the frustrations of the previous day. The toe still looked horrific but there was no pain.

    Tuesday- 9 miles at 6.58

10 hour turnaround between these 2 runs wasn't ideal but 6am was only window to get this done. This was a 4, 3, 2,1 min off 75 seconds at approx 10k pace. My legs were tired from previous night so it was done off effort instead. The reps averaged at around 6 min mile pace. The first few reps were done just outside marlay and by the 2nd 4 mins effort the park had opened. It was a lovely mild morning and I wasn't the only crazy doing an early morning session it seemed. Happy to have banked that one before a very busy day in work.

    Wed 5.62 miles @8.10

Another early morning job before I headed off to the office. No rain or wind for 2nd morning in a row- a recent record .😄

    Thursday 20 miles @7.02

We had planned to attend the local parade with some friends so I wanted to get this wrapped up early so I could enjoy the day with the kids after the last 2 years of no parades etc. The plan here was 7.15 moderate pace throughout, but after the 2nd mile, I just got into a comfortable rhythm at 7 min mile pace so I kept it there. I never strayed too far away from home here as I had a bottle of water stashed where I wanted to loop by a couple of times. I haven't bothered with gels yet as 2 or 3 is about all I would take in a marathon anyway. I'll probably trial that on the next one. I tired a little towards the end but had the feeling I could have kept the pace for a couple more miles anyway. All in all, a decent confidence booster that I needed. I ended up having to do quite a bit of walking later on the day, quite often with a child on my shoulders so my right foot and and shoulders in particular were happy to get home later on as I flaked on couch with a few cans. The Plantar Facistis has been behaving itself as of late but got a little reminder that night not to be going over 40k steps too regularly.

    Friday 3.5 miles @ 8.35

Had the option here of a rest day but got out early again for a recovery run. I felt a bit stiff in the first ten minutes but legs warmed up then. We spent the morning in the zoo then. The weather was perfect and on the way out, I got a bit of FOMO in the phoenix park when I saw the masses out running in the lovely weather.

    Saturday 6.35 miles @ 8.05

Debated whether going up to marlay for park run but ultimately decided to go down to the club speed session in St Endas Park. The numbers were low with the weekend that was in it ,but I really enjoyed the shorter quieter session on the grass to keep the legs ticking over.

    Sunday 10 miles @7.58

This was an initial loop around the perimeter of marlay followed by the parkrun route to keep myself interested.

    65 miles for week

Work will be busy for next 2 weeks so it will take up more headspace to schedule runs along with everything else. I may end up doing the long run on Thursday again this week otherwise it may have to be a middle of the night job if I were leave it to the weekend.

So looks like you're fully committed to Limerick at this stage?

I hear ya on getting the 20 miler done before the madness of Paddies Day. I pulled my 20 miler to Wednesday so as to clear up the entire day. It meant I had three big sessions within 7 days (Thursday, Sunday, Wednesday) and 69 miles covered in that week. It's taken me longer than I'd like to recover from it. Hard to balance it all.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,008 ✭✭✭Lambay island

Ah yeh. Only injury would stop me partaking now. I'm coming down solo it seems so I'll be ready to party after 😄.

That's a big week from you it seems. Make sure the easy runs remain easy after that..Yeh, it can fall that way sometimes. I debated doing another longer run yesterday myself as my OH away next wkend which limits me then. I thought better of it in the end and did a MLR.

    Quick Update :

Limerick Marathon is still on the cards this week for me.

I have had a couple of hiccups in the last 5 weeks, One been the stubbed toe which cost me running Bohermeen half and also losing a long run that week. The second was a bout of covid about a month ago. Compared to some others, I got off very lightly on that front. The whole family got it at the time but we all only seemed to have cold like symptoms that lasted a couple of days, if even. It only slightly affected my running at the time - eased myself back at first to test the waters. The week did have an effect though with kids out of school and all on top of and annoying the hell out of each other. My work took the hit..Ha. It was nice when everyone returned to work ,school the following week... In fact, my best run of the block was a 20 miler (at 5.30am to avoid people) at 15-20 seconds slower that MP at the end of that week. Thats was a make or break run for me. If I wasn't up for that, I would have called time on GLR, I was ready to either to pull plug or revert to easy at any time during it.. I had no ill effects which was a big relief.

I had always planned to race the Great Ireland run but with what happened above, i debated pulling out a few times. I really wanted to see where the fitness was at however. It worked out well and ran a disciplined 36.16. I was able to empty out in the last mile and didn't leave anything out there. It was a nice confidence booster.

I'm in a better place fitness wise than when I DNF'd back in Galway in October, but not quite where I was when I did my virtual sub 3 back in 2020. I'm not a million miles away but defo a couple of KG's heavier. The diet took a hit around the covid week and then there were far too many easter eggs floating about the place recently 😏

I have completed four 20+ miles runs, six 30k plus runs all with a decent chunk of MP miles incorporated. I'm approaching 900 miles for the year, so I think that will give me a chance. The target is simply anything with a 2 at the start. The Trim 10 mile race and the latest 10k point towards something quicker but there are still some mental scars there from Galway and I simply wont be aggresive here. I plan to go out at 6.50 mile pace and see where that takes me. Looking at a certain someone else plan from these parts, I will probably cross paths at some stages with himself, if all things going well. I would love to tick the sub 3 box in an official race and give me the platform to maybe be more aggresive at DCM. To be clear , I'm not thinking beyond Sunday though.

Having "local knowledge" will help you 🤣

Incase we don't talk in detail about it and you've ditched me to chase sub 2.55 , the last 10k is certainly not the worst.

Mile 20 is all through town with good support and pretty much flat.

Mile 21 is on the north circular road loop and again pretty much flat with maybe a tiny short incline.

Mile 22 is still on north circular but this section has a long drag (nothing terrible but its noticable).

Mile 23 is probably the most pleasant of the last 10k as it includes the drop all the way down to the GAA grounds.

Mile 24 is nasty enough as you loop around (which as a couple of pulls) and then you have to head back up the hill you came down.

Once you reach the very top of that hill its all flat to the finish.

Just wanted to give you that breakdown so you could judge the last 10k.

Thanks all for the kind wishes..I was on for a 2.58 until start of mile 23 when a sniper shot the hamstring out of nowhere. Worst cramp I remember experiencing along with a dizzy spell. Finished then in a shuffle in something like 3.09. Back to drawing board. I'm sure I'll add a report at some stage with my thoughts. Big congrats to @Swashbuckler who ran a fantastic debut marathon. Pleasure to accompany him for 22 of those miles- Top man.

    Limerick Report

"You can't turn back the clock, but you can wind it up again"

I arrived down to Limerick on Saturday evening and basically lounged around the hotel room watching the snooker and keeping off the feet as best as I could. The previous night - I hadn't slept at all really and when I finally did nod off, I woke with the sniffles and potentially the start of a cold. Due to that poor nights sleep, I slept quite well then on the sat night before the race- woke up a little snuffly but in general felt good and ready.

Swashbuckler kindly swung by the hotel and picked me up and off we headed into town. It struck me as we walked towards the start/bag drop there were more hills and tiers to the streets than I previously remembered. It had been a fair while since I was in Limerick though and I wasn't previously re-conning where I'd be running on them.

Dropped off the bag, then to swashbucklers amusement as I joined the queue for the portaloos , I realised I had left the running belt with gels back in the bag - back I trud.

    Mile 1 - 23

I don't remember much at all. Maybe, I should have listened to the prayer by the Bishop at the start..

One particular thing sticks with me though. I started to sweat an awful lot early on. I was sniffling quite a lot that sometimes it was affecting my breathing. The singlet felt very heavy by approx mile 3. It may not be the reason for what happened but it may have contriubuted to it. I felt comfortable running 6.40-6.50 pace throughout all this stage. There were no demons.

    Mile 23 Onwards -

As I alluded to already, I felt I was going well and was looking forwarding to finishing in front of the crowd. There was a bit of a steady drag towards end of mile 22 and I was just placed on the inside line at the rear end of the sub 3 pacing group. I got a minor forewarning pinch in the left hamstring about a minute previoulsy so I decided to ease up the hill and not try to be near the front of group. Let the others do the work here and ease off on the downhill that will have to come soon. I wasn't worried at that stage as that pinch had gone as soon as it came.

It was so sudden then - Boom - the hamstring just locked up immediately. I tried to run a bit further and hang off the back of the group a bit longer but it was quickly evident, that was not possible.

I had gone from running very comfortably and possibly within myself to this all of a sudden. I tried stretching but initially that made it worse as I watched the group sail off into the horizon. I took a few deep breaths and slowly stretched again. This time, I was able to start to walk and ever so slightly broke into a run that allowed me to within about 400 metres, get back to 07.35 min mile pace. A few folk were now starting to catch me and alos go pass me. I tried not to let it break my spirit, but yeh - hard to control the mental side now. I came to a bit of a downhill ,so tested the water a bit and went down to 07.20 pace but I was at that for about 10 seconds before my hamstring told my brain what he thought in an aggressive manner. I couldn't move for longer this time after stopping. I'm not sure what was left in race, maybe 2 miles or something. I felt really dizzy as soon as I stopped this time. A few folk saw me and I got urged on by these locals.

I eventually broke into a run/walk 20 seconds on /off type of thing. the 20 seconds jogging felt like 5 mins though. Every time I stopped i was getting dizzy again so the walks starting lasting longer. The whole thing was becoming surreal and felt like an outer body experience. Could or should I have stopped now ? It crossed my mind, in fact every thing was crossing my mind. I suddenly didn't care about anyone or anything around me. I grabbed a lot of jellies from a kid on the street and chugged them down like I was necking a shot of Tequila. I asked for a drink as it suddenly dawned on me that I was dehyrdrated but no one had water right there. I saw a water station in the distance or was it a mirage- f**k knows - I'm going that way anyway. I will call into a house if I have to"

It was a water station to my relief- I drank 3 bottles back to back and brought a 4th for the rest of the hike to the end. I felt better and I started to run again - Now , when I say run , it felt more like the pace you would do walking the wrong way up an escalator but I was moving anyway. The mind started to clear again and the thought process went something like this " I wonder how swashbuckler is getting on, has he finished? Jaysus I'm starving, i'd murder a pint now"

I saw the 1000 metres to go sign then the one for 800 metres to go. I had to stop again, cant remember why I stopped but someone very supportive came up to me and said "break into a jog there and you will still get under 3.10". Ive no idea where he came from but he was in the middle of the road facing me - maybe he didnt actually exist. The crowd were brilliant from here on in. I had long stopped caring about time but it was enough to get me running again. In fact, my watch was only at 3.03 which shocked me as it felt like I was in this state forever.

I had about 5 mins to get the 600 metres home- seems very manageable - Think again. Crowd were getting bigger now as I went past the 400 sign. I'm going to make it running home or so I thought - Boom - hammer locked again along now with calf on same leg. I was in bits and let a roar as it locked. The crowds were big now on both sides of the road and I was only 200 or so metres short of the finishing line, 100 metres short of the last bend but I couldn't move. A man scaled the railing and linked my arm to get me moving, I tried but I couldn't. He stayed with me until i was able to walk again - I gave him a smile and a nod- about all I could muster. I went from walk, slowly back into a run to a huge cheer from the crowd. I thougt I was smiling but the finishing photos say otherwise.. I ran the last 100 metres and gallery there were none the wiser what happened me on the previous corner. What an ordeal that last 5k was but I was done in 3.09.25.

I caught up with swashbuckler again and was chuffed to hear he got the sub 3. I went into the massage tent then and as soon as i lay down on the table, various different muscles starting locking into a cramp. At one stage, my neck , jaw, right hand, and left calf were all locked in tandem. There were up to three masseuses at one stage helping me. It was a horrid 20-30 mins until eventually I was able to get my body back to myself- with deep breaths and some brilliant treatment.

I never want to experience that again. I need to reflect more on this one. Any advice is welcome. I still plan to run DCM.

    Cheers

Wow even reading that report sounds painful D. Well done on toughing it out, don't know how you actually managed it.

On the cramps thing i would imagine dehydration would have been the main issue and maybe not enough carbs on board?

Did you drink much water that morning and then at each water station on the course? What type gels and how many did you take? Did you use a salt/electrolyte tablet at all during the race?

Jaysus, I got cramp reading that.

Fairplay, and a humorous report too. After all that, I love the final affirmation.

Cheers J - Could be both alright . My previous 3 marathons had all taken place in October so there is that. It would have been more humid on Sunday and in hindsight, I'm sure I didn't take enough water onboard before or during race. I have previously been a minimalist when it comes to gels and aids but maybe this is one area I need to look at. I took 3 gels which 2 were caffeine actually. I accidently binned another unopened standard gel on route where I mixed it up with empty one. I have never taken an electrolyte tablet before. Carb loading could have been better too, I suppose. I tend not to change anything with eating habits in week of race.

Hey D, sounds a lot like my Berlin hell 10 years ago. Cramps used to be my #1 enemy. Then I started dropping a hi5 electrolyte tab into a pint of water regularly. After anything sweaty. Workouts or easy in humidity etc. Seems to work and havent looked back. Id have one the day before a marathon and one the morning of too. I had a couple in my pocket at Limerick in 19 and swallowed with water sometime after half way.

Anyway, fair play for finishing. Base is there for DCM. Maybe practice a proper fatigue long run?

Jesus fair play for finishing it out D, the end sounded so painful. I got into the habit of using electrolyte tablets training for DCM 19 & continued to use them for Manchester too. I would break them in half then pop them into every 2nd water bottle, maybe it's something else to look at.

Loved reading your report, see ye at DCM 😊

Cheers folks, appreciate the input. Electrolyte tablets seem like a no brainer to bed in for DCM so.

You probably remember but my bro in law had two bottles of premixed diuralyte sachets handed to me during the run and I had taken on a diuralyte each morning and night in the two days leading up to the big day. Seems like a no brainer coz diuralyte literally will cause you zero gastro issues.

They work quite well for a hangover too😂😂

The first 87% of the marathon: 88 words

The final 13% of the marathon: 936 words

Great story but obviously catastrophic finish. Well done battling to the end. FWIW some recent stuff suggests cramp is not related to dehydration, salt, drinking pickle juice etc. but rather just run of the mill muscle fatigue as the marathon slowly crushes your body to oblivion.

If your report was a book I’d say it was unputdownable. I couldn’t stop reading even though I wanted to. That last part sounded so painful and, to be honest, quite frightening. You’re a beast for finishing. I hope you’re feeling okay and continuing to recover.

I had to re-read that. Your hand and jaw locked?? The only things i could think of was that they were the result of gritted teeth and clenched fists, as you absolutely toughed that out. Fair play and a great report.

Singers post is well timed. I'm no marathon runner but experience cramp at times. Last weekend after my 1500 race both calves started to cramp during my warm down. And before i could even start my warm down after the Trim 10 mile they properly locked up that i couldn't walk. Any other times I've felt cramp has been on easy runs on tired legs. Maybe it is just hydration for me too but I'm open to the possibility of it being something else.

Haha to be fair, I do remember parts of of the first 87%(did you manually count the words?) . I started to draft a bit more about it, but I didn't know any road names and was giddy to get to the drama 😀

Thanks, yeh I'm not too bad now, still a bit tight in the legs but eager to get back out running later in the week.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,008 ✭✭✭Lambay island

I think the more I was concentrating on breathing and trying to loosen out the leg cramps, my upper body was tightening up simultaneously. Simply a weird experience. In terms of cramping, it has happened me in the past but not compared to Sunday when i felt fully in control. Yeh what singer posted adds some food for thought.

That sounds horrible - you have my every sympathy as a fellow cramper. I can remember running Manchester and spending 20-30 mins in a massage tent as every muscle in my body went into spasm - hands, feet, neck, everything - its not a nice experience.

I've tried so many things to help my history of cramping - if you've ran other marathons and not cramped, well maybe the electrolytes will help - I hope its as simple as that for you.

If only you had punched your legs!!

    He actually did!

Yeh @AuldManKing I missed that crucial nugget of info above. I did try it initially but nothing happened for me bar a few odd looks as runners passed me by

Yikes, what an ordeal. I'm looking forward to reading Singer's links there as dehydration is what popped into my head too - mainly because you were able to down three bottles of water at that water station - didn't realise that was even possible.

Love those bits where you questioned what you were seeing - no better depiction of the marathon fog. You were definitely bonked but then again most of us usually are in the final couple of miles.

Also, the sniffles. You had a lot of stuff going on. Well done on finishing out, serious HTFU in evidence.

Wowser, that sounds pretty horrific. Amazing that you finished, serious mental toughness (or madness 😉) to get through those last few miles. Dehydration may not have been the only issue at play in the cramps but it was definitely a factor if you were able to knock back 3 bottles of water at a water station 😱 At that stage of a marathon i wouldn't be able stomach 3 sips never mind 3 bottles - we are all different but 3 bottles is definitely extreme! No doubt you will take on board the advice of your fellow fast runners around here and knock it out of the park in DCM 😊 Well done on a sub 3:10 marathon all the same, some achievement just to cross that line in what is still a very respectable time and you should take confidence that for 22-23 miles you were cruising at sub 3hr pace.
