Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I got it to work pretty well the last time I was in Europe. I just got the settings from them and after a restart it worked fine. My (strong) advice is before you go contact their support and get them to detail all the changes you have to do. It was a shambles coming home though as I had to context support to understand what to do to be able to get back using 48 here.

The time before that when I travelled it was a total cluster. It took them over 10 days for them to resolve the issue.

It surely would be easier for them to sort this out now rather than occupying all those support resources.

My service has worked when abroad after getting the correct settings and no problems on return here-reconnects straightaway.

This has appeared on 48's homepage. I assume they will be upping the price for new customers after April 4th, unless they have any new bundles planned.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,754 ✭✭✭beachhead

Or are they closing the service.Offers being emailed and texted offering deals to move to 3.Move to 3 and pay a minimum of e20 a month for one or move and get a "free" Samsung or Oppo which cost e35 a month on 3 website another offer. Are they aving a larf?

I don't think these roaming "problems" will ever be resolved. I'm guessing all mobile operators have to pay operators abroad hefty fees so their users get seemless roaming with adequate speeds. And I'm guessing 48 are going for the dialup package with each one. Hence the reason they are able to offer such low prices. No other operator I'm aware of comes close to €7.99 a month but they all do roaming properly except for 48

Are the problems related to people trying to download films from Netflix etc Hardly just internet browsing.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,511 ✭✭✭KildareP

Tesco and Virgin are the same. But you're right it likely won't be resolved. At least not as things stand currently.

Roaming is a direct loss of revenue to the likes of 48, Tesco and Virgin.

Example, the €10.99 plan comes with 10GB of EU roaming allowance.

Under EU roaming regulations the wholesale data cap - that maximum EU operators can charge other EU operators for roaming - is €2.50/GB ex. VAT (since 01/01/2022, it used to be higher again).

Thus, if you use that full 10GB allowance in the EU, it can cost 48 up to €25, ex. VAT, to provide that to you at wholesale rates.

On the €10.99 plan, 48 get €8.94 once VAT is taken off, which means 48 makes absolutely nothing from the next 3 months worth of memberships because it's used to pay off the €25 roaming charge.

Not only that but any service that they also have to provide to you during those 3 months in return for your membership is done at a complete loss for them.

Unlike Vodafone, Eir or Three, they have physical networks so while roaming is also a cost to provide for their customers while abroad, they can recoup and offset some or all of those costs through charging foreign operators to allow their customers roam while in Ireland in return. They can also negotiate mutually beneficial roaming rates far lower than the wholesale rates with individual operators in each country. This is why Eir, Vodafone and Three will all prefer different networks for a given country while roaming.

The likes of 48 don't have that leverage because they have no network to offer to the foreign operator at a more competitive rate in return.

Hence why there is absolutely no incentive for EU roaming to work well on the likes of 48 because it literally loses them money to provide it to you.

Roaming worked grand for me up North last weekend. It automatically changed over to O2-UK about five minutes after crossing the border. Mobile data, texts, directions on google maps worked fine. Had to restart my phone to get it to reconnect to 48 on the way back down but it was fine after that.

Hopefully 48 customers will see 4G roaming from 1st July when the new Roaming Regulation takes effect.

Agreed, but less than 5 minutes if you have the correct settings.Could be EE connection as well.

I saw on another forum several 48 users picking up 5G sporadically. Could be testing before a wider rollout maybe?

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,326 ✭✭✭crazy 88

I got it up north without any need for messing with settings. Speed was about the same as home.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,754 ✭✭✭beachhead

The settings could be from a previous provider for some people

  • Moderators, Regional South Moderators Posts: 5,842 Mod ✭✭✭✭Quackster

That's because Proximus provides 48 with roaming services so 48 SIMs effectively become Proximus SIMs for roaming purposes and therefore need a separate (Proximus) APN profile when abroad.

The switchover should happen automatically but this doesn't seem to happen for many and therefore they have to manually switch between domestic and roaming APNs.

So try 'Network Selection' set to 'Automatic' first. If that doesn't work, then manually choose 'International Roaming Profile' when roaming and change back to 'Local Home Profile' when you're back home.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,945 ✭✭✭✭Mimikyu

As Quackster mentioned Proximus provides the roaming for 48, which is ironic because I wasn't able to get roaming data working any of the three times I was in Belgium recently. I spent a good half an hour each time messing with settings. Automatic, manual, manually selected different providers and nothing would work for me. Vodafone eSIM connected straight away each time.

I've been able to roam on EE in the UK but you have to set it manually:

Sim Toolkit -> When Abroad -> Network Selection -> Manual -> International Roaming Profile

It should automatically connect to EE after this adjustment but if not do a manual network search and select it yourself. In my experience EE has much better 3G data speeds than O2 - I was getting 7-14Mbps on EE compared to 2-4Mbps with O2.

Is anyone getting slow or broken connection for data on 48? Started last Thursday the connection to 4g seems unstable with 48. Others in my family have the same problem. Videos stutter and break connection now and then.

My friend uses a three sim and has a bit of a problem also and I think 48 uses Three as they are owned by Three.

I’m trying to add a Revolut card to my Apple Wallet and it’s saying it’s sending a code to my phone to verify but code not coming through. Other codes seem to come through for verification. Any ideas?

Email in from 48 this morning called "Planning on heading abroad?"

    Hi,

We are aware some 48 customers have had trouble connecting to services while roaming.

Sometimes the handset & SIM don’t make an immediate connection to the roaming network, so the SIM needs some additional help to get connected.

If you do experience this, don’t worry, you can manually connect to a network by carrying out a few simple steps.

Visit our community roaming troubleshooting guide here before you jet off, so you know what to do if you should experience this.

Was up in Derry yesterday and couldn't pick up a network or a signal at all, regardless of how many times I restarted the phone, or turned on and off airplane mode.

Admittedly I was trying to do it by searching for a mobile network and everything was coming up with (forbidden) in the name of the network, instead of going in through the simcard toolkit and "going abroad" option like they say to do, so I can't let 48 take the blame. It was only when I was well south of Drogheda that I remembered something about the sim toolkit and it was too late to try it then.

I'm in the process of switching to 48 from three.

Besides porting my number (currently underway), is there anything I need to do? i.e. do I need to follow up separately with three to cancel my account or does porting the number result in three closing my account. I am bill pay, but the contract has expired.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,103 ✭✭✭GIMP

When the port of the number is completed successfully your 3 account will be closed automatically.

Was in Northern Ireland on Saturday 2nd April.2 numbers on 48.No service at all on one number. No data or incoming/outgoing calls on the 2nd phone but managed to get 2 sms out on 2nd phone after a while-maybe an hour wait each time.Phones were as always as per 48 settings and up to date.Connection on 2nd phone was intermittent to non existent too.Obviously trying to cut down on roaming costs.AVOID.CRAP COMPANY

Bring using 48 for the last 8 months or so and working well so far but haven't been abroad yet to try out roaming.

Does anyone know is it possible to use the same email for 2 different numbers or would they need to seperate email addresses?

Seperate emails or the first number you receive will be deleted and replaced with the second.England,Spain,France are not a problem so far but N.Ireland is for some reason.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,381 ✭✭✭lolie

Yeah just see that in the Support section, pity they don't have a family account as it would be very handy for parents signing up teenagers.

Weird I haven't had any issues up the north. Furthest I usually go is Enniskillen though. Edinburgh was fine last year too. I'd be a little more wary about travelling around Europe. Last place I visited pre-pandemic was St. Petersburg where obviously there was nothing so I got a local sim. I don't recall it working on the layover in Amsterdam either.

I'll be putting it to the test this year so I guess we'll see. If we can get 4G abroad from July 1st for €8 then this is an absolute steal!

If you have a Gmail account, just use different versions of the same address by putting one or more full stops into the address for each additional 48 account.

Try putting a plus and some text before the @ for example if your email is email@gmail.com then something like email+blah@gmail.com will also work. Gmail will just ignore the bit after the plus.

  • Moderators, Regional Midwest Moderators Posts: 11,144 Mod ✭✭✭✭MarkR

My email is firstname.surname@gmail.com, I set up an account for my mother by sending it to firstname.surname+mom48@gmail.com. Works great.

  • Moderators, Regional South Moderators Posts: 5,842 Mod ✭✭✭✭Quackster

Another option is if your Gmail address is whatever@gmail.com, then use whatever@googlemail.com instead. Works a treat too.

I got a very high speed test today in Limerick.

    I've a 5g handset, bit it's still reporting as 4g

In Spain first time outside Uk and Ireland since I got 48, absolutely no service. 3 out of 4 of us on 48 thankfully I left my wife’s phone on Three. Won’t be staying with them. Their roaming guide of absolutely no use.

  • Moderators, Regional Midwest Moderators Posts: 11,144 Mod ✭✭✭✭MarkR

Sounds awful, did you try those suggestions from 48, or did they just not work?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,754 ✭✭✭beachhead

Revolut and 48 have been a problem since last Dec for me-b4 that not really an issue.Same for me this year-code does come thru,no 3D secure page opening.I'm on Android.I think there is an authentication issue going on with 48 as a retailer.I would love to know what.Of,course 48 support claim to know the solution-change browser, use the gift shop, cut and paste links they provide in chat etc but nothing works

When I arrived in France and selected international roaming profile, I couldn't connect to data. Checked settings and my APN settings had been lost!

Had to add 48months.liffeytelecom.com and then connected straight away :)

try this or just change the APN to 48months.liffeytelecom.com and leaving everything else blank. It might work!

Was in Spain twice in last 4 months and those settings working.Didn't have to alter the settings already installed on my phone

I was in London over the Easter and had issues connecting to a network and getting data to work.

I have a dual sim phone so I could use the work vodafone sim straight away and later figure out 48 one.

48 didn't connect straight away and I had to use the 48 Sim app to get the international roaming profile option and eventually I connected to a network, although I forced a 3G/2G connection which may have helped initially but I reverted to 5G/LTE/3G/2G and it still connected to Vodafone UK and also O2 UK later in the week.

Data didn't work, I tried adding the APN suggested in the Troubleshooting Roaming Guide but that didn't work. I then deleted the APN (all APNs I think) and added a new one but updated the first 2 lines below and that worked also in the guide. Speeds were 3 to 8 meg.

    1. Name- 48 Internet

    2. APN - 48months.liffeytelecom.com

It did take probably a couple of hours off and on to get everything to work - very frustrating.

Went to other end of the resort 2 days later and it suddenly started working.

Tried their suggested solutions but no solution. My phone battery was going flat as phone seemed to be working overtime trying to find network.

it’s not really acceptable is it? Can’t really depend on it. Is it just something you’d have to accept if you want to stay with 48?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,754 ✭✭✭beachhead

It's going that way it seems.A lot of hit & miss. You pays your e7.99 and accept that kind of service

in Belgium over Easter, 2 of the kids phones are on 48 and neither of them could get data regardless of what I did with the settings. Not great, will look into moving them to GoMo before we go abroad again.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,754 ✭✭✭beachhead

48 support says it's customers are imagining all their problems while roaming. It's their fault or their 'phones

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,754 ✭✭✭beachhead

Have come across a problem with paying by Revolut. It seems there can be a "block" on payment within the app.Go to transactions and press on the 48 payment. There will be an option to unblock the payment. You will still have to repeat the payment for it to go thru.I have not tried it yet after unblocking

The roaming issues are most likely, auto/manual network selection.

Trouble for some might be due to 48 being pushed onto 2g/3g o2 irl legacy network, aka old o2 IRL and off the three network.

3 never setup a 2g network and had roaming agreement with Vodafone ie,.

3 irl bought o2 irl & now own both networks, so 48/tesco mobile and others use o2 irl unless in strong 4g areas and use 3 irl 4g.

3 irl Sims uses 3g/4g unless only 2g on o2 irl is available.

Now o2 & 3 are 3g, so I think that's where the signal drops because I'm in an area with o2 3g & 3 irl 3g, my 3 sim seems to be more stable coz I only end up on 2g in a lift or shopping centre carpark. 48 here drops to 2g more often than 3 sim in same area cause 48 favours o2 2g/3g as I'm regularly at edge of 4g masts coverage area.

In my area 3g seem strongest, confusing 48 sim, I think 3 irl sim only uses o2 3g/2g as last resort.
