Yes, a NATO vs Russia conflict would suit the liars of the Russian media. A Russia attacks Ukraine situation is much harder for them to spin (hence these propagandists being driven to try and pretend to their readers and viewers that the war in Ukraine isn't even happening, despite overwhelming evidence from multiple sources that it is).

Just delaying the inevitable except you have one less country on your side when Ukraine falls. I'm sure Poland and the baltics will be delighted to take a shelling for a few days whilst Nato decide at what stage they think it's worth the risk to support them either.

What's the difference between supplying Ukraine with weapons and not troops?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,381 ✭✭✭Yurt2

That video is eye opening. Many people scared sh*tless of the truth and it's implications for their country. Some literally running away.

Perhaps people underestimate this, but Russia's demographics make it a particularly 'old' country. And a significant amount of old people in Russia are Homo Sovieticus, people that were raised to be USSR normies that are deeply conditioned to be dolice and pliant to the government. This phenomenon should not be underestimated.

Those under 50 will be different and potentially will be the swathe of society to bring Putin down.

Interesting that the old Jewish lady in the end knew exactly what the score is and unafraid to say it. Jews in that part of the world are tough as teak, and suffered disproportionately over the last two centuries. When sh*t goes South in that part of the world, the Jewish community is the first to suffer.

Did we ever figure out why those Russian submarines were snooping around Ireland? We’re not NATO

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,808 ✭✭✭threeball

In the short term. Long term it will just lead to another dictator who gradually becomes drunk on power and ends up where Putin in now. There's zero point in trying to work with Russia. Just make sure they don't have the economic clout to do this again.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,431 ✭✭✭✭Strazdas

They're not 'active participants'. Countries supply each other with weapons all the time (usually by means of arms sales, but there's nothing to say it can't be free).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,291 ✭✭✭✭Gatling

Sure they claimed they took if over on the 28 of February in agreement with the Ukrainian government to safe guard supplies to the Ukrainian population ,and they were sending Russians from Moscow to run the plant long term ,

Russia will spin it anyway they want , they want to wipe out Ukrainian infrastructure so they will end up being solely reliant on Russia for everything once this is done ,I wouldn't be surprised if Viktor Yanukovych has already signed exclusive contracts with Russia for this

How do people still not understand that NATO implementing a no fly zone will lead to WW3

Katie Hannon on Radio 1 has a good set of guests including Catherine Connolly. They were talking about up to 160,000 refugees from Ukraine being sent here by the EU. A logistical nightmare.

What are they doing in the Hyacinth house?

Germany is a success story. It shed its shackles and is a fine democracy now. Surely there is hope…

This was a good enough reason for NATO Intervention. The civilians lives of NATO aligned countries under thread from a radioactive blast.

I can't find it now, but days ago, there were images of a far distant naval ship with significant smoke rising from it, that was said to be a Russian naval vessel that had been hit with a Ukrainian Neptune anti-ship missile.

they want to wipe out Ukrainian infrastructure

I'm really not sure they do G. They've started to cut utilities to the encircled cities, but that's a recent thing. The usual MO in a let's smash the place into submission war is to hit that sorta thing first. Hit power, coms and other utilities to force the civilian population to heel and lessen the opposing forces' ability to operate.

That said, this is in the hands of a capable force and so far Russia is looking anything but that.

Many worry about Artificial Intelligence. I worry far more about Organic Idiocy.

We've no where to put 160,000 we are already struggling with the 10,000 asylum seekers we already have ,and the new plan that suggests asylum Will be housed permanently in own door accommodation (council houses) in 12 weeks from the time they arrive ,

We cannot house another 160,000 families when we already have 130,000 Irish families in dire need for social housing here

With russia its all about spreading fear. Their threats of nuclear war if other countries intervene etc. Shelling bombs at a nuclear plant like tough guys ,again trying to instill fear id say was at least part of the reason.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,431 ✭✭✭✭Strazdas

But we have to step up to the plate. It would be an absolutely terrible look for the country to announce we are "full" and cannot take refugees fleeing a nearby war zone in Europe and who desperately need our help. I don't think the figures will be as high as 160,000 but it may well be into the tens of thousands.

The PR war was won before the invasion even happened. Putin has lost this. He's lost his war. He has confirmed, and indeed, strengthened the idea of a 'Ukrainian people' and Ukrainian nation. He saw them as Russians. That 'Ukraine' wasn't a thing. That his army would roll in, Zelenskeyy would flee and the Ukrainian army would fold. Even if he manages to defeat the Ukrainian army, he cannot hold onto Ukraine. He doesn't have the resources to control 40m people that have found a new patriotism for their country.

Sanctions will not stop this war. Sanctions will take much longer to bite and even then, Russia will survive them even if many people drop into poverty. North Korea & Iran have both proven that not only can you survive under sanctions, you can build nuclear weapons while being sanctioned. NK did that and Iran is currently building nuclear weapons despite the pathetic Biden admin 'deal.

It's going to be tough without a doubt, but it's something we have to do. Every EU country is going to have to go to the well for this.

Consider Poland, in all likelihood, they'll have to settle 1-2 million Ukrainians at the minimum in their country if things get as bad as it currently looks like it will.

    Seriously source please that's sad

Germany was always a functioning country to the forefront of technology. Russia has spent centuries under the thumb of ruthless dictators. Culturally they're night and day and there's no chance of them changing any time soon.

The risk of a global war is higher because of this but not an inevitability at all

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 13,907 ✭✭✭✭Cluedo Monopoly

Not 160,000 families - People. Obviously they dont know the max number yet, it will depend on the war.

Ukrainians will also be given a work visa automatically as soon as they enter. For clarity, that is a change in policy with respect to refugees.

They were talking about enacting emergency laws in order to providing accommodation for all these people.

What are they doing in the Hyacinth house?

Except Ireland, where Ryan and the Greens are working hard to ban LNG in Ireland. Funny thing is, there are more than a few whispers that Gazprom have been funding anti-nuclear and anti LNG activists. You don't suppose....?

I suppose it's relevant that we are a neutral country. Therefore all the immature keyboard warriors here have no sacrifice to make if NATO forces get drawn into a war.

We're allright mate, because we won't need to send any sons or daughters in. (Or perhaps more relevant to the posters here - Mums or Dads)

Do you think that would be because they are scared of being thrown in prison/ disappeared for 15 years for spreading “false information”?

It’s not as easy as being Russian automatically means being an aggressor against Ukraine! That’s a simplistic view.

Don't worry about the 160k red herring figure. 160k families would be about 400k people or about 1% of the population of Ukraine. We happen to be about 1% of the EU population so if EVERY SINGLE PERSON left Ukraine then proportionately that would roughly be the 160k families. But aside from the obvious fact that not everyone is going to leave, the refugees have some agency and will more likely go and stay in neighbouring countries or where they already have connections or roots.

The Americans have short memories, they wrote the book on invading sovereign states, overthrowing governments and interfering with elections. I watched a Condoleezza Rice interview yesterday where they were condemning the breaking of international law by invading a sovereign state, Absolute hypocrisy form them. What would the US do if the Russians threatened to join an organisation that allowed them to set up military bases on the Mexican Border? They would invade Mexico before the Russians had a chance, what's the difference?. Remember the Cuban Missile crisis? I have no love for Putin and I wholeheartedly disagree with the invasion and any form of war anywhere but the why is no one talking about the double standards on BBC, RTE or CNN?
