No - I was replying to your point about hurling never being intended to be a possession based game. Same goes for every sport.

Majority of teams with players good enough now play a short passing game. You rarely if ever see Man City cross into the box anymore since it’s such a low percentage play etc.

Handpass removed would be bizarre - if people still want to play ground passes etc they can. Again, if I’m in possession and get knocked to the ground with ball in hand and surrounded, what am I suppose to do if hand passing is banned? It’s a bizarre thing for you to suggest.

Again, you're acting as if i can't understand why posession in sports is important. I stand by my opinion that hurling was never intended to be a possesion based game, but this does not imply that i don't understand why it has evolved to its current state

Also i didn't propose removing the handpass, see my previous post where i explain all this clearly.

And to give an answer to your hypothetical situation of being knocked the ground and having no option to handpass, perhaps you would be less likely to take the ball to hand and let yourself be caught in posession in the first place knowing that you couldnt hand pass your way out of trouble?

Getting rid of hand passing is a farcical idea. We need to keep the skills of the game not do away with them. I would give 4 points for a goal though because the game is turning into a long range shoot out now. The slioter should be heavier. Also refs shouldn't be awarding frees for every tackle like they do nowadays. Since when did hurling become do soft. There's no harm in a little needle do just let the game flow more than blowing the whistle on everything. It's also s pity ground hurling is a dying art. As a young lad you were always taught to keep 2 hands on the hurl and pull hard😁

How in the sweet Jesus do you know what hurling "was intended to be"

Have you being doing a seance with Cusack, Davin and the boys.

Hurling has always changed. If we go by the it's supposed to be this or that then you must hate Mick Mackey for being an awful show off with his fancy soloing which was not originally part of the game.

Typical of you to pull one segment of a sentence from multiple posts and use it as the basis of a hyperbolic retort while ignoring the overall sentiment of the posts

I have repeatedly stated that I understand that hurling/sport evolves over time, and while saying hurling was not intended to be a possession game probably wasn't the best way of stating it, I mean that hurling at the time the rules were put together most likely was envisaged as not ever being a possession based game and it wasn't in the main until recent years.

Some changes in how a sport lead to greater entertainment, some are to the detriment of the game as a spectacle, the excessive use of the handpass (often illegal) to maintain possession is in the latter category in my opinion. All this came about from a discussion about allowing the throw vs banning the handpass, I assume that being a purveyor of all things modern you'd love to see your team free to throw the ball around even more than they are at the moment?

I agree with everything you say here except the bit where hand passing is a skill. It is not a skill, in fact it's the opposite - it's something players do because it's far simpler to throw / palm the ball in tight areas rather than try a short stick pass. And why wouldn't they, if they can get away with it. Change the rule somehow or enforce it much more strictly.

There is nobody suggesting getting rid of the handpass. Suggestion is to change the rule so that the ball cannot be released from the same hand that is holding the ball. Players can still play the ball from the hand off the hurl or by switching hands. This makes keeping possession a lot more difficult, eliminates any ambiguity over the handpass so making the refs decision easier, will reduce rucks as winning them will not have the same reward (throw out) and will make for better tackling with the hurl rather than the hands ie hooking and blocking. The tackle has deteriorated into a load of hands, arms and elbows all over players trying to stop the throw.

If you cant see any issues with the amount of throwing the ball around the place then you dont really appreciate the essence and integrity of the game. There is no skill in throwing a ball.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30,499 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

Before we try that we have to clamp down on the rampant holding of the hurley or hurley arm.

It will increase the amount of "hands arms elbows" you want to eliminate.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 515 ✭✭✭Davys Fits

You think it might but if we could eliminate the throw then the refs can crack down on the spare hand fouls. As it stands defenders have little choice but to use their hands as the throw is not defendable. I see several instances where a players in possession gets surrounded by 3 or 4 opposing players for him just to simply throw the ball out of the tackle to a loose player. Even Rugby or Gaelic football doesn't make it so easy to release the ball from the tackle.

The handpass will be forgotten about when the championship comes around. The hurling leauge is a farce of a competition, one of Loais, Antrim Offaly will be relegated and no one wants to get to the final. So teams are only fluting around at the moment and the media are picking up on the handpass to have something to talk about.

Once the championship starts there won't be a mention about the ball being thrown as teams will be going full pelt and Marty will tell us it is a game of the God's.

Good conversation here. I agree with alot of it. 4 points for a goal would be a good idea for starters. There's definately an issue with the ball travelling too far. I'd like to see about 30yards knocked off the distance it can go . I don't know if it's weight or volume or what but that needs to be done. It's only recently that the GAA made all balls the same size by actually lowering the weight on about 40'% of balls because they did a 'survey among players'...Talk about silly.

I'd like to see indirect frees for over carrying and illegal handpass..for technical fouls and for fouls outside 70 yards or so. Stop the likes of Horgan taking a minute yp trot out and stops goalies aswell.

I'd like to see the 'shoulder ' revived. I'd allow more body collisions provided it wasn't directly into the chest from a shoulder. I'd like to see more hits as opposed to pulling and dragging. And I'd like to see the rucks limited...no attempt to rise when there's a ruck of more than 3. It has to be struck on the ground.

@PeggyShippen wow, that’s the first suggestion I’ve seen of an Indirect Free for Overcarrying/Thrown Ball and I completely get it and like it.

Should calm things down slightly on the amount of scoreable frees anyway where it’s taking ages for a scorer to ‘set up’

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30,499 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

Striking only in a ruck are you mad. There wouldn't be a hurler left in the country with any ankles.

Making the free harder to score from after an illegal hand pass will encourage players to hand pass.

I would like to see a few tests done with a heavier sliotar though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,260 ✭✭✭PeggyShippen

Heavier doesn't mean less distance. There's an article about that very thing in today's paper.

I dont think making a free indirect will do anything except good. It ll allow refs to call more illicit handpasses. A team doesn't deserve to give away a score for over carrying or handpassing incorrectly or other technical fouls.

Ground hurling in the past prevented rucks precisely because youd get whacked if you went for the rise in a ruck. Everyone moving the ball on instead of the horrible sight of attempted ball rising. It makes the game look dumb. More pulling doesn't mean more injuries. I actually think that ground hurling will come back again ...accurate striking from the ground will probably be the next 'innovation ' or reinvention. Everything is cyclical. Please don't mistake Accurate striking on the ground with wild pulling on the ball. It's like comparing chalk and cheese.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30,499 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

There are more reasons than fear of a leg break for the no rucks and bringing in rules that encourage that sort of mutually assured destruction is wrong. One reason for more rucks is that the fitter players mean there are more bodies able to make it to the breakdown.

Technical fouls for illegal hand passing would be brilliant if every illegal hand pass was called but there is no indication refs can make that happen under any rule set.

Probably right about the ground hurling. Players who can accurately stick pass or kick it to a teammate would be better than rucks for his teams chances of keeping possession.

Wexford through to the semi finals, Cork will join them if they can beat Galway tonight

Another fine win for Cork, beating Galway by 6 points tonight, into the semis we go.

At the moment, we look a very well balanced team, with a clear idea of how we want to play and are producing some good performances.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30,499 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

Wouldn't be surprised to see aCork Wexford league final. Both teams look on a real mission during the league.

2A is some division and producing some crazy outcomes. Down beating Westmeath away 1-18-1-16. Last day out sees Kerry Vs Down, Westmeath vs Kildare. Very possible Westmeath are after messing themselves up as final standings could be H2H between themselves and Down (in which Down will overtake them) for a place in the final. Kerry far from safe too as a loss to Down and a win for Westmeath will see a Down vs Westmeath Final

What happened with Gillane's sending off? Kiely is blaming the ref and Clare player?

“Had the referee run in and told the player to get up off the ground, it would have been more appropriate. I don't think that was a serious misdemeanour at all.”

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,260 ✭✭✭PeggyShippen

Gillane was being held by Cleary ,couldn't compete for the ball. Then he unfortunately swung back twice.. a short swing. Cleary went down like he was shot and Gillane git a second deserved yellow. Ref evened it up a minute later with a ridiculous yellow for Brown.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,646 ✭✭✭washman3

Fairly sure that Donal Og and Joanne will explain it exactly to us tonight, and will be disappointed that at least 5 more Limerick players didn't see red.....😉😉

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30,499 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

Didn't have a great view of the Brown sending off but it looked very soft. Diving and feigning injury is definitely a thing in hurling though but won't be tackled because there will be war if HQ admits that hurlers cheat just like in soccer and other "dirty sports"

off topic i am sure but who is in charge of sligo , they have been making some serious progress in the last few years thats a huge win again today for them to be the best of the rest in Connaught is massive work could be division 2A By the end of next years league

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,602 ✭✭✭windy shepard henderson

i felt alot of that was going on for both teams today just the ref wasnt sharp enough to it , not sure who was in charge of cork and galway last night but they let a lot of them go

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,309 ✭✭✭evolvingtipperary101

I think the more fair-minded and clued in GAA die-hard know that teams are working out kinks and trying to bring things together and work towards something in the league - whether it's tactical or personal wise. Mistakes will happen.

But such understanding doesn't always stretch to refs trying to get their eye in - (I'd include myself in that).

    Just a thought.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,309 ✭✭✭evolvingtipperary101

    😂😂

Isn't that more Donal Og's thing? He's watching Hegarty's every move.

Just another thought - And I'm not talking about the Sunday Game.

But who are posters going to for their coverage of the GAA - who's good out there?
