Well the same defense can be given to not reporting any figures, particularly case numbers.

I was at the vets today, walked in maskless and everyone in the waiting room was wearing one. I asked at the counter ‘would you like me to put on a mask?’, and she said ‘no no, you’re grand’ - with a big smile behind her (very loose) mask. I’d say the staff are itching to drop them. Vet took his off in the exam room to the great relief of my cat.

I voted NO in the poll because it’s the answer that’s probably most appropriate for me.

I’ll probably wear a mask for my planned weekly shop to Aldi/Supervalu but for other ad-hoc just-popping-in-here situations I’m not going to worry if I have a mask with me or not.

    Didn't seem a high % wearing them

I asked an old lady why she was wearing it

She said " there's still a lot of it around " , probably sums up a lot of the mask wearers.

They don't know why they're wearing them but...

She sounded to me like she knew why she was wearing it . And why exactly did you ask her ?

If you did actually did this there is so something seriously wrong with you. I really hope you are just making that little anecdote up.

I filled the car up with diesel this evening, when I entered the shop there was 3 customers not wearing masks and as I left two customers on the way in not wearing masks. I can't remember ever seeing the staff wearing masks through the whole pandemic which isn't a problem for me as I've never wore one at work

They’ll be rare enough in a week or three when people eventually realise the world isn’t going to end if they don’t wear one.

    No Didn't happen like that

She ventured her reasoning as part of conversation

Don't ask and maybe a good idea to leave random elderly people alone and let them do what they want.

    Yes in all situations.

I wouldn’t wear it in street either unless I was somewhere stationary in a crowded area. I still wear them indoors though except in the house or visiting people I trust have been looking after themselves. Nothing is 100% safe, it’s just a matter of trying to minimise the risks.

Elderly people hate the masks the most.

Do they ? I would be considered older as are my friends and I dont recall you asking any of us ?

Just back from the supermarket. It’s close, I’d guesstimate 55/45 with the very slight majority wearing the mask. I didn’t wear one, which felt fantastic, but I was surprised to be in the minority.

    Yes in all situations.

I'll continue to wear my mask. I teach 200+ kids per week so can't see myself ditching it at work for the foreseeable future.

A lot of people I know were shocked today that the masks are gone. No Taoiseach coming down the steps and making a big announcement and all that so people are unsure.

A tactical decision from a Taoiseach that admitted he personally wants people to wear masks.

The poster said they "I asked an old lady why she was wearing it"

Why you chose to defend this I have no idea and in such a strange imaginary way.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,512 ✭✭✭✭John_Rambo

You shouldn't be asking elderly women why they're wearing masks. Equally, you shouldn't be asking 6'4" well muscled men why they're wearing masks, but I have a feeling you're the type that will stick to asking elderly women.

Was sitting in the dentist office having a chat

Said the masks are gone in shops today today

She said she'll wear hers there's a lot of it around

^^^ Plenty of virtue signallers responding though I notice lol

Post was a bit of a windup but point stands a lot of people only think they know why they're wearing them anyway

Still have to say I could never have forseen them gone by march

MM is another absolute clown giving his opinion

Thanks I am glad to have an imagination. I was clearly taking the piss. Kirk had said it was a general conversation, which you are allow to have, even more so in a dentists waiting room.

    Yes in busy Shops/public transport.

You make it sound like people are delusional to want to keep wearing the mask, or that they're doing it out of terror.

My family know the score. We've done our reading online about the virus, know a few people who have gotten it, etc. We're not freaked out about it, or believe that it's the end of the world.

However, we can see that as a precaution, it isn't much hassle to do (wearing the mask). I don't really get the hate for the masks here, or the need to feel contempt towards people who wear them. Covid causes problems for people with underlying conditions. That's a simple fact. You might not have any such conditions, and neither do I.. however, my parents have a variety of such conditions due to their age. It is irresponsible to ignore the problems and possible damage that covid could do to them... and so, wearing the mask makes sense.

Considering the numbers of elderly in this country, it makes sense for many people who do spent time with such people to be a little careful. Such as wearing the mask, washing their hands, and keeping distance from other people (whether they're wearing the mask or not). It makes sense for that kind of situation. And it doesn't cost much effort to do, and becomes something of habit once you stop thinking about it.

For you, perhaps it doesn't. Grand. Bully for you. However, it's worth showing a tiny bit of respect for those people that covid is relevant for. It doesn't cost you anything not to be dismissive of their concerns.

How is it virtue signalling to continue wearing a mask? Perhaps you could explain that one to me?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,497 ✭✭✭AyeGer

    Yes in all situations.

I was in a shopping centre in Northern Ireland today and way more than half still wearing masks which surprised me. I was expecting a lot less masks. People still keeping their distance too. In fairness in my town south of the border most people are still wearing the masks in shops too. Less than it was a few weeks ago. I think it will become less and less as the weeks pass by.

I'll continue to wear mine due to a family situation. Nobody has commented to me though for wearing one, I'm not sure how ill react if someone does comment though. I'll probably just say because i want to wear it. I wont be giving a complete stranger a breakdown of my families health status.

It's over, Tony won't let you sit at the front of the church during mass and call you out for a special thanks in his sermons.

I would like if people continued to wash their hands properly more than the masks, as was the case throughout COVID. And also respect the benefits of ventilation. These aren't COVID specific points going forward, I just think people should continue with leaving windows open and washing their hands thoroughly going forward.

What an idiotic comment. Again more bs from the pedestal occupiers judging others for maybe wearing a mask. Seriously what is it with the hard man additude on this thread?

If someone is wearing a mask they chose to do so for personal reasons whether family or medical. You don't get a free pass to throw snide remarks at people you don't know because of your own basic ignorance. If you don't want to wear a mask fine. No one is going to make you.
