A mostly peaceful minority. No rioting, no looting, no murders, practically angels. But beeping their horns? The monsters!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,120 ✭✭✭✭Dohnjoe

They were in middle of a capital city blaring truck horns constantly, it was so bad a judge has ordered it stopped, these are people with family and kids in the backs of their trucks. I'm not sure what they are aiming for there, piss of the public even more? The mass road blocking was the key issue, they were slowing supply lines, blocking emergency vehicles. There has been violence, protesters tried to set an apartment block on fire, ambulances have been pelted with rocks, skirmishes have broken out, but it's okay to minimize all that because there's "no murders"

Remember, this isn't a national truck-drivers protest, the vast majority of truckdrivers are vaccinated. This is a fringe group of anti-vaxxers, Trump supporters, far-right nuts pissing everyone off. Thankfully truckers in other countries who've tried the same have generally been too stupid/disorganised to pull it off.

No that would be because the vast majority of countries don't have vaccine mandates like this, so there's not much need to protest. NZ are doing it and already have a camp of protesters.

They haven't arrested anyone for the attempted arson, never mind protestors from the convoy, you seem to have more information than the Canadian police at the moment so if you have information contact the Ottawa Police Arson unit at ext 4587 or 3771 or leave an email at arson@ottawapolice.ca

The violence seems to be going largely unreported, I googled Canada Convoy violence and got a story about a man setting off a smoke-bomb and another lunatic driving into the protestors.

"Paramedics asked for police escorts over the weekend after at least two ambulances were pelted with rocks and protesters who appeared to be part of the truck convoy" - Appeared to be, so no evidence they actually were part of the protest or just scummers looking for an easy target.

Seems even more peaceful than the mostly peaceful BLM ones. Fair play to the Canadians.

As mentioned the Finns tried it, but their trucks were owned the companies so they did it in cars and were towed. The New Zealanders tried it but most were unable to get on ferries because.. wait for it.. vaccinate requirements. There have been vaccine mandates in place for e.g. Yellow Fever for decades and I don't remember similar protests over those? Odd.

'Seems even more peaceful than the mostly peaceful BLM ones'

Yes the rioting, burning and looting of 400 cities by BLM was mostly peaceful but not rioting, burning and looting at all is even more peaceful.

Absurd to see posters still using mandatory vaccine requirements for very specific diseases in certain countries as evidence of something or other. As I said the vast majority of countries have not done so on COVID but feel free to continue to consider people who protest about such things stupid.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,177 ✭✭✭Fandymo

Laughable 🤣🤣!! From your link - "Attempt to burn residents alive - unclear who is behind", and "It is unclear if the fire was started by protestors"

Although it does also state, "Thousands of people have been demonstrating in Canadian cities, including the largest city of Toronto. Demonstrations have been mostly peaceful"

    Thanks for backing me up.

    "Very specific diseases"

It's the same principle. People are just stupid and conflate things like wearing a mask during a pandemic with some sort of "assault" on their "freedoms". Likewise vaccine requirements.

Canada has aligned themselves with US rules. Mexico has not, but US rules mean Mexican trucks coming into the US must have a vaccinated driver. It seems to be working OK there. And of course every airline passenger flying into the US must be vaccinated, and also produce a clear recent test. A very big majority of Canadian truckers are vaccinated, and do not support what this minority is doing.

Vaccine mandate has varied impacts on Mexico cross-border trucking

New regulations banning unvaccinated truckers from crossing the U.S.-Mexico border have strained an already tight driver market, said Gerardo Alanis Barrios, CEO of Cold Chain Solutions in Laredo, Texas.

The U.S. on Jan. 22 began imposing COVID-19 vaccine requirements on all non-U.S. individuals entering the country at land ports of entry — notably along the Canadian and Mexican borders.

“Drayage capacity has been strained for the better part of two years. The vaccine mandate has come to dent it even more,” Barrios told FreightWaves.

Barrios and other members of his family operate a group of companies unofficially called Grupo Alanis in Laredo and just across the border in Nuevo Laredo, Mexico. The companies include transportation, cold storage, drayage, customs and logistics operations.

The U.S. allows Mexican trucks, called drayage trucks, to travel short distances northbound into the U.S. (generally a 25-mile zone) to drop off loads. The drayage trucking industry along the U.S.-Mexico border has hundreds of companies transporting supplies and finished products back and forth across the border daily.

In our fleet, about 4% of our drivers have refused to get vaccinated,” Alanis Barrios said. “Some argue they can’t get it because of medical conditions, while others simply don’t want unknown substances in their bodies. A few have gone so far as to ask for other jobs within the company to support their decision.”

Luis García, head of carrier relations at Nuvocargo, said the company saw a few northbound shipments in Mexico that were delayed heading to the U.S. after the vaccine requirements took effect.

Nice of you to pop out of Conspiracy theories to add one of your own here.

Why not post evidence of these stone throwing instances? A random article written by a random student might not cut it.

While we are waiting here is a Calgary police officers view

For the 100th time I don't support these anti-vaxxers, but I don't have any issue with the peaceful protests.

It's the blockages and disruption and cases of violence. Likewise when "Insulate Britain" blocked the motorways in the UK, completely unacceptable, I don't care what their cause is.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,132 ✭✭✭✭is_that_so

Not at all the same. COVID will just become another respiratory background disease that will emerge in winter like flu' and a proportion of people will get vaccinated against it. We won't care what status they have. The background to this Canadian mandate is 80% fully vaccinated and 85% with one shot, which is higher than ours. Their cases are now at 90K a WEEK and falling so the hardline approach here really makes very little sense given that it may all be gone in 4-6 weeks.

Nice of the exact same handful of conspiracy theorists and anti-vaxxers and anti-lockdown types to flock to every one of these threads without fail, remarkable coincidence that ;)

Have posted news links already to those incidents, feel free to read and minimize.

The disease is rampant in the USA, which made the rule which foreigners have to adhere to.

I do, it's in the thread, two news sources. If you are too lazy to read the thread, not my problem.

There was a trucker on an Ottowan radio phone in on Sunday..Claimed he was doing it for not just himself, but for the freedom of everyone..It was all about freedom.

A mother phoned in and asked him to leave Ottowa as the honking noise is terrifing her children..Their clothes reeked of fuel.

Trucker asks what wrong with her ..tells her its her own fault and people shouldn't be allowed bring kids up in the city...so much for his fight for everyones freedom

Except that it was Canada who made it mandatory for truckers arriving into Canada to be vaccinated. Meanwhile some provinces are looking to relax restrictions.

Yes, as we've seen from the last 2 years, the anti-vaxxers, anti-maskers and anti-lockdown types are known for their concern about others in society. Truly selfless people.

Unlike the "mostly peaceful" other protests which were widely backed on here.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,120 ✭✭✭✭Dohnjoe

Right now, protesters are blocking a key border crossing between the US and Canada, this is impacting businesses and supply lines. Forget what they are protesting, do you think fully blocking motorways and border crossings is okay, yes or no?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,177 ✭✭✭Fandymo

Once they do it within the law. Break the law get punished. Don't break the law, work away.

So you think these truck-drivers blocking the border should all be punished. Pretty harsh, but got it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,177 ✭✭✭Fandymo

If they are breaking the law. I can't see anything online about them illegally blocking any border. Like most of your claims, there's nothing to back it up. 10/10 for the active imagination though.

The Windsor Police say the protestors are involved in illegal activity, but are taking a softly softly approach for the time being.

    https://www.police.windsor.on.ca/newsroom/news-update/february/Pages/February-8-2022-Update-1.aspx

The Windsor Police Service has maintained communications with main organizers but we want to urge those involved in illegal activity not to endanger members of the public or first responders, including police personnel, and jeopardize public peace. Those found committing crimes and acts of violence will be investigated and charges will be laid. This includes enforcement of traffic related offences and investigating any criminal acts. This also includes police personnel considering waiting for a lower-risk opportunity to arrest offenders rather than inflame a situation.

Great to see people power working. Saskatchewan announcing they’ll lift all restrictions. Alberta and Quebec saying they’ll start winding down restrictions too.
