He'd have made a great "Moose Malloy" when young, but the ultimate villains in Marlowe novels tend to let their henchmen do the dirty work.

Who would you pick as Marlowe?

Marlowe was described in the books as over 6 foot, could handle himself in a fight but was more than just muscle. I thought Powers Boothe in the 80s TV version was the right age and profile. In colour blind casting Danny Glover was good in the Red Wind adaptation as part of Fallen Angels series.

Robert Mitchum was getting on when he played him. Elliott Gould played him for laughs. Bogart was great but he was Bogart as much as he was Marlowe.

I know can handle himself in a fight but I meant I never pictured him as looking like he could.

Or it seems I have forgetter his description - maybe memory has me picturing Humphrey Bogart rather than the character described in the books.

Bogart was the best Marlowe and yes he had that personality and wit.

I never really liked the other adaptations that took Marlowe out of his time period.

I didn’t know about the Powers Booth TV show and hadn’t heard of Fallen Angels before - I would like to to see those.

Neil Jordan. Wow, there's a name I haven't heard in years. Was fairly high profile for a while, especially in this part of the world as a local director done good (plus his directing of Michael Collins). I see he still kept busy enough.

A sequel to The long Goodbye.....didnt even realise one had been written. The long Goodbye (the film)by Robert altman is probably my favourite film of all time. Elliot Gould was hilarious and never better. Hope this movie is halfway decent

I think this will be more like the novels than the Altman movie so I wouldnt expect much overlap.

But if you like Elliott Gould in that kind of role keep an eye out for - The Silent Partner 1978.

I'd never even heard of that. Will definitely give it a go, thanks.

Michael Mann is putting together a stellar cast for his passion project biopic of Enzo Ferrari.

Adam Driver as Enzo, Penelope Cruz Enzo's wife and Shailene Woodley as Enzo's mistress.

It will be Mann's first film since Blackhat 7 years ago,

This is one I would que for a huge Michael Mann fan and I still say Manhunter was the best Hannibal Lecter film and Brian Cox was the Hannibal Lecter

He also has a TV series Tokyo Vice coming out this year on HBO Max.

His TV show Crime Story still ranks as one for the best shows of it's day for me.

Great to have an active Mann back.

It's complicated, but Variety are reporting that movie, gaming, live events, and merchandising rights to JRR Tolkien's work are going up for sale. $2Bn is the price being touted. The article mentions live events which includes theme parks, so I guess Disney would have a hard on for this? Ugh.

Oh dear god no. Don't even joke about DIsney scooping up another major IP. Though given they have a show in the fire ATM, Amazon might be looking at $2 billion and think it chump change.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 61,272 ✭✭✭✭Agent Coulson

My guess if it really is up for sale Amazon will buy it considering the money they are pumping into the series 2 billion is nothing to them.

Looks like Netflix bought the rights to the long-in-limbo Adaptation of Bioshock; no writer or director attached but hopefully this doesn't get lowballed, I'd call this one of the stronger video game settings and stories.

2021 was a good year for the Irish TV & Film industry

Ireland Attracts Record €500M Film & TV Production Spend In 2021

Ireland saw a record-breaking €500M ($570M) production spend across film, television drama, documentary and animation in 2021, according to new figures released by national agency Screen Ireland.

That figure tops the previous record set in 2019 by a mammoth 40%.

Naturally, 2020 figures were lower due to the pandemic, which continued to disrupt production well into 2021, but not enough to stop the sector reaching a new high watermark.

As is happening in the UK, international spend is driving the figures. Such production activity, including Disney’s Disenchanted which filmed on location in Dublin and Wicklow, was up 45% in 2021.

However, local Irish production was also on the rise, increasing 52% from 2019 to 2021. Recent projects include Nocebo, Joyride, Aisha and God’s Creatures.

Irish animation is also on the up, continuing a decade of growth. Recent animated projects include feature film Tea for the Dead and TV series Lady Bird Liu.

On the TV side, spend has increased 145% since Screen Ireland introduced development funding for TV drama in 2015. Upcoming projects include Holding based on Graham Norton’s novel, Smother, The Dry and Redemption.

“This record-breaking level of film and TV production in Ireland demonstrates the dedication and resilience of all those working across the sector,” said Desiree Finnegan, Ireland Chief Executive. “Despite immense challenges, the producers, directors, writers, cast and crew continued creating world-class stories to entertain audiences at home and abroad. Throughout 2021 Screen Ireland supported Ireland’s vital national cinema, increased investment in high-end TV drama, embraced innovation in the animation sector and continued excellence in documentary production.”

Just found out they are rebooting The Toxic Avenger with Peter Dinklage as The Toxic Avenger.

I wonder how many Troma movies are now fit for rebooting.

Another how the hell did I not know this exist a musical remake version of Misery

    Julie Ganapathi

Julie Ganapathi is a 2003 Indian Tamil-language psychological thriller film written, photographed, edited and directed by Balu Mahendra, starring Saritha, Jayaram and Ramya Krishnan. The film is based on the 1987 Stephen King novel Misery. Featuring music composed by Ilaiyaraaja, the film opened to positive reviews in February 2003.

If it's not made for a really low budget, can it even be called a Troma movie? 😃

Can't imagine the few fans of the Toxic Avenger were exactly crying out for a mainstream Hollywood reboot. Kinda defeats the point somewhat.

Read about that yesterday. I’m really looking forward to it.

I can’t imagine who will play the role though.

On the subject of biopics for the Greats, Stan & Ollie is a beautiful movie - I cannot believe that the movie didn’t get ALL the awards for that that. Coogan and Reilly are excellent and the make up is fantastic.

White Men Can't Jump is the latest reboot.

I remember watching this with my brother years back and he said he didn't like it because it was a bit of a cliché. I tried to explain to him that a lot of the vampire clichés came from this.

I am Legend 2 is on the way with Will Smith returning and Michael B Jordan joining him.

Akiva Goldsman who wrote the first one is back to write this as well.

Well that makes no sense on the face of it; $585 million back in the day but hardly a cultural giant demanding a sequel. Nor did the original story given how it ended - indeed ignoring the whole thrust of I Am Legend the novel 🙄😁

it looks like a box office flop in the making especially if its an expensive movie to make. Zombie flix are done.

Noah Hawley's Alien TV series isn't the only xenomorph in town: it's reported that a completely standalone film is coming from Fede Alvarez (Don't Breathe), who'll write and direct. Supposedly it'll have no connection to the previous films.

Well who knew the greatest film ever made is coming soon

Bruce Willis reportedly suffering from short-term memory loss, and has been doing as many films as he can to earn money for his family while he can. Hence why his output has been dodgy in the past few years.

Hard to know if it's completely true, but the article sources a director of four of his recent films, so certainly could be. Very sad if true.
