The Czech song isn't a winner but a great listen. My favourite so far and on my playlist.

Fun fact: If you're familiar with NHL ice hockey, the vocalist Dominika Hašková is the daughter of Hall of Fame goalkeeper Dominik Hašek.

Semi-Final Allocation Draw today at 11am Irish time. Looking forward to finding out who Brooke's SF competition will be.

  • Registered Users Posts: 925 ✭✭✭Amik

We were drawn last from the pots. Ireland closing Semi Final 2!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33,314 ✭✭✭✭gmisk

People seem to be saying this is a really good draw?

Fingers crossed we send something decent! (Hopefully thats rich...if it's good live)

Ireland will be in second half of Semi 2 but won't necessarily closing the show. The precise running order within each half of the semis is determined by the producers after all songs have been chosen, so that similar sounding songs aren't bunched together. Also they generally like to end with an upbeat song, so if Ireland chooses a ballad then it's very unlikely to be last.

The Czech song is in same half, that would be the type of song the producers like to close with.

  • Registered Users Posts: 925 ✭✭✭Amik

Yes you're right, my mistake! Too bad as it seems countries in that position (except last year with Denmark) have qualified consistently all the way back to 2010. Jedward had it in 2011.

  • Registered Users Posts: 494 ✭✭LordBasil

A really benign draw for Ireland!! As soon as the Big 5 Draw for voting was done I wanted Ireland to get SF2 as the UK, Germany & Spain are voting in that semi, who are historically more generous towards us than France & Italy.

When she was picking the last country for SF1 and Ireland & Netherlands were left in Pot 6 I was overjoyed when I saw the Dutch flag being unveiled. I knew then we were getting SF2 😁 even better we then got 2nd Half 😁😁

I am not sure who I want to win LLS Eurosong. I am surprised Janet is the current favourite with the bookies. Brooke is probably our best shot. I think people maybe overlooking Miles Graham as I feel his song might come alive during the live performance. The only song I really dislike is Brendan's, although I'm not a huge fan of Patrick's song either. Rachel's song is my guilty pleasure but I know she's chanceless 😞

    Roll on 4th February!!

I don't get why that Janet Grogan song would be the favourite? Maybe that is taking into account the LLS slightly older audience?

After 1000 votes in Wiwibloggs' Irish poll, Brooke is on the heels of 50%. They've even interviewed her already. Seems like a nice girl I'd enjoy chatting with in a pub.

  • Registered Users Posts: 494 ✭✭LordBasil

Yeah, I was shocked by that. People might be assuming wrong as the LLS audience voted for Sinead Mulvey, Jedward (twice!), Ryan Dolan & Kasey Smith over the ballads they were up against so Brooke has a strong chance. It is going to be interesting to see if there will be big discrepancies between the national juries, international juries & the audience vote. We might be in for a shock result.....

Very interesting that there's international juries this year, a step in the right direction I think (well as long as none of those clowns from Wiwibloggs are involved). Has the breakdown between public/jury votes been revealed? I'm guessing 50% public vote, 25% Irish juries and 25% International juries.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 835 ✭✭✭dogcat

I believe it's 33% each. And international juries really depend. They can be great or horrid.

Will russia Put in an entry this year? Ukraine may cause an issue this year perhaps.

Our 4th and 5th songs were picked tonight

    Moldova

Remember 'grandmamma beats the drums'? It's these guys! Finished 6th in 2005 and and 12th in 2011. Somehow I don't think they'll be repeating those feats this time around.

    Spain

I think this is good, but will it really stand out enough on the night? Got Eleni Foureira vibes from the dance routine too.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,282 ✭✭✭CruelSummer

Did anyone see what Spain did this year? Some kind of Benidorm fest? Wish Ireland could modernise the way we pick the Eurovision song - why is it on the Late Late Show? Audience, wrong. Format, wrong. Tubridy as a Eurosong host, wrong, wrong, wrong.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,282 ✭✭✭CruelSummer

Ireland is full to the brim of musical talents. There is no way the only talent we could muster involves Nicki Byrne, Brendan Murray, etc. RTÉ is a mess with our Eurovision entries - another bland bunch. It will all depend on live vocal on the night - send the best performer. I wouldn’t put my money on that being the Brooke song…poor chorus.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,272 ✭✭✭RoTelly

Listing to the 6 Irish entries I feel that RTÉ didn't watch last years eurovision. Basing it on last year alone none of the Irish options have a chance to even get to the final. IMO.

    Running Order for LLS Eurosong;

    1. Patrick
    2. Janet
    3. Brendan
    4. Miles
    5. Rachel
    6. Brooke

Above was drawn at random, positions have been confirmed by contestants on their social media pages. Not sure if it will matter much with only 6 songs but doesn't hurt Brooke's chances.

Great to see that it's on the late late as that's proven to be a winning formula in the past, best to stick with the tried and trusted.

    😐

Brooke last could be good...will be fresh in voters memory hope she is good live!

  • Registered Users Posts: 925 ✭✭✭Amik

Sanremo kicked off last night. Entries quite weak compared to last year in my opinion.

This is how I imagine my Sanremo performance would look like...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,239 ✭✭✭saabsaab

Have Russia picked a song yet?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,272 ✭✭✭RoTelly

In fairness you might actually be in with a chance of getting to the final. Good luck next year.

The Irish selection will be tonight. Anyone have any idea of how much a vote'll cost?

  • Registered Users Posts: 8,239 ✭✭✭Pussyhands

Brookes song is terrible. Rachel Goodes is the best of a bad lot.

  • Registered Users Posts: 8,239 ✭✭✭Pussyhands

Just realised Patrick O'Sullivan is the lad who won Last Singer Standing....so that's why Nicky Byrne is involved...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,272 ✭✭✭RoTelly

So if you have 200 or so entries and you choosing them blind.... and it just happens that a presenter RTÉ seem to be forcing on the public happens to be involved in a TV show where the winner ends up being the singer of the song he wrote goes forward for the national song contest.... what are the odds?

I think it is excellent (well compared to the rest) no idea if it will be good live.

The Rachel Goode song is utterly horrendous...it is the same songwriters as another Eurovision song called the ride....it sounds really similar and bombed in the semis...so would this if we picked it imo

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33,314 ✭✭✭✭gmisk

    Sure it's a pure coincidence....lol.

I think 320+ entries...the just happen to pick one Nicky Byrne involved in....lol...in fairness the other writers are the guy from the coronas and a lad from all Tvvins (who actually would be a decent act to send to Eurovision)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 823 ✭✭✭Liberty_Bear

To be honest Brookes song is the strongest

There were stronger songs in the national selection pool (Jedward and the high Kings)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 823 ✭✭✭Liberty_Bear

I think out of the songs so far Spain have a strong contender

    Anyone watching San Remo tomorrow?>

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 7,533 Mod ✭✭✭✭yerwanthere123

I can't see Spain doing much to be honest. By the end of March we'll surely have two or three similar, superior songs that'll be tapping into the same market. I'm guessing they'll finish something like 10th in the televote and 18th with juries for a 16th position overall.

Mahmood & Blanco the heavy favourites to win San Remo

It's basically the polar opposite of Soldi. Somehow I don't predict a similar result if it gets picked.

Czech Republic still have the best song in this admittedly early stage of the competition.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33,314 ✭✭✭✭gmisk

Did they enter this year? How did you manage to hear them?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 823 ✭✭✭Liberty_Bear

Got asked to do a preliminary listen of some of the entries of people I know entering songs

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,282 ✭✭✭CruelSummer

In a tried and trusted formula to make sure Ireland bomb the Eurovision, the Late Late Show will take a trip down memory lane, we’ll have Ryan Tubridy reminisce with the Eurovision stars of the past about the glory days. Some of the past hits will be played in the studio with audience sing alongs…

Then we’ll listen to the 6 finalists from this year & wonder where did it all go wrong. There won’t be any discussion about current Eurovision acts or even successful artists from the last decade that have won or finished in the top 10. One will be picked and that will be that.

I hope I’m wrong - a strong live vocalist is needed this year for any of the songs to sound respectable. Tbh some of these vocalists should come back next year with better songs. Rachel Goode seems like a great singer as is Janet Grogan and Patrick O’Sullivan but my goodness I cannot stand the Goode song, it’s terrible,

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,675 ✭✭✭✭ACitizenErased

I think Miles Graham's song has the most personality to be honest. It's the only one that will catch the Eurovision eye.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 7,533 Mod ✭✭✭✭yerwanthere123

I agree, yet most rankings have it dead last 😬

That might be the case but its not a fit for Eurovision

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,282 ✭✭✭CruelSummer

Hope to see Janet Grogan, Rachel Goode and Patrick O’Sullivan back with other entries.

Rachel should definitely go for what Australia did one year - mix classical / Modern music, you could even do an Irish haunting beginning like in Riverdance, or a modern Niamh Quinn The Voice.

Norway also did very well with a song mixing Norwegian / modern music recently:

Janet Grogan is another strong vocalist, she did the best job delivering her song to the public last night hands down. If she was given a stronger melody, it would definitely have a chance to get out of the Semi.

Patrick O’Sullivan - very good vocalist. Hated the song, poor melody, didn’t like the choreography either.

Overall a positive step forward - next year live from the Helix would make a big difference to the performers and give the songs a live performance to a big crowd.

Brooke’s song has catchy segments, her whole look, image is an absolute disaster & I don’t think anyone ‘got it’. Her Spotify clips have her looking like a Duo Lipa twin and then she comes out like an Oompa Loompa dressed in disgusting pyjamas on the Late Late Show - needs major work or it doesn’t have a chance of getting out of the semi.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,765 ✭✭✭endofrainbow

Well that was a complete s* show . She really needs a style counsellor - shiny pj's, pigtails and cyndi lauper make-up? Song was poor and her vocals shaky at best....

  • Registered Users Posts: 925 ✭✭✭Amik

If Brooke dresses the same on the Eurovision stage she'll win the Barbara Dex Award for worst dressed. When Marty interviewed her in the green room opening and I let out a loud "Oh nooo!". She reminded me of the pajama people I see in Dunnes sometimes, so the most culturally relevant song of the night. :P Brooke moves well and I like that thing she does with her hand during "Bye Bye Boy".

It won't win us Eurovision but the song is fun and catchy enough to get us to the final. Bonus that Brooke has a great personality that will make her a media darling in Turin.

I'm rarely impressed by RTE but they put on a good show last night!

I was very happy to see Rachel Goode do so well with the public vote. Fingers crossed she'll try again in the coming years. So confident on stage and oozes star potential. Best outfit of the night, too.

The song was just way too Swedish for me: I thought my stream switched to Melodifestivalen!! Even the face close up camera work and wind machine were straight out of Stockholm.

She needs to come back with something pop-y again but Irish made and makes better use of her lovely soprano voice.

I really like the gentleman in 2nd place: 77 years old! Won the best cover song last night ahead of Mahmood & Blanco.

Here's his San Remo entry “Apri tutte le porte”. Doesn't get more Italian than this *revs his Vespa*.

Are we excited for San Remo tonight?

Im cynical, Mahmood and Blanco are playing up the Bromance element to sell to us gays ! Albeit the song is mediocre but they can sing it well. There is a song in the Israeli selection called 'Im' by David Ben Cohen , could 'occupy' the charts (pun intentional). Spain have a really upped their game but catching up with Chanel.

The second place in Albania is fantastic, should won.

Should we ask for a seperate Eurovision forum?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 823 ✭✭✭Liberty_Bear

It would require an absolute banger. Gravity was a great song and the mixture of classical vs EDM worked quite well. I would be more in favour of something new age along the lines of Harem by Sarah Brightman. Not with a break for classical but an oepratic voice over a floor filler of a melody.

Its nice to be able to nerd out with fellow Eurovision fans

Other stuff picked over the weekend. North Macedonia on Friday night before Brooke, followed by both Israel and Italy on Saturday night.

    North Macedonia

    Israel

    Italy

Haven't actually listened to them all yet, but all I can say for now is I don't think Italy will be defending their crown!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,725 ✭✭✭✭AndyBoBandy

I'm sorry but that song will get nowhere the final, it's abysmal... even by our standards....

Semi-Final: Last place. mark my words.
