I would imagine, that if this came out in 2001/02 for the GBA it would have melted faces.

That is an incredible port of the game.

Just to be clear, this is what Tomb Raider actually looked like on the GBA

Between this and that Sunset Rider Megadrive port in the works, it just goes to show what these machines really are capable of with a bit of time an ingenuity.

They both feel like there's a dusting of black magic going on.

Watched the MVG on the same yesterday, really impressive on the GBA

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,885 ✭✭✭Steve X2

The dev did a great job squeezing that onto the GBA! I know its based on OpenLara, but he would've had to do some serious optimisations to get the performance in that vid.

Open Lara in a browser for those that haven't seen it.

Must look into how they figured it out. The original Tomb Raider is a Quad rendered game so the GBA with it's insane sprite pushing capability and 32 bit processor would actually be a perfect fit for a port of the PC and Saturn Quad code.

Crazy to see these games I remember as tech showcases as a kid running on a browser now.

I finished the original Tomb Raider a few months ago and it still holds up and a much better game than TR2 and 3 (not played much of the following core design games).

I had Tomb Raider as a pack-in with one of the earliest graphics cards, Rendition Verite V1000.

Tomb Raider went from looking like a Saturn game to looking incredible.

I've an old GBA flash cart, I must get TR onto it and give it a whirl.

Yeah I got it with my Power VR 2. The Power VR2 version was the best version of the original TR with loads of fancy effects that aren't in any other version but it's the 3Dfx versions that are currently available. Would love to have the gorgeous Power VR water effects back in the game. I haven't been able to find decent footage of this version of the game.

I'm not too up on the tomb raider stuff but those mega drive ports really show how much the hardware can be pushed when there's passion and skill involved

Recently followed this guy on Instagram. Makes mega drive repros and hacks. But all stuff is custom and the actual games are tweaked. Check the Castlevania, just a colour enhanced version of the original but it looks fantastic

They look really great - kudos to him for using different cart shells to distinguish them from the real deal.

What are his prices like? Wouldn't mind picking a couple of them up.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,790 ✭✭✭Jack burton

That Castlevania is $50 shipped in the USA. Pretty good I think.

My wife heading over there in march so planning on getting one or two and have her bring them home....Tax free

She'll need to get a Sega Mega Jet just to complete the lie.

'Oh these games? These are just for playing on my obscure Japanese console on the flight, see?'

Data Discs are releasing the Shadow Dancer soundtrack, I must give it a play as I never put much time into it.

Debating picking up the repress of Revenge of Shinobi. Haven't played it as much as Shinobi 3 as I found it quite difficult. I watched a speedrun of 3 recently and saw some interesting moves, must find one for Revenge of Shinobi to help get me through it. I've definitely spent more time listening to the soundtrack than I have playing the game!

The Revenge of Shinobi is absolutely brilliant. Was one of the first games I ever got for my Megadrive - I actually wanted Shinobi III (was fascinated by the horse levels in an ad I saw for it) and was secretly a little disappointed as a kid when I opened my pressie to find The Revenge Of... I've both games now but still much prefer it over III.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 51,821 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

Yeah I much prefer revenge. It is a difficult game but it's very rewarding.

I never could get the good ending though and that final maze stage can **** off.

As a matter of interest, did you figure out the infinite shuriken cheat on your own?

I actually remember the day it happened as I think it was one of the first cheats I ever actually came across in a videogame. Was playing about in the menu, set the shuriken count to zero, left it for a little bit and then that sound and the zero turned into a 'weird looking sideways 8'.

From then on I don't think as a kid I ever played it without the cheat on, kind of felt like I wasn't cheating too as I found it by myself hah.

I have since finished it without the cheat. Really does make you use your double jump/rain down shuriken attacks a lot more strategically when you're actually worried about them running out!

Well here's an interesting little bit of info I've never heard of. In the 'Sega Smash Pack' released on the PC, they mistakenly included an unfinished prototype rather than the final game.

There was actually some other code in it not in the final game, like bits from a Shinobi mini game

Or a different 'bad ending' where Joe dies

Good catch! That is exactly my old one which I sold last year for €800. The emails they're talking about in it would be the ones I sent to Jeff to confirm everything was legit.

Some markup! Had it up on ebay for ages with no luck at all.

A new Shenmue anime, what the feck!

    https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.polygon.com/platform/amp/22889939/shenmue-anime-crunchyroll-adult-swim

I am guessing 3-4 episodes will be dedicated to driving a forklift.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,962 ✭✭✭Mr.Saturn

You’d think the tepid reception to Shenmue 3 would’ve killed the franchise off for good, but here we are. It’s mad to think the kind of reaction this announcement would’ve garnered 10 years versus the general ‘the f**k?….’ it’s getting now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 898 ✭✭✭dav09

As it should be, honestly the Fork-Lift action in Shenmue 1 makes the game for me, the morning race and missions in the port, I can imagine how they could adapt it as it's a real story-heavy based game.

Is Shenmue 3 really that bad? Haven't played it yet as there's no Xbox release and my gaming PC is prob too old now to run it, want to give it a try but afraid of it not living up to the previous two masterpieces. I'm glad they originals got a re-release but this remake would have been brilliant if it came to fruition, unfortunately, Sega scrapped it

Yeah that's the exact reason I haven't played it myself, only have an Xbox One and my PC won't run it.

I do have that free copy ready to go that was posted on here a little while back - am toying with the idea of a gaming laptop over the coming month so might finally get around to giving it a go then!

Didn't realise it was meant to be so bad, although I am hoping that's down to reviewers maybe not 'getting' Shenmue...

Jaysus, don't let Retr0 hear you say that, he tormented me for years until I bought RGBs for everything!

I mean, do you know how hard it is to get the PS4 to output via RF to a 55" TV?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,725 ✭✭✭The Last Bandit

    The Retro 2X devices?

They're pretty decent and from my messing around they are all the same with just a different cable so I changed the input side to a SCART socket and plug whatever I want into it :)

Has anyone any idea where I'd grab a Raspberry Pi Zero 2 W? Seems to be out of stock or heavily inflated prices everywhere....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,885 ✭✭✭Steve X2

It really sucks the mark-up that they have at the moment. I grabbed a couple of the Zero 2 W boards the morning they were launched(like 30 mins after the announcement) and by the next day people were putting them up on ebay for silly money.

Maybe try here, seems to be okay price and is 1 per customer, no idea if it's a trustworthy site though but seems good on Trustpilot

Tell me about it. I've a beast of a PC build going the last 9 months as I just cant get parts. Or don't fancy spending 2-3k on parts that have an msrp of 1k. And then the parts i wanted are outdated, so have to rejig the build idea in my head.

Pain in the arsticles it is!

That's not a bad price considering.

I've pretty much given up on trying to upgrade my 1070-based PC now as a result of the shortage.

I chanced it Dav, thanks for that. They accept PayPal so I figure I'm fairly safe

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,755 ✭✭✭Inviere

Aye. I bumped my 1070 up to a 1080Ti there, but still chugging along with a 7700K. To be fair I'm not asking much of it, haven't really played a demanding pc game in a good while. I'll wait another bit.

There’s a bit of FOMO for me!

Although Ray tracing looks great at 30fps consoles, would love to see it on PC.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 51,821 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

Honestly ray tracing adds very little I find after the initial wow factor of seeing yourself in a reflection. It's definitely the future but we aren't quite there yet but it's also not that big a jump over traditional rasterised rendering. Rasterised rendering has become really good at faking it. When you are actually playing the game there's really not much difference between SSR reflections and Ray Tracing. Shadows and AO do look a lot more natural but again it's not a game changer for me.

Maybe I'm just bitter I had to go for a 6900 XT and not the 3080 I was after.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Arts Moderators, Computer Games Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 29,709 CMod ✭✭✭✭johnny_ultimate

I actually just upgraded to an i7-12700k and 3070 (pre-built, alas, as I needed a PC quickly), from an ancient CPU and a 2060 Super. Ray-tracing is fine, but I definitely don't see it as as transformative to the experience as, say, Digital Foundry do (Alex in particular :P). DLSS is incredible though - the amount of performance that can claw back with barely any visible hit to fidelity is really fecking impressive.

But as I said elsewhere, I think the next-gen consoles are a really competitive proposition to PC at the moment. Games like Returnal or Ratchet & Clank look truly incredible on a good 4K TV - there are few games on PC putting out that level of sheer fidelity. Alas, the availability problems are very real.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,029 ✭✭✭Colonel Panic

    Those comments are somewhat reassuring!

I’m happy enough I snagged a PS5 last year, albeit digital when I wanted one with disks so I could ditch my PS4.

Its definitely got some jaw dropping looking games!

I wish it supported 1440p and VRR though! That would be the icing on the cake.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,790 ✭✭✭Jack burton

That's just a link at the end of my cart.

That price is just for the standard scart cables.
