For hurling Our Game is my favourite personally followed by Anthony Daly's podcast on the Irish Examiner.

Our game Stapleton and verney.very good

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,263 ✭✭✭big_drive

Yeah both of those are excellent. The lads involved all know their stuff

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 855 ✭✭✭Deskjockey

I really liked the GAA Hour with Colm Parkinson ( Wooly) this year. He has just left it to start something new in 2022.

A hurlers life is great also, a different kind of show

Off the ball put clips up on Spotify of their GAA coverage, always good to listen to Tommy Walsh talking about the game he loves

  • Registered Users Posts: 60 ✭✭quidel7

From a Gaelic football perspective, The GAA Hour with Colm Parkinson was the best of the lot for me. The Irish Examiner can be very good too particularly when Oisin McConville is on.

After that it’s probably the Football Pod with Paddy & Andy. If you were from Ulster the BBC’s The GAA Social was excellent I thought, but no episodes for a few months unfortunately.

RTÉ’s GAA podcasts definitely are miles behind the above. Too many producers speaking and overused guests. Badly need to improve their offering.

Wooly's new one is called "smaller fish" . First episode Jan 10th.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 855 ✭✭✭Deskjockey

    Our game excellent as well

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 855 ✭✭✭Deskjockey

A bit too much horse racing chat at times on Dalos Examiner one (have zero interest in horses) , but still a good listen overall

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,131 ✭✭✭Billy Ocean

Wonder if GAA hour will continue with a new presenter.

  • Registered Users Posts: 20 urban_nudist

Anyone give this a listen yet? The same as GAA hour or better/worse?

Can't really see what he can do different, hopefully he can get the regular contributors to move with him, Paul Murphy Paddy Stapleton and Brian Carroll are brilliant hurling pundits

It's the same as the GAA hour and I think many pundits will be moving with him. Paddy Stapleton was on yesterday's show

Just on the GAA Hour that twitter account hasn't posted since December so they must be quietly killing it.

Joe.ie are in a bad financial state so I'd say they couldn't afford to keep Wooly moreso than a falling out. One of Joe's other big names Dion Fanning left in 2021

  • Registered Users Posts: 20 urban_nudist

Had no complaints about the GAA Hour so more than happy for it to stay the same. Surprised Joe has made it this far tbh, surviving the clickfarming saga at the parent company was not something I expected. Outside of GAA hour I'd no use for JOE myself

Listened to both of Woolys pods( joys of working from home) Paddy Stapleton and Niall Rigney for hurling and Conan Doherty and Cian Ward for football, both were decent and basically GAA hour 2.0.

Noticed by their conversations they were recorded Sunday evening rather than Monday, hopefully they'll move it onto YouTube too, Spotify is fine for me but not my father who is 78 in April. I can see they've an interview with Rob Kearney up today.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,263 ✭✭✭big_drive

Listened to all the new shows. Same thing, different name is basically it expect for the Rob Kearney one. That one is a nice addition actually if he gets decent guests. It's more of a one on one interview about their gaa career and other bits.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 38,886 ✭✭✭✭PTH2009

The Backdoor GAA podcast is decent but the guy presenting it has a very low speaking voice (as do i) and can be a little frustrating sometimes but the content is good. God help when Mark Foley is on it he has let's just say a boring voice (nothing against the man)

Wollys podcast and Anthony Dalys are enjoyable too

Was involved in some career retrospectives with players during the year on a podcast know as "The Clash Act"

From about episode from about episode 6 onwards we started finding our Grove and interviewed

    - Kilkenny hurlers Eddie Brennan, Noel Hickey, Brian Hogan, PJ Ryan, Paul Murphy, Peter Cleere, Eoin Larkin, John Mulhall, Michael Rice, Eddie Keher , Denise Gaule and Richie Power

-Waterford’s Dan Shanahan & former manager Derek McGrath,

-Roscommon’s Frankie Dolan, Westmeath player John Connellan,

    - Carlow’s Marty Kavanagh Niall Carew & Brian Tracey,

    - Referees Brian Gavin & David Gough,

Corks Larry Tompkins, Gakways Micheál Donoghue, Eugene Cloonan and Kevin Walsh or Offalys Michael Duignan.

We had to take a break during September but looking to start back up in Febuary with some good guests lined up.

Mulhalls interview was probably my favourite

Another lesser known hurling podcast is ‘Lovely Hurling’ hosted by Anthony Nash and Dan Shanahan. They haven’t posted since after the All Ireland but hopefully they’ll be back.

I find it excellent too, he'll ask an interesting question but it sounds like a 12 year old asking it. Needs to work on delivery but the host is very knowledgeable and the guests he has on it every week do bounce off each other well.

  • Registered Users Posts: 303 ✭✭cantwbr1

I really like the examiner football podcast. I think that Paul Rouse is very good and I like Oisin McConville too (marmite I know).

Last year he had Micky Harte was on with McConville and you could feel the tension between the two of them. Brilliant

Not as keen on the hurling version. Too much non hurling chat

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,263 ✭✭✭big_drive

I came across this one by accident but loved it. Listened to almost every episode. Found them excellent, good length and interesting questions

Woolys new podcast series is going behind a pay wall from February.

  • Registered Users Posts: 530 ✭✭✭C4000

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,131 ✭✭✭Billy Ocean

Heard him talking about it, i enjoy his podcasts but I'd say his views around Covid would turn off some possible sponsors.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,921 ✭✭✭deisedude

    Thought the same.

I like the podcast but he comes across as an immature numpty on Twitter with his carry on

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,700 ✭✭✭thesultan

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 908 ✭✭✭munsterdevil

I’m not into horse racing at all, but it’s banter between 3 friends and good craic. I like it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 908 ✭✭✭munsterdevil

He’s going for a particular pay wall audience alright …

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,131 ✭✭✭Billy Ocean

Looks like Our Game could be going the paywall route too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,140 ✭✭✭PeggyShippen

Yes the Irish examiner podcast is very good..probably could do with someone younger and a female voice aswell would be nice to hear. The horsey stuff is irrelevant to me . I like Marc Landers and TJ is very level headed.

Stapleton and Verney are a hard listen. Verneys accent is a hard listen for me and he doesnt know much about Munster hurling .

Stapletons Tipperary bias is quiet OTT. When he found out Cahill had turned them down it was 'must watch' TV. The sense of entitlement was hilarious.

Wooly I like. I like his twitter musings aswell. Id be more conservative and right wing than most.He trys to ask the hard questions. His knowledge of hurling is poor but he's learning. I ll pay for his podcast in February.

Stapleton and Verney are the most knowledgeable by a good bit in my view.

  • Registered Users Posts: 69 ✭✭CaboRoig

To be fair to him, since he posted that, he's acknowledged that he shouldn't be using his "Smaller Fish" brand for his personal views (which I have to say are annoying as f**k) and has set up his own personal twitter account separately to that one.

I'll probably subscribe next month too. I think his podcast is the best one out there.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 5,014 Mod ✭✭✭✭GoldFour4

Will most likely subscribe to Wooly's podcast from Feb. Whatever about his personal views on Covid, he generally sticks to the GAA for the podcast which are grand with me.

I'll likely unsubscribe for the winter months tbh - I don't watch enough club GAA to be able to listen properly to talk about it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,263 ✭✭✭big_drive

The Irish Examiner, Our Game, Smaller Fish

They're the ones I would always listen to, would have no problem paying for them each month.

I spend a lot of time driving so podcasts I'm interested in are a life saver to pass time

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,338 ✭✭✭keeponhurling

Monday's show is still free, Thursday's is now behind a pay wall. Anyways, 5 euro a month so not too bad.

Our Game feels like it's more for the real GAA anoraks.

The show is quite long, and while they start with the big national stories of the week they'd almost drill down to the Leitrim junior C minor level camogie. They must watch a hell of a lot of GAA, or do a lot of research, to be able to discuss all this in such detail. They're very knowledgeable.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,500 ✭✭✭✭castletownman

Whatever about his accent (which is tough but not Ursula Jacob level of bad), one just has to read Verney's daily predictions during the Cheltenham Festival to see how much of a spoofer he is.

There is knowledge in terms of being able to reel off trivia and remember historic results and stuff like that. And there is a different knowledge entirely in being able to analyse the game. And Verney is in the former camp.

Yeah I agree. Verney is more a statistics man than anything. He writes some awful drivel in the independent. He's got no depth to his knowledge. He's very enthusiastic in fairness

Checked Patreon and not found the ‘Smaller Fish’ podcast to sign up to.🤷‍♂️ Surprised it’s not up yet.

  • Registered Users Posts: 530 ✭✭✭C4000

It'll be available on 1st Feb as far as I know. If he put it up before then people would be charged for January if they signed up.

  • Registered Users Posts: 81 ✭✭paddy13

I agree about Our Game grand listen but Stapleton is very Tipperary (was hilarious when Cahill decided to stay with Waterford). Verney knows a lot of stuff but what he says does not always make sense. In fairness to them not too bad of a podcast.

Irish examiner football is much better podcast. Hurling is alright but I think there is a lot of pub talk.

Woolys would be my favourite too. Easiest to listen to. Both football and hurling.

Paddy and Andy's is replaced with Paddy and James O Donoghue. I liked it this podcast.

Another podcast for hurling is G'day GAA - 3 lads living in Oz - only on during the championship but I liked it.

  • Registered Users Posts: 586 ✭✭✭Treble double

Irish Examiner Football podcat would be my pick. Paul Rouse is a very good, gets the best out of the guests and challenges them with the questions he asks. Like it when Eamonn Fitzmaurice is on, brilliant knowledge of how teams set up. He was excellent on co commentary on Saturday night.

There's zero craic between Fitzmaurice and McConville on the Examiner podcast, it's like they don't like each other.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,131 ✭✭✭Billy Ocean

Arguably Stapleton is more biased towards Dublin in the hurling with the Cuala connections.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,131 ✭✭✭Billy Ocean

Second Captains free podcast today is good with Paul Flynn and Oisin Mcconville, its usually a soccer offering.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,338 ✭✭✭keeponhurling

I don't mind the bias towards one's own county or club.

    Adds to the craic

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 38,886 ✭✭✭✭PTH2009

The paywall podcasts are annoying in terms of apps to listen to them. At least with the free ones you more or likely can get them on Spotify each week and add to a playlist etc

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,921 ✭✭✭deisedude

You should be able to get a unique RSS link and add it to your podcast app of choice but that won't work for Spotify of course

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,263 ✭✭✭big_drive

Smaller Fish as of this morning has had 1,184 sign up since yesterday.

Serious numbers, at €5 per month that's over €70k a year if they all stay signed up.

If anything it will grow by quite a bit yet

  • Registered Users Posts: 304 ✭✭The Guru 123

Is the "Our Game" podcast simply just called that? I can't find it when I search for it on Apple Podcasts

  • Registered Users Posts: 530 ✭✭✭C4000

I wonder how many subscribers he'll need to make it viable. Would each pundit cost a couple of hundred or so per episode?.....plus a salary for himself.....

Hopefully it's successful as it's a very enjoyable show. The new shows he has done since January have been good.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,475 ✭✭✭JustJoe7240

Chances are numbers will drop off, Particularly post championship. Yes, 70k pre tax.

Don't see it on google or spotify either. Full episodes on youtube and twitter.
