As someone already answered for me I’m assuming you have already been educated but in case you missed it, I was referring to the liberal party who are in government at the minute

So you accept that his deportation had nothing to do with public health or his vaccination status and the reason for cancelling his visa was because some people didn't like who he was as a person? Do you think that is some you should be cheering?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,186 ✭✭✭✭jmayo

Why the fook should I give a rats ass about a self entitled arrogant very rich sportsperson, especially one that tried to game the system?

Oh yeah you will trot out some shyte about he was standing for personal freedoms, personal choice, etc.

Bollox he was standing for his own gain pure and simple.

If he cared jack shyte about anyone else he would have come out and said something about all the others that are kept in that hotel and for much longer than him.

If he cared jack shyte about anyone else he wouldn't have met people when he was covid positive.

Why should we cheer for a guy that tried to twist the rules in his favour, expected preferential treatment and when caught out or questioned could afford to hire expensive legal teams to try overturn immigration rules.

The Aussies have a term about "the fair go" which basically means we are all equal.

They stopped thousands of their own citizens from returning to the country of their birth, often for humanitarian reasons.

But nah old Novax whose contribution to society is being good at hitting a ball around a square deserves to just sail on through and fook the plebs.

He trampled all over public health guidelines in the past yet you expect the Aussies, the ones with some of the strictest public health guidelines on covid, to just forget that.

As the song goes "let it go"

I am not allowed discuss …

ABF cocked up the 1st time with the visa, by not allowing him the proper time allowed. They Government couldn't go back down that route, despite

    a) having COVID not being a valid reason,

    b) the exemption was applied for 6 days too late anyway (very conveniently)

    c) He did not disclose travel in the preceding 14 days

As there were protests outside the AO grounds bt anti-vaxxers, the minister made the decision. It's really not that difficult. The fact that he was digging himself a bigger hole every time he and his family opened their mouths finished it. If you or I stood at immigration with that litany of failures we would have been booted out 1st time. I suppose you would be applauding him if his lawyers got him in, and you on the plane home after losing thousands of dollars in travel and accommodation expenses.

The judge did not rule on the validity of his visa. the judge only ruled on the process followed by ABF.

who's pathetic... ummm... I wonder.. man.. I kinda feel sorry for him.. to be so brainwashed that he would ruin his career like that.. silly man.. big hug glasso - feel sorry for you too

Despite widespread misconceptions, vaccination is not a requirement to enter Australia. There are exemptions available which Djokovic applied for and which two separate medical boards reviewed and concluded that he was eligible for the exemption under the law despite being unvaccinated. Not only that, a judge ruled in his favour that the border patrol had been unreasonable, un-rational and unfair in the procedures they used to ban him entering the country. His visa was then reinstated and he was then allowed enter the country. Finally, late Friday afternoon the Australian immigration minister decided he was going to invoke his absolute power and nullify his visa and order his deportation. The reason the minister gave, which he was required to provide under the law, was that Djokovic's presence would excite anti-vaccine sentiment. If any of you have information that was not available to the two medical boards and one judge then please let us know. Otherwise you should be concerned with the reasons for his deportation because once a convention like this is broken, what is to stop the Australian minster from banning a singer, performer or any other persons whose opinions were considered dangerous? Once the precedent has been set (as it has with Djokovic) it is no longer valid to argue that you cannot ban someone from entering the country because they hold opinions that you don't agree with because you agreed to it when they did it to someone else.

It was in writing to Tennis Australia on 29th November and mid December that having covid was not sufficient for an exemption for international travellers. Once the judge heard that he had not been given the promised time on the 1st visa, there was no way that was being re-visited the second time. 3 judges found in the minister's favour the second time.

It came to light through social media that his immigration form contained bollox. Australia well within their rights to toss him out.

No-one is saying Djokovic cant refuse the vaccine. He can refuse whatever he likes but if a country has rules based on that decision then that's tough. He cant lie his way round the place then expect to stay when he's caught out telling porkies.

This is how it is until countries start accepting clear COVID tests and ignoring recent travel for anti-vaxxers. No amount of the gurning Olympics on here is going to change that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,507 ✭✭✭✭Larbre34

Yes, mistakes were made, communications were poor.

But in the end Djokovic entered Australia on false pretences, on false information. It matters not a shyte if that false information came from him personally, or from his people.

It would be the same outcome for you, or I, or I would hope any person of any colour or creed.

You want to rely on social media reports if you wish however, two separate medical boards reviewed his application and concluded that he was eligible for the exemption under the law despite being unvaccinated. Not only that, a judge ruled in Djokovic's favour in that the border patrol had been unreasonable, un-rational and unfair in the procedures they used to ban him entering the country.

You can invoke gurning Olympics all day but the reality is that the real reason people are cheering his deportation is because of his choice he made about his body and his health, and that decision happens to be different with the vast majority of people which they feel he should be punished for.

The three judges were at pains to state that their hands were tied and there was little they could do due to the absolute power of the minister.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,364 ✭✭✭jj880

You cant be serious here. So I shouldn't rely on the photos and videos of him in Marbella before he travelled to Australia?

Its a stitch up I tell you! They cloned Djokovic so they could fake reports of him in Spain! 😂😂

yes, that power 113(c) basically can't be challenged.

by stating something vague and subjective like they did means that's actually more so the case as

he was deported on the minister's opinion under that law, not on any point of legal reasoning.

that was the deliberate tactic as it assured that the judges couldn't rule any other way

Hawke conceded that Djokovic had a valid medical exemption on arrival and also that Djokovic was not a Covid spread risk but with that law it's all moot.

In a radical reframing of the case against the Serbian tennis star, Immigration Minister Alex Hawke concedes the unvaccinated Djokovic entered Australia with a valid medical exemption and poses a low risk of contracting the virus while in Australia and passing it on to others due to his recent infection.

    https://www.theage.com.au/sport/australia-declares-djokovic-a-risk-to-civil-order-and-public-health-20220114-p59oex.html

btw, wasting your time, like talking with this guy!

You can rely on whatever you want but the fact is that he wasnt deported because of what he did or didn't do in Marbella, he was deported for his political opinions. You want to get annoyed and have arguments about very separate things and have no arguments on the merits. You should direct your anger at the people who are imposing these rules rather than getting annoyed with Djokovic for decisions he makes about his health and his body which you don't seem to agree with. The reality is that the real reason people are cheering his deportation is because he was unvaccinated.

No, I said he lied on his visa application and as a famous anti-vaxxer this is very dangerous because if he is allowed to get away with it then the message being sent is you can lie to get your way with no consequence.

That's the wrong message to be sending out, the right one was to refuse him entry and let everyone know that if you try and cheat the system you will be punished.

But he wasn't deported for lying on visa application, he was deported because of his political opinions. Are you in favour of people being deported from countries and prevented from pursuing their livelihood because of their political opinions?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,473 ✭✭✭Tork

Personally, I don't believe that he contracted Covid again and that the paperwork for that second bout is fake. But if he and his people had been clever about this, they could've made it into Australia without any of this furore. They had to have known how strict the Australian Border Force people are, and that it isn't easy to get into that country. Djokovic conveniently having Covid just ahead of the Australian Open (i.e. acquiring the dodgy paperwork which can't be hard for somebody in his position), then self-isolating would've cleared the path for him to come in. As they say, it isn't the crime that causes you the problems, it's the attempted cover up.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39,091 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

He was deported because it was considered he would be a bad influence on others as well as it being in the interests of the Australian people.

It was absolutely critical that a person who lied on his visa application not be allowed stay.

The fact he lied on his application played a huge part in the decision to refuse him entry.

The minister at his final decision had much more background information about the individual and his behaviour than the medical board or anyone else making decisions prior to him getting on a plane to Australia. All the stuff that came to light gave a very clear picture of what they were actually dealing with and how he was likely to behave in Australia, what the Australian people thought of him coming into Australia and therefore was excellently placed to intervene and make a very good decision for Australia, it's people and for himself. It was a no brainer to kick him out.

The stuff that came to light was that he lied on his travel declaration and also was proven to behave improperly when being covid positive. That's all very much relevant and all taken into account in ministers thinking.

He was absolutely within his right to kick him out and personally I feel the minister used the correct clause so as to put an end to djkovic trying to use money to frustrate the process through the courts. This ensured he was speedily deported.

Neither the two medical boards, four judges or the minister himself stated anything you mentioned in your post as a reason for being deported. The simple reality is that the reason you are happy Djokovic was deported was purely for his political opinions and health choices which you don't agree with.

i actually heard at the weekend that he might not have even had Covid in Dec.. that he made that up and faked papers to say he had it.. just so that he could use that an an excuse to get into Oz and not need to be vaccinated..

    wouldn't surprise me..

didn't work anyway lol.. but, I just heard this.. didn't look into it any further..

kinda over the Djok story now.. a good result was had

Bingo. His acolytes on here keep banging on about it not being about his actions and more about his words/thoughts. This is BS. A quick breakdown of the whole saga:

He was granted a medical exemption from having to be vaccinated, along with a few others

He travels to Aus, then is denied entry because he doesn't meet the requirements of entry for unvaxed passengers

Visa cancelled and he is moved to immigration detention building

Story of him contracting Covid on 16th December, which is basis for exemption, is leaked

This date is weeks/months after he'd entered the Aus Open, and conveniently means he can end his isolation just in time for the tournament

He confirms he was notified on 17th December, and admits not isolating in the days/weeks afterwards

He appeals the cancellation and is successful, on procedural grounds only, because they didn't allow enough time to get his papers in order

He later claims the reason for his initial refusal is because of human error, throws his staff under the bus

Minister for immigration cancels his visa, citing "health and good order grounds, on the basis that it was in the public interest to do so".

So, he put his name down, despite not having any plausible way into the country. Then, weeks later, he 'gets' covid and has to isolate for 10 days.....but doesn't. The 10 days ends at a stage that, at the very least, makes it look like he lied in order to get an exemption. Then, he says it wasn't him that signed / filled out the forms, when it turns out that the forms were the issue.

He could have played this all a whole lot smarter, and he'd be on his way to breaking records. He didn't, he made a mockery and a circus out of the whole ordeal.....pissing all over the entire Aussie immigration staff, policies and procedures in the process. A litany of lies, coupled with a blatant disregard for the health and well-being of others, including a whole gaggle of young tennis stars, means he cannot be trusted. He literally burned whatever little goodwill he had and kept on lighting matches everywhere he went.

He wasn't refused entry for political reasons. He was refused entry for trying to deceive the people responsible for the safety, health and well being of 20+ million people. Imagine the uproar over here if you weren't allowed to do (insert whatever you want here), but rich and famous people were allowed, even after they made a dog and pony show of your whole legal system.

You can prove this, of course? It's not just something you feel is true and are stating it as fact, yeah? Because I've not seen anything of the sort.

The simple reality is that the reason you are happy Djokovic was deported was purely for his political opinions and health choices which you don't agree with.

No, the simple reality is he was kicked out, for good reason, and you and the rest of the anti-vax brigade here are foaming at the mouth because your hero faced the consequences of his own actions. Imagine that? It is interesting to note that you've changed your tune from "purely political reasons" to "political reasons and health choices", like that's not a valid reason. His health choices impact negatively upon the citizens of Australia, so he's not allowed in. Simple as, end of story.

The Australian government, in deporting Djokovic, did not contend that he posed a threat to the public health due to a risk of transmitting COVID. The opposite is true: the government acknowledged that he qualified for a legal exemption from the vaccine requirement to enter the country given that he just contracted COVID as reflected by a December 16 positive test, followed by a negative test on December 22, and therefore has high levels of natural immunity. That is why he received a legal visa to enter Australia despite being unvaccinated. The proffered justification from Immigration Minister Alex Hawke, who cancelled his visa and ordered him deported, was that Djokovic’s statements in April, 2020 implied that he was sceptical of vaccines, and the presence of someone in Australia who is viewed as an “icon” of personal choice would foster social disruption and “excite” anti-vaccine sentiments.

In other words, the principle just embraced by the Australian government and upheld by its judicial system (whose hands were largely tied due to the virtually absolute power vested in the government) is that anyone who has ever expressed any scepticism over vaccines in general, or the COVID vaccine in particular, can and should be denied entrance to the country and be prevented from pursuing their livelihood — even though the government admits they pose no threat to the public health by transmitting the virus to others. Immigration lawyers and civil liberties activists in the country are warning of the grave dangers posed to everyone from this precedent.

Keep c&p ing that from whatever anti-vax grifter has your ear. It really makes you look reasonable and knowledgeable.

You always know when you're winning the argument when they eventually give up and call you anti-vax. At this point, the functional definition of "anti-vax" is the same as "grifter," "white supremacist," "contrarian," "misogynist," etc.: i.e. anyone who questions or defies accepted orthodoxy. These are not so much words as weapons. It's such a well know script that it is indeed deserving of the name cliché and I pin that accusation on my accusers, because that's what they're resorting to. That's how it can apply to covid maximalists and vaccine absolutists.

Lookit, the lad Djokavic can hold whatever opinions he likes.

I believe there is a new ‘circuit’ for unvaccinated players, he can play in that surely.

It if he wants to play in other peoples countries he better shut his gob or play for a couple of hundred bucks.

These kind of people want it every way, shoot their mouths off and expect there would be no consequence.

Well done Australia, for kicking these arrogant stones out of the country.

You stood up for your people.

100% agree. His behaviour over the whole affair has been appalling, and the only people defending him have fallen for some anti-vax nonsense, ie "he was deported because of his political beliefs".

His political beliefs are: "the rues don't apply to me".

He has claimed that he was exempt due to having previously contracted Covid. Victoria state apparently accepted this. But the Aussie federal doesn’t. Prior infection was not a federal exemption. Consequently the federal denied entry, being strong on vaccinations for entry, no matter if you have celebrity status. He went to court. Eventually lost. Deported.

If he wanted to defend his titles, why not get vaccinated? Historically the Aussie’s have always been tuff on entry health status. Before Covid. To plead ignorance after having competed there several times before was a lame excuse.

He didn't lose in court, a judge ruled in his favour in that the immigration was unfair in their procedures when cancelling his visa. The Australian government even acknowledged that he wasn't a threat to public health. The reason his visa was cancelled was because of comments he made about vaccines in April 2020 which the Australian immigration minister deemed to be dangerous and may excite anti-vaccine sentiment. Nothing to do with public health or The Science TM.
