Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    This just announced this morning.

    Lottery Places Available

    20.12.2021

We are delighted to announce that a limited number of places will be made available for the 2022 Dublin Marathon via a lottery system. An application can be made for these places on the Dublin Marathon website from Thursday 6th January until midnight on Thursday 13th January. Please note that only one entry per person will be accepted.

A fee of €15 per lottery entry will apply; € 12 will be refunded if not successful with a €3 administration charge. If successful, the lottery entry fee will be redeemable against the entry fee of €110*.

Registrants will learn their entry status by email / SMS on Friday, 17th January. They will have until midnight on Friday 21st January to redeem the offer.

Any places not redeemed will be offered in round two of the lottery from Tuesday 1st February, with offers needing to be redeemed by midnight Monday 7th February 2022.

*The Dublin Marathon is a not-for-profit organisation with entry fees, funding the management, development and promotion of the Dublin Marathon. The entry fee covers the escalating costs of event management from insurance, soaring prices of products and materials, and anticipated additional safety measures needed due to Covid-19

For Good for age entries i see on eventmaster "Online ticket sales available between November 08, 2021 at 12:00 and December 15, 2021 at 00:15". Anyone know if this will be reopened? I hadn't seen any notification that this window had already opened so only checked it this morning after the lottery announcement

Those GFA entries were originally made in 2020 - it was just that the race was cancelled that year before they were processed, so they rolled them over to 2021, and emailed people people with the GFA with a chance to register (for 2022) during those dates. It's possible they might have another GFA application period, but I suppose it depends on how many people are already registered. I'd email the DCM office and ask.

New sponsor incoming, reckon it's An Post. Not many other possible options beside financial institutions.

    "A limited number of services"

There are around 22,500 race spots, how many of these places are in the lottery draw?

And what are the chances of actually getting one of these lottery spots?

Chances are about as high as they are of getting a GP appointment.

Do you think it will be an actual lottery ?the application did ask how many times you have ran DCM and for your AI number . Neither of which is relevant for a lottery place ! Conspiracy theory anyone ?

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,314 ✭✭✭Bluesquare

Odds are better for sure - you don’t need to pass a Covid test before you apply !

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,698 ✭✭✭rovers_runner

I suppose they will try to have a balance of all, club/past participants/novices.

I read somewhere already that AI and clubs felt they didn't have enough places to meet anywhere near their demand.

They should really consider going for 35 or 40 thousand as a cap of entrants for 2023. The demand will be there and it allows them scope for additional costs in planning.

Their website is a total mess: can't actually find the race date for 2022, GFA unclear, still mentions 2020 and 2021 races

Was trying to find this myself yesterday so I could make sure the family doesn't plan anything else for that weekend, gave up trying to find it on the website.

Well, Sports Travel International is selling packages assuming the usual bank holiday weekend date i.e. 30 October.

  • Registered Users Posts: 257 ✭✭colin32

I couldn't find anything on the website either for a date, but it's usually bank holiday weekend in October

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 310 ✭✭MrSkinny

30 October if you trust the countdown clock on the website. It's certainly poor that such basic information is not clear.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 494 ✭✭ClashCityRocker

I tweeted them the other day about GFA; it's closed for 2022

30 October mentioned by Dublin Mararthon on various social media feeds recently also.

Got a place also. Not sure how I feel as I said after my one and only marathon in 2008 that I wouldn't do another. Have to go for it I guess.

Good to hear so much positive news about the race and series.

They should be announcing the race series shortly with new sponsor, would expect a massive number of runners on the day in October this year given the long wait of 2020 entrants along with people who have just taken to running in that period and are mad for road.

17732 finishers in 2019, would expect upwards of 22000 this time.

Just got a mail telling me I'm in! Seems only yesterday that I was pissed about losing the lottery for the 2020 one (and we all know how it went anyway).

Now I just need to get back in the shape I was a couple years ago :p

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,698 ✭✭✭rovers_runner

I would say the vast majority of overseas entrants eventually cancelled their place.

  • Registered Users Posts: 257 ✭✭colin32

I've just had a 2nd email saying the same thing, so does that mean I've 2 places 🤔

Me too, but the link/code is the same. When I try to use it again I get back a generic error from eventmaster

    Organised for 30th October?

Hold it in mid-summer if you want it to be allowed to go ahead.

Looks like everyone in the lottery got a place.

lack of interest, high cancellations, or increasing the entrant numbers?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,941 ✭✭✭growleaves

I was told the same thing last year in the lead-up to last October.

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 24,118 Mod ✭✭✭✭robinph

Potentially a lot won't turn up on the day, but I've just sat on my entry and not cancelled. Money was written off anyway, if not for being on here I'd probably have forgotten that I'd even entered.

Not sure how many people actually cancel entries normally. Very vocal few on social media who scream about not getting refunds or deferral, but how many actually bother to cancel when they can?

Would many tour companies or running clubs in the UK book these events in bulk?

I'd say a few could have cancelled large orders together as a collective and either did something else in 2021 or just held out altogether due to uncertainty.

From what I've seen almost all Irish entrants have held onto their entries, is the central Europe or US market that big?

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 24,118 Mod ✭✭✭✭robinph

Running clubs may have groups heading over together, but unlikely to be a block booking and not aware of such a system by DCM for doing so. Tour operators might cancel a block, but I never got the impression that it was a significant thing for Dublin compared to London. Was always possible to booked direct for your entry until 2019 and get a place at the last minute with a cheap Ryanair flight, so why bother paying anyone else to do it for you.

I think that numbers from the UK jumped quite a bit with the change to Sunday running, and there was more than a handful easily identifiable as marathon runners on the flights I'd take at the last moment each time from my local airport. With many other ways of getting to Dublin from the UK the numbers could be quite significant.

Absolute numbers of UK runners doing Dublin are probably less than Irish running London, but proportionally I'd expect it to be higher in the UK-Dublin direction.

Thought I saw somewhere during Covid that DCM was about 20% overseas entrants - it’s a v popular one anyway

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,298 ✭✭✭dave_o_brien

Myself, my brother and brother-in-law all got a place, so it does seem like a lot of places were available.

God, you'd miss the vaccine discussion in the DCM thread all the same.

Good stuff to hear people getting in, as it was looking like a closed shop. The two I knew who were applying also got in. We might even have a novice thread around these parts at this rate.

So last week I thought I had no entry for Dublin and a confirmed entry for Berlin.

Fast fwd 1 week and I have a confirmed entry for Dublin and NO entry for Berlin!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 162 ✭✭custom_build

What happened with your Berlin entry? Ive been drawn in the lottery but they have yet to take any money from my account.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,236 ✭✭✭AuldManKing

Got an email to say 'Place is available due to deferral - further details in Feb with access code' - but then missed emails that came in December with a code!

So I guess I missed it.
