You forgot to mention vaccines in your post. Do you think they have or haven't played a huge role in how we can move on with very limited restrictions?

The only way out of this is mass non-compliance/civil disobedience.

But it doesn't seem that the Irish are remotely capable of it. Just look at one of the easier rules to not follow: mask wearing—there's nearly 100% compliance. It's quite pathetic really.

No, I wanted *any* answer. Not inane bullshíte. That ^^^ was a decent response...but every time you decry everyone for doing nothing, you admitted you are part of the same problem, even though, in your head, you are the righteous one.

It's also one of the easier rules to follow. It's not just the Irish either. There are mask mandates in lots of countries and there's compliance. Are they pathetic as well?

I don’t see this at all.

compliance seems to encourage prolonged restrictions.

on the main covid thread there are plenty of posters who think it would be prudent to continue this or that…

I say fair play to the protesters. Govn needs to know not everyone thinks they, the Govn are saving them etc.

A lot of folk have simply been scared witless by the media/Govn onslaught of fear mongering. Regrettably.

Yep like I said yesterday there’s very few countries obsessed with covid like we are, it’s depressing really.

Since Christmas Day they have varied between a low of 82 and a high of 94, that's stable. Picking single random data points 2 months apart, especially with different variants prevalent, does not prove he is wrong in that statement. In the context of the last 2-3 weeks he is not.

Not sure if it's been mentioned but I caught a bit of the utterly dreadful Claire Byrne live show last night. Fionnán Sheahan of the equally dreadful Indo, breezed into the studio and tried (Badly) to share what he was hearing from sources (Leaks) re possible new close contact rules being relaxed. If he's correct, they seem bizzare.

In essence if rules relaxed, 2, possibly 3 official Antigen tests (Pharmacy I presume) will be required and face masks required. Its also seems specific sectors will only be considered 😳

I'd imagine it's more to do with the threat of a fine for not wearing one.

yes that was the case in November anyway, there was a suggestion that recovery certs worked instead though That doesn’t seem to be the case. Hopefully it’s all dropped soon.

Because commentary from malcontents on here is entirely reflective of how the population are living their lives

That's coming from the ECDC, who NPHET take their guidelines from. It is a recognition that Omicron can cause widespread non-medical problems and however daft it may look it's an effort to give governments a way to partially address mass staffing problems that may result from it. It should all be short-term.

But I mean once in the US, did you test when flying between the 4 states you mentioned.

    As an example, take cinemas.

Nobody called for them to be closed or restricted. No science saying they need to be closed or restricted. Nobody would criticise if they were reopened immediately.

    Yet they remain restricted.

If nobody actually wants restrictions, then why do cinemas remain restricted? Why doesn't Michael Martin march to a podium this evening and say that cinemas can reopen fully?

You say nobody wants restrictions but I'm reminded of that old saying "Judge them by their actions".

    Really?

The constant coverage every hour on the radio talk shows, the ads in every break, the multiple news headlines and push notifications every day, the signage everywhere, the impact on workplaces - similar warnings everywhere, mails from HR about it...

    Need I go on?

I largely agree with this. If the fines and mandatory nature of them were removed in the morning (and the restrictions won't be over until they are), the masks would likewise disappear from the majority of faces overnight.

But there are those who are still very afraid of giving up their masks and can't accept that even in the above scenario, no one would be stopping them from continuing to wear them but that they can't force others to feel the same level of risk or fear they do. You only need to look at the masks thread to see that.

Micheal is weak and compromised by not only his inability to make a decision without a mountain of reports, but also the impact tragic personal loss is having on his approach to this.

He's also close to retirement and the payout that awaits him.

All he needs to do is wait it out till the end of the year and kick the can down the road/"follow the science". It'll be Leo's problem again then, and he'll have completed his only goal - to be Taoiseach.

    https://coronavirus.data.gov.uk/details/healthcare?areaType=nhsRegion&areaName=London#card-reproduction_number_r_and_growth_rate

Both cases and hospitalisations peaked on january 4 in the UK including Northern Ireland! If we are 10-14 days behind we should see Ireland follow this weekend or early next week.

If it follows the same trajectory as the UK it will be very interesting to see to which degree the government will lift restrictions on january 30 given the two weeks of dropping figures between 14-30 january. It seems to me they might not be able to push the 'another 2 weeks' line so convincingly this time with only staff shortages as a motive and HSE Paul Reid saying they are (somewhat) coping with it currently. I am therefore optimistic.

Again worth noting that if the trend continues, by the latter half of January it won't be 2 weeks of dropping figures, it will be 2 months of dropping ICU numbers.

There is resistance of allowing recovery as a way of getting a QR code and certs as they push vaccinations and boosters and wouldnt want unvaccinated people who have recovered from Covid get on board (see Djocovic). It is pretty mean and also leaves unboostered Omicron infected people out even though they have really good immunity.

Have you left Ireland during the pandemic? England is like living on a different planet, when I say this to friends and family they think I’m exaggerating but it’s the truth. The difference is striking, like the feeling you get when you first visit a foreign country and you get a massive culture shock. It was honestly insane seeing it.

I agree. I really noticed it when i spend some time in Holland in the summer but they have completely reversed it w the 5pm closing time. The difference in feel is striking!

No testing required for internal flights although I traveled by road between 2 of them.

Theoretically when is the domestic covid pass supposed to expire? I have February in my head for some reason but can't find any info online.

More likely summer 2022 or never!
