All games have an element of repetition. Spiderman and Miles Morales are some of the most fun games I've played in recent years. And that's what it's about for me - fun

    Soulsborne games are great.

    The Spider-Man games are great.

    Games are great.

Didn't mean to get people riled up, the game is fine anyway off to find another cat

    👀🤣

Which reminds me I still have Bloodborne in the backlog. Will tackle that next year as I've only heard great things. I hope it's not too scary as I've heard it has a horror elements and I hate horror games.

Just finished Observer System Redux today, man, i need a serious cheery game after that. It's a great game but was so immersive and unnerving, brilliant work by the devs.

Have Final Fantasy 7 Remake on PS5 to start tonight and finally decided on the Assassin's Creed game I'm gonna play next. Was between Ezio trilogy, Odyssey and Valhalla, gonna pick up Odyssey tomorrow and give it another blast. I had only finished 2 chapters according to my trophies when i first got it so sounds like still plenty for me to do.

Completely finished Assassins Creed Odyssey, including all the DLC. Really enjoyed it overall and the graphics were brilliant. The new free DLC was a nice little treat. Very tempted to go straight into Valhalla now but I might take a break and start something else.

What's this, Greenie? Assassin Christmas. 😉 I too have also completed the Assassin’s Creed Odyssey - Crossover Stories DLC, bringing my tally to 77.

In fact, I reinstalled Odyssey solely for the two-part crossover but I’m probably gonna reinstall it again at some point because this game is badass, oh my god. Ubisoft made me nostalgic for a title released merely three years ago!  Especially because, despite this new story taking place six months after the events in the Atlantis DLC, there's constant cheeky references to the main events in the base game, such as these little riddle side missions that lead you on treasure hunts.

I won’t spoil the premise but let’s just say it does an excellent job of setting Kassandra on her new path while making me excited for any future crossovers.  It was lovely catching up with Kass; she’s the best main character since Ezio (thoughts and prayers to those who played as  Alexios 😆) I do wish your choices at the end of the main game factored into this DLC à la Blood and Wine for the Witcher 3 where either Yen, Ciri etc pay Geralt a visit, but that would require Ubisoft actually making, you know, an effort.

Anyway, Greece is still pretty to move around in and those playing on PS5 (and Series X) will receive a nice 60 fps boost which nearly always improves how games look IMO. I was glad to see the map is still respectful of your time when it comes to exploring it in that you can still find a quest item before you’ve even met the quest giver. Similarly,  if you’re on a quest and accidentally stumble upon a later step it will instantly update, much like a Bethesda game. This seems like a given seeing as this is an RPG but the reason I highlight this will become clear in a later post…

I thought re-learning the controls would take some rewiring but it was like riding a bike. Kassandra is just so fluid and responsive; it was like a breath of fresh air again after the sluggishness of Eivor. Also, despite my reservations about the spear abilities acting as a substitute for, well, skill it was such a relief to have a functional stealth system again. In fact, no spoilers, but those who are spear dependent are going to really struggle in the third act of this…Thankfully, my build is not reliant on spear abilities and I can one-shot enemies whether in stealth or open combat.  If anything, this late game development put to bed complaints that it’s not possible to assassinate every NPC in this game because I was able to do it with my assassination damage nerfed. However, for those who still insist it isn’t possible, this DLC introduces a weapon where assassinations are always guaranteed but at the cost of 75% of your health, essentially punishing players who refuse to make a good build by capping health at 25%.   A true Assassin doesn’t need health, after all…

And on that note, no, Odyssey is not an Assassin’s Creed game but it's a damn good one, and as "gameplay first" person that's the most important thing to me. I’ve gushed about it multiple times on these forums so this is a no-brainer: if you liked the base game (why wouldn’t you?) reinstall it and play this DLC today. It brings great closure to one of the best characters in the AC universe while serving as a reminder of just how fun the combat and progression systems are. I even made it as far as Megaris on new game plus before I had to force myself to uninstall it to finish off the backlog lol. Oh, and no new trophies for this DLC, thank goodness, as I got 100% ages ago.

Yea you do not want to go straight into Valhalla after finishing everything in Odyssey. I would wait for at least 6 months, that way you should be able to pick up a complete edition of Valhalla containing the two already released expansions and possibly the third one one too.

Thronebreaker, the extended Gwent game from The Witcher 3. Enjoying it a lot, very addictive. Can be frustrating at times when it comes to certain puzzles because it just throws new made-up cards at you with new conditional rules and you've to work out the puzzle.

But when proper matches happen, it's a lot of fun. Can be the luck of the draw sometimes but there are some decent cards you pick up that can nearly always allow you to implement a strategy, picking whatever cards you want from your deck etc. Though I'm getting to the stage where either my strategy doesn't work and I'm trounced (usually due to them pulling weird tricky cards that ive never seen before), or it becomes far too easy to win by 150+ points.

Only real issue with the game though is it crashes a lot. Sometimes even when loading the game and it gets to the "This game has an Autosave feature" screen, it crashes there for me at least 25% of the time. Worst is if it crashes after a match and you end up having to replay it.

But it's not enough to put me off because for the most part it's a great game. Easy to quickly pick up and play a match or two, or sink a few hours into at a time in front of the fire with a beer.

Shady Part Of Me. Only a fiver in current sale and highly recommend. You play two personalities of one person working together in a wonderful platform/puzzler, none of the puzzles are too taxing but they are hugely satisfying

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,181 ✭✭✭KH25

Gave Ghost of a Tale a try on PSNow and finished it before Christmas. It’s a slow burner, but not a bad little game at all. I picked up Jedi Fallen Order in the new PlayStation sale and platinumed it today. Overall it was a fun game but it could have been a little bit longer.

Got bored over Christmas and made a little tier list of all the games I completed/played significantly last year.

    2021games.png

Now that the recency bias has settled I feel confident in recapping my personal gaming experience in 2021. This list doesn't include replays/games played in previous years; only new ones.

    Pleasant surprise:

Astro's Playroom was an absolutely delight from start to finish. At one point it was my GOTY but was somehow surpassed by an even more fantastic game. As well as being nostalgic it was so well made for a mere tech demo. It could have easily just been a bunch of cringe references telling us how great Playstation is but somehow the devs found a way to make those references work within the context of a genuinely lovely platformer that also showcased the best of the new controller. The music was great too - if you know you know lol. Such a wonderful welcome to the PS5.

    Honourable mention:

Life is Strange: True Colours. The first one is in my top 3 games of all time and this one is definitely the most polished and well directed in the series. I could tell it was going to be great from the opening title music - instantly felt like I was back in the world of Life is Strange. Episode 3 had me smiling from ear to ear. Square Enix has taken a lot of Ls lately but every now and then they score some Ws when they let their developers, in this case Deck Nine, do what they want . Credit where credit is due.

    Best game RELEASED this year:

I battled back and forth between this game and True Colours but ultimately went with Deathloop. Just an absolute joy. Everything I love about Arkane in one game. A very vocal but loud minority were predictably down on it before it was even released and it's obvious why but, hey, haters gonna hate. Arkane is the one to watch. They're so passionate about their craft and they seem incapable of making a bad game. Can't wait for Redfall.

But my Game of the Year is...

Subnautica/Subnautica Below Zero. I knew I would like Subnautica because a friend of mine was telling me how he was enjoying it on his X Box but I was not prepared for this to become one of my favourite games of all time. It's everything that's great about video games. I can't wait to see what this developer does going forward.

And now for my sh*t list:

    Most disappointing game:

Late Shift. I was really rooting for Late Shift as I enjoyed Erica, and FMVG is a genre I'm quickly becoming fond of but this was just...OK I guess. The premise is inherently problematic with a major flaw that once you realise as early as I did completely lessens the impact of the rest of the story, resulting in me just not caring. Without spoilers, sometimes the best choice... is not giving the player a choice.

    So bad it's good:

Grand Theft Auto: Vice City. I've never liked GTA (well apart from 4 and 5) and for years I took a beating for it because I was obviously in the minority. I decided to dig out the PS4 re-release after hearing people's thoughts on the definitive edition. It's so hilariously bad that at times, when I think no one is looking, I kind of it enjoy it. Every mission has me grinning at how R* mess them up with the terrible shooting, driving and camera. It's exactly how I remember except now, with the definitive edition release, more people are seeing it for what it is and I love it. And there are so many design oversights that you can actually cheese many of the missions by using its own stupidity against it. 🤣

    The absolute worst:

Only one could have won this. Only one I completed this year that leaves me seething with rage even just thinking about it. Days f*cking Gone, except not enough days have gone since uninstalling this monstrosity from my console. Horrible, horrible, horrible, wretched, nasty little game with a blatant resentment towards its audience and I hate it right back. Unrewarding, poorly paced, too long, asinine, ridiculous, shallow, forced, generic, trying-too-hard, incompetent, Last of Us wannabe, Ubisoft wannabe, Red Dead wannabe etc, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc. A bad AAA (heh) action adventure open world game, a bad survival game, a bad story driven game somehow all at the same time, the game's one good feature comes too late and if you try to engage with that feature before you're supposed to the map won't count it which is an absolute disrespect of the player's time. The story is meh, the acting is meh, the characters are bad, the enemies are worse, the open world is bland, the missions are boring, the mechanics are janky and how dare you, Sony Bend, make me fast travel TWICE with a ridiculous fuel meter that constantly needs babysitting, the lore is under-baked, the dialogue is overcooked AND funny enough, it was Anthem that kind of ruined Days Gone for me because I made the mistake of playing it at the same time and thus being reminded of what fun actually felt like. Anyway, breathing now so I'll end it with this - there's a video from a hilarious Youtuber that beautifully summed up the stupidity of Days Gone when he noted that you can't fast travel with your bike until you've cleared a nest but when you reach the nest you can ride your bike through it proving that you can, in fact, fast travel. Unforgivable. I wish I could go back in time and not play Days Gone but the trauma is a part of me now. Sony Bend is the worst developer in the world. That's all.

    To an amazing 2022! 👀

The Astro games are superb... easily up there with Mario imho. Astrobot on PSVR is probably the killer app for the PSVR.

Glad your enjoying it. It gets a bit of a marmite reaction but it's my number 1 PS4 game by some distance. Will likely give it another playthrough soon

Not sure how up to date this is, but if it's recent, there were about 8000 people on PSN playing it in October. https://battlefieldtracker.com/bf1/insights/population?days=-1

And I'd also like to echo TPP's on the fence review of Days Gone. Except I didn't get far enough to get whatever it is that apparantly makes the game better.

Currently playing Kingdoms of Amalur: Re-Reckoning which was one of the November PS+ games. Thoroughly enjoying it and finding it very comforting. It does nothing new but merely wraps its arms around me and harks back to when Fable and Fable 2 came out, I played them to death. The combat feels nice and meaty, there are oodles of different weapons to try out and a nice little stealth option. The only thing I'll say is that it is very easy, I've bumped the difficulty to hard which I never do and Im finding it manageable and may bump it again as I continue levelling up. Anyway, its a fun little hack and slash romp with loads of random encounters and missions. Worth a play for fans of the likes of Fable or Diablo although its nowhere near as frenetic as Diablo.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,760 ✭✭✭✭Potential-Monke

Loved that game when I played it on the 360. Started a playthrough when it came to Plus but got distracted. Great little game, as you said it didn't do anything new at the time, but it did what it did well.

A few more I completed last year (think Marvel’s Avengers was my last game of 2021):

    78. Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla - Crossover Stories DLC

    79. Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla - Mastery Challenges DLC

    80. Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla - Siege of Paris DLC

For everything good I can say about Valhalla there’s always something bad around the corner that ruins it. For instance, the game is stunning in 60 fps but then the immersion breaking jank engulfs it. I love the cairn challenges because they actually make you think but then I hate the flying paper activities because they force the player to engage with the sluggish climbing mechanics. Replaying Odyssey’s part of the crossover only reaffirmed how much of a step down Valhalla is in every way. As this event is canonical I switched to female Eivor after having dropped her during the first 30 hours of my original playthrough… and was promptly reminded of why. I’m sure the voice actress is talented but the way she has been directed is not good. Secondly, Eivor is a rubbish character. So bland. So serious. So one-note. And when you put her against the charismatic, charming, attractive Kassandra the former is woefully exposed. Any time Kassandra was not on screen I was rushing just to get to her segments.   Also, there is no way that their introductory cutscene fight doesn’t end with Eivor getting her arse handed to her. The fact that it ended in a draw is laughable. As for their relationship, I found it really forced. I think their squabbling is supposed to come across as charming but their whole frenemies arc is rushed and corny, going from butting heads to best of friends far too quickly.

The core game is still a bug ridden mess on a struggling, outdated engine where you have to micromanage it with multiple manual saves to avoid quest breakages. Eivor still feels horrible to control and why there isn’t a ‘hold to sprint’ option is beyond me. The stealth is still busted with inconsistent vision cones on the enemy A.I. - sometimes they will spot you behind walls and then sometimes you’ll be standing right in front of them and they have no clue. The guard placements are not suited to stealth level design because they’re too bunched up together and when they’re not they’re always watching each other’s sixes. That means if you do manage to entirely stealth a fort you won’t do so without at least agitating a guard or two who will go sniffing around for you; you can never truly “ghost” it.

The weaknesses of the core mechanics are laid bare in the Mastery Challenges DLC, a quest line where you meet some old woman who wants you to participate in a series of tests to serve the gods or something (the story line is nonsense). The sad part about the mastery challenges is that as a concept and from a pure design perspective it’s actually really good. It’s some of the most challenging content the series has produced since, perhaps, Revelations or Brotherhood. But it’s ruined by the aforementioned busted core mechanics and terrible A.I. behaviour. Essentially, you have three challenge types: bear, wolf, raven. They represent melee combat, archery and stealth respectively and each of these challenges will require you to complete certain tasks for points. So for instance, the wolf challenge would be something like, ‘get headshots for 500 points’ or ‘hit weak points for 500 points’. Each task combined always tallies to 1000 points and if you want a gold medal you need to hit that max score.

The bear challenges are very generous in this regard seeing as there are always a few more enemies than is needed to complete the task. It’s the wolf and raven challenges that have no room for error because, unlike the bear challenges, the amount of enemies are equal to the amount needed to reach the top score which means if you need to get headshots and weak point hits, for instance, that means every single enemy needs to be a headshot and weak point hit. Just one miss and you’re looking at silver at best. Again, it’s uncharacteristically challenging for the series at this point but really fun, being reminiscent of the optional challenges in the OG games. Unfortunately, the perfection demanded from the player is not returned by the devs here because all it takes is an NPC killing himself by jumping off a cliff, or getting stuck behind inaccessible areas, or even accidentally killing his own teammate to end a perfect run prematurely. Ubisoft claims to have fixed this but these issues still persist so be warned. Also, the hit boxes are completely off so I often had to estimate what the game considered a weak point hit, as opposed to simply relying on the pointer and the eagle vision highlighter which is not good.  The raven challenges carry over all the problems about stealth from the main game but, whereas it’s tolerable there, being spotted in the mastery challenges even once locks you out of the gold medal. The Odin Mine Hideout, in particular, had me yelling at the telly for 30 minutes.

I also completed the Siege of Paris DLC which, again, has absolutely nothing to do with the Assassin’s Creed but, admittedly, it was quite enjoyable. The build up to the siege was full of tension, and how your choices impact relationships actually mattered.  The final boss battle - should you go down that route - was very well designed. The world content was also slightly better than in Wrath of the Druids DLC seeing as there were actual handcrafted side missions in this one... I like how a lot of these side missions have really simple, “why did the chicken cross the road?” logic solutions and aren’t these epic, long quests. Don’t get me wrong - the sprawling quest chains in Odyssey were awesome but this approach is fun as well.

Unfortunately, there are still too many boring barred-from-the-other-side environmental puzzles which, if you’ve played Valhalla, you will know exactly what I mean as it’s the most common phrase you’ll hear Eivor say. Additionally, exploring the map prior to completing quest lines is still gambling with your time since Valhalla refuses to tell you when a collectible is locked behind story progress meaning you could spend several minutes trying to enter an underground facility to collect something only to discover it’s completely inaccessible. Speaking of puzzles, I completed the 3 out of the 4 tomb challenges that were required for trophies.  They were fairly fun but really, really weak in comparison to, say, the Romulus Lairs in Brotherhood. The tombs from the old games tested your skills under pressure whereas these new ones just test your eyesight (most of it just involves avoiding really obvious traps).

Look, Valhalla is not a bad game but I can’t really bring myself to say it’s a good one either, or to recommend it to anyone but the die hardest of fans. It’s not an Assassin’s Creed game and it’s not a particularly immersive viking sim either because in trying to serve those two completely contradictory fantasies it ends up serving neither.   I can’t lie - if it wasn’t for the Kassandra crossover I wouldn’t have bothered reinstalling. It takes up far too much space on the PS5 to the point where I have to uninstall other games just to run it, and playing the Odyssey side of it really highlighted its weaknesses. A common question around here is whether to play Odyssey OR Valhalla as, being Ubisoft games, everyone knows it’s not really advisable to play them back-to-back due to burnout. To me, it’s become more clear than ever with this crossover DLC that the answer should always be Odyssey IMO. There’s a really great video on why Valhalla fails where Odyssey succeeds that I’d recommend to those who are on the fence. Suffice it to say if you like the base game of Valhalla you‘ll enjoy these DLCs but if you haven’t bought Valhalla as of yet just play Odyssey instead or literally any of the OG AC games. They’re far better.

I got such Super Mario 64 vibes off Astros Playroom. A really fun game and gets the juices flowing as to the potential of the PS5 Controller.

A full blown game will be very well received.
