What a brilliant season. It really makes such a difference having some competitive teams and it was fascinating to watch all the events/controversies between Merc & RB - but that's F1 and it's always been like that. I really hope 2022 is equally as exciting and has a few other teams in the mix.

Delighted Max won the championship - he deserved a bit of luck going his way and I do feel he was the more deserving driver over the course of the season. Merc understandably won the Constructors as their car is clearly superior and should have been happy with that.

Also absolutely delighted for Checo who had a great season and win, Ocon and Danny Ric for their wins. Gutted for Lando being so close to his first win in Russia but he will be one to watch.

The finale has been debriefed and argued to death but all I can say is I've never been standing up shouting and cheering at the TV during a race than I was on that final lap, watching the two best drivers in the sport fight it out in a one-lap shootout for the championship.

Absolutely hilarious reading all those football and other sporting analogies from people who clearly only tuned into the last race trying to explain how Lewis was “robbed” of the championship. 🙈

Going to be a long few weeks waiting for the next season…!

Interestingly its entirely controller by Pirelli, the manufacturers have little say in the schedule.

Seen next years front wing on the mule Alpine, looks nuts

That's not next year's wing. It's the wing from the Renault 2018 car.

Indeed it is not. Sport isn't real life. People watch sport because it's separated from real life. I chat to friends who dislike technology and VAR in football because it removes the mystery and the difference of opinion. It solves the problems of whether the ball was over the line or whether it was a hand ball or not. They prefer the debate to knowing the answer.

Sport without controversy would be in trouble. More people are interested in this season and this finale then ever before. I think the real fans overstate the problems caused by a new viewer or casual fan watching something like this. Even seasoned fans didn't know what was happening at the time but it was still brilliant to watch.

Casual fans get swept along on the wave of emotion created by the real fans. As long as people are interested then it's hunky dory.

Yeah next years cars are 100% different from front to back in terms of bodywork and aero, they can’t just slap a new front wing on a current car and get any kind of useful data.

Everyone is assuming that it’s just going to be Mercedes vs Red Bull again but it would be very surprising to me if there isn’t a shake up with the new rules. Personally I expect Mercedes to still be strong with that dominant engine, but my money would be on Ferrari to produce the best chassis based on nothing other than the fact that they’ve had the freedom to put all their focus on next year while the others battled for the championship. Testing next year should be very interesting.

So now we can have all this F1 bullshit in the next Americas cup now too. Red Bull are partnering with Alingi, Mer have partnered with Ineos UK and rumours are Ferrari will partner withLuna Rossa

    What F1 bullshit?

    In a boat race?

    Because of partners?

I can see Hamilton and Russel doing a Jack and Rose at the bow

Ferrari has demonstrated a total.inability to build a good chassis for years now. Even when they were good in 2018, it was attributed to the dodgy engine. We saw that when they lost the dodgy engine and found the chassis was heavy and draggy in 2019. The 2018 car was fast in spite of the crappie chassis.

Ferrari is without doubt the worst value for money team on the grid.

I fully expect Mercedes to be the best next year, based on track record. I just hope red bull can keep it competitive. If I was looking for an outsider id say mclaren is the best bet. They had an excellent start to the season. I hope they switched focus to next year once they knew they could build a good car. But that's just a hope.

I imagine it's a way for them to continue to invest in aero etc without it being considered part of their F1 budget.

In addition to the post above about all the great things that happened this year (e.g. Ocon's win etc), it was GREAT to see Alonso on the podium. That felt like a race win for him I'm sure, after all these years.

And also proof that age doesn't hinder ability. I wonder how many ex-F1 drivers who retired in their 30s could have continued in the new era.

Roll on 2022. Be great to see what happens with the new cars. Ferrari, McLaren, and Alpine all biding their time this year. That first test is going to be a must-watch!

That last line sums it up perfectly. Agree with the rest of your post too by the way but that last line really captured the season. 2021 in a nutshell.

Lewis Hamilton getting his Knighthood today. Can't wait to see the vomit on this thread if Sky start calling him Sir Lewis.

Do the driver contracts for 2021 end at the end of the last race? Are Kimi & Gio now officially not in F1, and is Bottas officially an Alfa driver?

I think in soccer (basing this on Football manager only) the usual date to switch contract is July 1st, not the last day of season. What's the usual here?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,686 ✭✭✭✭namloc1980

Bottas is still contractually a Mercedes driver but he was allowed to drive for Alfa yesterday by Merc.

The piece in the Indo was reprinted from The Telegraph from someone I've never heard of. So the quality is about what you can expect.

Don't know why the Indo couldn't get David Kennedy to do a bit for them instead of reprinting rubbish from the Torygraph.

Do you mean Declan Quigley? He was the Irish Indos F1 correspondent while he was pitlane reporter for RTE. He writes opinion pieces for Straight to the grid.com if you want to take a look.

    This too shall pass.

I'd forgotten about Declan. He's a good writer. Anyway, either would have done a better job than what was printed.

But sure it's been anti max conspiracies from a lot on here. Least we will never have to wade through them again

LED lights might look cool, but are they allowed under regs? Just another thing to fly off the car if there's a crash.

If this is accurate then if I had any say in Niki Lauda's estate I'd be telling Mercedes-Benz to take the Red Star off the car next year. I think Niki would be appalled by this behaviour. After all the hard work the men and women put in to overturn the advantage Red Bull had by mid season to give Lewis a car capable of carving through 24 competitors to win a Grand Prix and a third and deliver their record breaking 8th Constructors championship. And they get stroppy about something outside of every competitors control. I don't agree with what happened, race control shouldn't be as unpredictable as a scattered shower forecast on a Grand Prix Sunday but there we go, it happened, hopefully the FIA learn from it and move on.

Imagine if he had just as big a strop about Hunt winning 76 because he thought the results of Fuji should be struck out? Mercedes-Benz would have moved on by now if Niki was still around.

    This too shall pass.

Hmmmm, when did he "carve through" 24 competitors to win a GP?

How do you win a 3rd of a GP?

Mercedes didn't show up for the FIA Awards pre-ceremony today in Paris and there's rumours flying that they won't appear at the prize giving tomorrow night to pick up the constructors trophy. Seems very petty if they don't.
