    9: Well..
but like.. fells like there's nothing to stop Dodge now..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,501 ✭✭✭✭Slydice

Finished! Overall it was grand. Felt like a not-as-great but alright cross between the styles of Umbrella Academy and Harry Potter. Not needing an 18s/R rating but I'd say it has enough dark in it to keep to a 12A / PG-13. Bonus points for the
    Alcoholic redemption story arc
which they didn't need to do but was sound to include.

    10: Well...
WELL... WELLL FINE! FINE! That's JUST FINE!
Right.. yeah .. no .. fine..

    So I
didn't see it coming. I knew something was coming but I didn't think it would be him and I didn't think it would be her. It's better than the worst case of Bode + Rufus being alone with no keys Versus a horde of the I guess. Although I'd kind of been preparing for something like that and it didn't seem too bad.. on the assumption Bode and Rufus could've won the day all by themselves in season 2.

Episode 6 on this and enjoying the mystery, even if its key (hoho) question marks are dragged out just a tinnnny bit too much. Not sure 10 episodes was the right length, given 8 seems to be the magic number for these cinematically inflected series. Kinsey has become kinda insufferable though, her fearless persona pretty obnoxious -, even if that's kinda the point.

I like how the wife has her own agency, and orbits the kids' own plot, albeit without the magical impetus. It's a good way to keep the cast involved without feeling too contrived; both pursuing their own mysteries, that presumably will dovetail by the end.

Enjoyed this but the ending / setup for season 2 was ridiculously telegraphed.

    Is it worth getting into?

It won't change your world, but it's a solid supernatural mystery drama with a likeable cast. Despite the leads being kids, its way darker in tone than the cast suggests (like, no way suitable for child viewers). Only 10 episodes too, and clips along at a decent pace. Solid B grade show.

Finally started this so 1 episode watched so far. Have read the comics but long enough ago that I remember some but not all of it. Enjoyed the first episode.
One thing though is if I was Kinsey, I would be wary of the ice cream guy. First he looks everywhere for her at lunch and then somehow has her number to give her the location of the thing later

True, sounds like the start of an inevitably rocky (road) relationship.. :pac:

Excellent news It took the guts of a decade and 3/4 networks trying to get it to screen so good to see it will get a decent run now.

Back to back I wonder, just in case of more lockdowns? A young enough cast after all so might make sense to get as much filmed as possible. Glad to hear it though. Was a very enjoyable, surprisingly dark show

Surprisingly dark? Have you read the comic it's based on though? The show went for a much lighter tone throughout and I felt neutered a lot of what made the comic so powerful and unsettling.

Never read the comics and didn't know much of the original material. But yeah, I'd call any show that casually killed a kid by shoving him Infront of a train "dark" :D Still an air of light adventure, but not without a sense of danger either

I'm halfway through the series and I'm enjoying it. I haven't read the comics but I have read a couple of Joe's books and they creeped the bejaysus out of me (Heart Shaped Box, anyone?) so I was expecting this to be a bit scary but thank fook it isn't. Glad there's another couple of seasons in the works. It's an intriguing story

    Ha! Touché.
I kind of envy anyone who can go into the show clean with no expectations, enjoying the show on its own merit, but for me it was a constant comparison to the comic unfortunately.
It's honestly one of my favourite comics (if not all-time favourite). Once the show has ended, I'd strongly recommend those who enjoyed the show to pick up the comic, even those who aren't usually fans of the medium.

    Just finished this and whilst I enjoyed it overall some of the decisions made by characters just really annoyed me;
like Ellie taking the key to the crown with her when she went to get the crown and why Bodie never once went back to Chamberlain to ask what the hell was going on
I feel like there's a lot of mythos that we're not getting which I hope is explored in future seasons, I've not read the comics so I don't know how loyal an adaptation it is, not very loyal tonally by the looks of some posts above but I feel like the show is making these choices to develop them later when it just seems unnatural for the characters. As I said I enjoyed it overall though.

A show I had completely forgotten about; so much of that going on with the Year That Wasn't. This rode the line well with its tone and frights, I look forward to more.

Full story trailer has dropped; shows a bit more of what's in store for Season 2 ...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,501 ✭✭✭✭Slydice

I think this trailer has me feeling a bit not sure about the show.. much like the season 1 trailer did..

but then Season 1 was decent.. so I'll give it a go 🙂

I really enjoyed season 1 but its been so long I'll have to really pay attention to the S.1 recap when it comes out.

Looking forward to this season .

Man I wish I watched that recap cos on finishing the first episode of season 2, quickly realised I had little clue what was going on.

I just 'discovered' this on Friday and have gone through series 1 over the last few days. Very enjoyable so far although the reactions of the characters are odd sometimes.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,501 ✭✭✭✭Slydice

+1 on the recap. I realised I needed it just after the opening scene.

2.1: Picking up mostly from where they left off I think.. after a few months maybe

The new keymaking was flagged in the trailer.

The 18 yr age limit felt new but also a bit of a reminder of Narnia.. heh 🙂

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,501 ✭✭✭✭Slydice

    2.2: I don't remember the story around

the kid/animal that dodge has in the cage or much about Erin except that she was like how she was in the hospital during Season one

    Kinda cool

that she's awake now.. gonna learn a bit more about the keys, maybe all the adults will be able to remember.

Maybe Duncan (the Uncle/Brother) will remember stuff.

    Wonder what

Dodge is planning to make with the key.. I mean like.. she already made a turn-people-to-gloop key by accident. Maybe something to do with Power or something to escape something they haven't shown in the series yet.

I think to the first bit...

The creature in the cage was a manifestation of fear that Kinsey had during (I think) her trips using the Head Key, but it escaped into the real world.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Home & Garden Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 22,407 CMod ✭✭✭✭Pawwed Rig

    That's it pb.

If you recall Kinsey pulled her fear out of her head and buried it but dug it up to attack Dodge. It subsequently ran off into the woods and Kinsey thought no more about it.

I am finding that alot of the decision making is a bit odd and the storylines are not standing up to too much scrutiny. Still enjoying it though

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,501 ✭✭✭✭Slydice

2.3: Oh! That was cool! I need to know what happens next!

Also .. separately.. Bode being all like.. "It wasn't me" .. when .. really though.. it was 😁

Ah cool! Now I remember! I remember thinking it might be a big deal at the time.

ahhh yes.. there's me thinking something might come of it:

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,501 ✭✭✭✭Slydice

    2.3: Starting to feel like

in the bigger story.. maybe they won't figure out how to keep the memory of magic or find the memory key

Bode gonna be holding up the fort for a bit

    Felt good to see

Kinsey take back her fear.. from what I remember the actress Emilia Jones did a decent enough job with the transition in season one.

The rat head was a bit small in hindsight wasn't it?

    Compared to the spider

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,501 ✭✭✭✭Slydice

    2.5: Well..

That's all coming together now. They've got Duncan back his memories, they know Dodge is in Gabe, Bode will know it was Rufus's Mom.

So maybe a big fight out with Dodge now? Or maybe dodge gets taken out and Eden takes over.. i dunno

Nuts! I miss-numbered that one. Was for 2.4

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 36,711 CMod ✭✭✭✭pixelburp

Episode 3 and this may sound weird but the most unrealistic and unbelievable element in this show is that a bunch of Generation Z kids would have a manic love for old 70s horror. Or would know who Tom Savini is to name their group 😆 they'd be James Wan fanboys or somesuch.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,501 ✭✭✭✭Slydice

I.. I just assumed kids these days were into some wierd old cultural stuff 😁

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,283 ✭✭✭✭CastorTroy

When Bode was watching Dark Crystal on his tablet I was thinking he was going to be in for a surprise when he saw what other Netflix originals were available.

As for the interest in old horror films, sure I wasn't alive at the time of a load of the hammer horror films but I'm familiar with them. But I guess I first watched them back when there were only 6 channels and had to watch whatever was on, so not really much choice. 🤔

That was a weird bit of cross promotion, especially for a show that never got renewed and ended on a cliffhanger. That Dark Crystal show was fantastic and that little clip gave me a sad we'll never get more.

Ah the horror stuff just rings a little weird that a whole group of Gen Zs would be that stoked into old horror movies to am obsessive degree. I mean, they have taste and modern mainstream horror is kinda shít - but that's beside the point 😆

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,501 ✭✭✭✭Slydice

    2.6: I really thought..

there was gonna be a fight at the start of that episode .. like a surprise fight.. but now it's gonna be a planned fight next episode.

That sucked so bad for Erin. A "let's split up moment" without saying it.

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,793 ✭✭✭FunLover18

    Just finished season 2.

Definitely a step down from season 1 I really like the concept but the writing is poor, characters make poor decisions so that the plot can go in a certain way or not being suspicious of behavior for reasons, like Bode never mentioned to Kinsey that Gabe came over to use the ghost key, that never came up over dinner? I got really frustrated by the way people just casually left keys lying around and so many times people would use the head key while leaving the door to their room wide open. I enjoy the concept but some of the writing is really clunky at times. Some interesting things lined up for season 3 though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,501 ✭✭✭✭Slydice

    2.7: Uh oh!

It's like.. a demon making key I think. So.. maybe an upcoming army of demons.

Duncan saying goodbye to Erin felt deeper than the losing Erin scene. Felt like they'd given enough time to invest in Duncans story for it but not enough for Erins story.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 36,711 CMod ✭✭✭✭pixelburp

On episode 7 myself and in my increasingly large book of clichés or tropes that should probably die?

When characters confidently announce (usually to stirring music) "it ends [today|tonight]". There are 3 more episodes after this folks; it clearly doesn't. 😂

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,501 ✭✭✭✭Slydice

    2.8: Alright, alright, that's

the origin story of the keys and keymaking then.

lining up now for a .. I'm guessing.. confrontation with Gabe episode and then a battle, save the day/cliffhanger and wrap up finale.

So I got it in my head to go back and watch the trailer for the cancelled version that starred Sarah Bolger and Miranda Otto

And while I was looking I stumbled on this

Full pilot. Haven't watched it yet myself and only 360p but thought some here may be interested.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 36,711 CMod ✭✭✭✭pixelburp

Good find. I hadn't known there was a cancelled pilot out there. Weird seeing familiar beats and moments with a different cast. It's all a bit flatter than the netflix show, maybe that's just me. Has that distinct "network television" vibe about it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,501 ✭✭✭✭Slydice

    2.9: Oh 😲

Jackies gone?!!? 😲 Didn't even ping on my radar as a possibility!

    And! Rufus's mother is back!

Earlier I thought the performance of the mother, Nina Locke (Darby Stanchfield), turned up to an 11 for the trauma of all the events happening around her. The performance level was like a sea change.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,501 ✭✭✭✭Slydice

annnnd finished season 2.. Overall, it was alright. Dragged down a bit by a noticeable dip in quality in the middle of the season I think.. highlighted by a return to form in the last two episodes.

At the end I was picking up some vibes of

Narnia with the passing of the magic from one generation to the next

    2.10: I think the

battle and the wings and how it all went down at the house was done well but also like

Rusfus's mother coming back and the writers remembering Lucas (cos I forgot!)

Then Bode and the mother looking through the memories!

Then Eden! 😲This soldier dude looks like he could be a pretty mean baddie next season. I assume it might end up a bit of him vs (his decendent?) Mr. Bennett, the new teacher from the school.

Future: Well.. it's setup for a season 3 and looks like it could be good. Given this seasons dip, I'd be hoping they release it during a lull so it doesn't get distracted from too much.
