Car with some body modifications and insurance.

The majority of car insurance companies will consider anything not on the car from the manufacturer or factory as a modification. Replacing parts such as brakes, oil, etc. are not included (in my opinion only so check before takig that as Gospel) as these would be "perishable" in that they require constant changing over the life of the car, however features that the car did not come from the factory with would be classed as a modification.

So in your case, of the three items listed, I'd say the exhaust is a modification, the bodykit is not, and the spoiler I'm not sure off as I don't know if it comes with that or not.

There is also the issue of second hand cars. Any modifications made to it by the previous onwer must be declared by you. This is not to be a "goodie-two shoes" (anyone still use that phrase?) but if anything happens you your insurance provider will scour your policy and if there is an aftermarket stereo in the car you didn't declare they will use it as an excuse to invalidate the policy.

Some issues to look out for are:

• New exhaust system
• Aftermarket wheel size
• Tuning/reprogramming engine
• New sound system
• Altering the fuel system
• Altering the suspension of the car
• Tinted windows (not factory ones)
• Modifying the bodywork
• Altering the chassis

Different alterations will affect your policy. Cosmetic stuff may not affect the policy too much if at all, while a sound system costing thousands would. The biggest factor would be engine or chassis/body work. Anything that changes these items will almost certainly impact your insurance cost.

It all coms down to cost. If you're in an accident what are the insurance companies looking at in terms of cost to repair or replace. Its why there are specialised modificed car insurance companies.
