Squid Game's "botched" subtitles have changed the show's meaning for English-speaking viewers, some Korean-speaking fans say.

I've watched The Chestnut Man as well and would highly recommend it especially if you're a fan of scandi noir.

Probably a similar vibe to The Bridge, and while the lead actors may not be as charismatic, the plot is probably better and it's well paced.

I expect there will be a second series ... though not sure how they'll handle the title as it's so specific to this series.

Really liked The Chestnut Man too. Very well done.

OMG would absolutely never have chosen to watch Squid Games but decided to watch an episode to see what the hype was about. Just finished episode 2. Love it and hate it at the same time and think things are only about to hot up.

    A 👍👍👍 for Chestnut Man.

I finished S3 of Sex Education tonight and I have to say it didn't quite reach the levels of S1/2 for me. Some of it was still great, mainly the first half of the season, but there were some parts in the second half that I found myself zoning out for. It felt a little bit less subtle in it's writing too, some very big "THIS IS A MESSAGE" scenes at times. I'll still watch S4, but I won't be as excited about it as I was the previous ones.

Dave Chappelle: The Closer - As he closes out his slate of comedy specials, Dave takes the stage to try and set the record straight -- and get a few things off his chest.

Escape The Undertaker - Can The New Day survive the surprises at The Undertaker's spooky mansion? It's up to you to decide their fate in this interactive WWE-themed special.

Adult Material Season 1 - A veteran British porn star must navigate the changing industry and questions around abuse of power while parenting her three children.

Bad Hair - At a TV network in 1989, an aspiring VJ is pressured into getting a weave. Her new hair could help her get ahead - if it didn't have a mind of its own

Adult Material is excellent imo, it was kind of poorly marketed by channel 4. Hayley Squires is sensational.

Also finished this last night, Funnily enough, i enjoyed it much more than Season 2 as I felt it wasnt nearly as preachy / obvious in its effort to cover every type of sexuality going between the main cast.

Indeed, The final episode almost felt like a conclusion of sorts in a lot of ways (despite the obvious cliffhangers), and I'd be happy enough if they left it there and didn't make a 4th season.

I dunno, I just think with the complete absence of the sex clinic that a lot of the issues they discussed just didn't feel as natural in how they were dealt with. I think there's a few too many characters too, meaning some of the arcs don't get as much time and attention as the others. Ruby and her friends just disappeared at the half way point, for example.

I'm guessing there'll be several characters less next season, just given how S3 ended. So maybe they'll tighten things up a bit in that respect. I didn't hate S3 or anything, and the things they do well are still great. I just think this is definitely a show with a short lifespan and S3 was showing that at times.

I read the book a couple of months ago and had no clue a series had been made. This is great news as the book is incredibly dark with a great plot.

I'm intrigued now to see how the series ends, and if it has the book ending or if it's left open ended to continue into a second season. I really hope not because I'm going to binge over the next couple of days!

The S.M.B. of ~20 years ago would be knee deep in ultraviolent South Korean dystopian dramas, gritty slow burn murder mysteries and meditations on grief and faith within a horror series but alas my tastes have dramatically changed over the years.

Right now I'm half way through Maid where the stakes are at times no higher than a young woman trying to juggle the world of working , daycare and a feverish child. It's very good.

While the likes of Squid Game, The Chestnut Man and Midnight Mass may not be my cup of tea I do have to acknowledge that Netflix seem to be really nailing their "Originals" right now.

Their original movies continue to be mostly pants though.

  • Registered Users Posts: 340 ✭✭john9876

You'll be pleased to hear that it does have a definitive conclusion.

I didn't realize that it was based on a book.

I suspect that the suggested romance between the lead detectives will form the backdrop for another series.

Pressed ‘Play Something’ by mistake and Maid came on. It’s a Warner Bros/Netflix series about a newly single mom who has to clean to earn enough to keep in touch with her daughter.

5 episodes in, it’s compelling viewing.

It's excellent. Didn't realise until I'd finished that Alex and Paula are mother and daughter in real life!

Probably discussed already but just finished episode 5 of midnight mass and thoroughly enjoying it.

Slow moving and not particularly scary so may not be to everyone's taste but I think it is great.

Looking forward to the last 2 episodes plan to watch as a finale double bill

Squid Game has dubbing which imo, is very distracting. Native tongue with subtitles might be a better starting point.

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,397 ✭✭✭RocketRaccoon

I have to agree with this. I watched the first 2 episodes with the dubbing on and it wasn't great, all the voices just seemed really poorly done, I commented to my wife that it was like an OTT Pokemon episode. It was very distracting and took you out of the story somewhat.

We turned on the original sound with subtitles for the rest and it was much better.

Into The Night. European thriller, mixed English and other languages (subs).

Just finished season 2. Bonkers plot where sunlight is a killer. Solution - watch to find out. It's a hoot full of thrills and spills and great characters.
