w0w!!! pity that one of these has to lose, they've both had an amazing tournament!

I am a bit nervous about Djokovic Zverev ... think Zverev can beat Djoker, he is looking good ..

They should just get rid of seedings on the WTA and have a random draw as they are obviously meaningless

Djokovic could make millions more holding tennis mental fortitude clinics for the likes of Sabalenka, Sakkari etc

Pretty great timing for the WTA for two potential stars to emerge just as Naomi Osaka is starting to look like a busted flush, both appear very comfortable with the media too.

Bit irritated that in the week Djokovic potentially cements himself as the greatest player of all time, breaking the astonishing 20-20-20 share of grand slams between this generation's greats, achieving the calendar slam in the process, the sports pages are preoccupied with a women's final between two unseeded teenagers, which shows only the weakness of women's tennis.

I'm the opposite. Like Hector, I'm a little apprehensive and I'll be happy to savour it if and after it happens.

Usually players in Djokovic's position would appreciate the distraction of Raducanu and Fernandez, but I don't think it matters a jot to Djokovic.

Not sure if the distraction is of any benefit to Zverev; from his interiviews I think his Olympics run has been more motivating for him than anything else.

Don't think that the WTA side will have any effect on Djokovic and Zverev.

Djokovic deserves to do the Calendar Slam imo but I think that that his chances are only about 50:50

Somebody like Zverev is a tougher proposition than last year and Medved (likely finalist but chance of it being FAA as he looks good also) is in flying form also.

For anyone who actually knows the history of the Australian Open you could say that the male Calendar Slam in the true sense has never really been done.

This is because until the late 1980's a lot of the top male players didn't bother go to to Australia for the Australian Open.

It was held in December, until the early 1980's it was actually on over Christmas. e.g. the men's 1981 Australian Open was 24 December 1981 through 3 January 1982

So a lot of the top players simply didn't go because they wanted to spend Christmas elsewhere

Secondly until the late 1980's the prize money was lower than the other slams.

Another reason which meant that the top players didn't bother going to Australia.

Look at the 1981 Seeds and Final Eight of the US Open versus the Australian Open

Borg, Connors, McEnroe, Lendl, Gerulaitis etc didn't go to the Australian Open at all that year.

Incredible stuff from Emma, she wins with pretty much ease , while Fernandez fights for everything she gets, will be some final.

AO aside, I think Nadal is the only Open Era player apart from Laver to win French, Wimbledon and US in the same year?

    Yes

Three or more in a year

    Novak Djokovic 2015, 2011, 2020

    Roger Federer 2007, 2006, 2004

    Rafael Nadal 2010

    Mats Wilander 1988 (AO,FO,UO)

Jimmy Connors - 1974 (and he was banned from the French Open - probably would have done it as that was his peak year) 20-0 record at the slams that year

It's very difficult to compare eras properly, especially with advances with technology, fitness and diet. Another reason players didn't go to Australia was the travel involved, much easier to travel to Australia or any part of the world in the modern era, (until the recent Covid pandemic of course), than it was back in the 70's & 80's, even into the early nineties. It's really only since they changed from grass to Harcourt plus venue change, that the top players started going consistently to AO, of course this coincided with travel improvements too. The USO also had a few surface changes in the 70's from grass to clay then onto hard, so even the slams themselves weren't consistent. The surfaces on all 4 slams were significantly different too up until the early noughties, so often players skipped their weakest surface or specialised in one surface. Agrassi achieving the career slam at FO (1999 I think)was considered an amazing achievement at the time due to the surface differences, a calendar slam wasn't even considered possible at the time.

There has since been a homogenization of the AO, USO and even Wimbledon surfaces over last 20 years; AO became more similar to USO after AO changed surface type in the late noughties, Wimbledon plays more like a hard court now than ever before. Only the FO is now significantly different in how it plays to the others. Players also didn't really seem as interested in the slam race until recently, look at players who are considered all time greats only on 7, 8 or 9 slams.

The slam race is really only a recent phenomenon, Sampras was the first I remember people mentioning the slam record, then Federer came along and surpassed Sampras on 14. No one could have thought we'd have 3 players on 20 with Djokovic almost definitely going to win a few more.

The biggest stumbling block to the calendar grand slam in the last 15 years or so has been Nadal at the FO. Think he stopped both Federer and Djokovic twice (4 times) from doing it. It's probably not that surprising that when Djokovic got over Nadal this year at the FO, everyone immediately felt Djokovic could do the calendar slam. Winning the FO will continue to be the most difficult hurdle to a calendar slam as the surface is completely different to the rest, that hurdle is now slightly lower as Nadal's dominance on clay begins to wind down.

The slam race is not directly connected to the calendar slam. They are very much two separate things.

The calendar slam is not about longevity where the slam race is to an extent. It's about doing it in one year (of course).

It goes without saying that Nadal at the French Open being the block for Federer and Djokovic

Not many people remember of course that Nadal retired in the AO in 2010 with a knee injury in the 1/4 final against Murray

He was the defending champion that year in Australia having won in 2009 and went on to win the next 3 slams of 2010

Regardless I think that Djokovic will fight tooth and nail to try to get this as it will set him apart.

It hasn't been done in men's tennis since 1969 and so for Djokovic to do it will set him apart and that's huge for him

It's also why so many are against him on it!

(points about AO above are certainly valid for up to '85 or so as a slam should be contested by the top players - Re travel the 747 has been flying since 1970 so travel times have not been reduced in open era much. Maybe there are more flights but even one flight a day with connections was enough.)

The surfaces have not changed all that much since Federer started winning in 2003. Wimbledon despite what people think has not changed since 2001 with full effect of the grass change coming in in 2002 as this 2019 article explains. So by the time Federer won in 2003 the change had already been there. The old grass mixture used to wear out too much. It did get slower but that was 20 years ago now.

There is, of course, a widely held perception that Wimbledon has been constantly slowing down the courts over the years, but that’s not true. The one change that did happen was in 2001; there is no evidence whatsoever to suggest there has been any modification since then.

US Open had decoturf from 1979 to 2020. It's a bit faster since the 2020 change.

The Australian open had to change from rebound ace in 2008 because rebound ace it was a inconsistent in pace and bounce from one year to the next as a surface and caused players injury. Rebound ace was a bit faster than plexicushion but there is not as much in it as people think.

The whole surfaces argument does not hold as much water as they have largely been the same in the last 20 years.

Watched the two semi's back today, didn't actually know both results until about 6pm. Managed to avoid the first semi but unfortunately had the second one spoiled for me.

Wow! Dream final indeed. That final service game from Sabalenka was just 🤐 Absolutely thrilled for Leylah though, just look at the players she's beaten to make the final!

Happy for Emma too, getting to a grand slam final on her second appearance in a main draw is a surreal stat. Also incredible when you consider how her Wimbledon ended. You could possibly have foreseen a grand slam final in her future, but at the very next slam?

I think I'll be rooting for Fernandez on Saturday, better game to watch and has taken out some incredible opponents to get there. It'd be something of a letdown for her to take out Osaka, Kerber, Svitolina and Sabalenka only to then lose to Raducanu, but I guess that's tennis. I obviously wouldn't begrudge Raducanu winning though. Hope it's a good match above all else!

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,810 ✭✭✭Girly Gal

It's certainly a final to look forward to, wouldn't begrudge either the win (neither might ever get the chance again given how unpredictable the women's game is), both have been a breath of fresh air, hopefully both give a good account of themselves and it'll be a great final. Would like to see Raducanu win to complete the fairytale.

It's unusual that the women's side overshadows the men's especially when you consider what Djokovic is trying to do and also an outside chance of a new winner too.

Hi.. does anyone know where i could watch this final please?

    Thanks

  • Registered Users Posts: 39,437 ✭✭✭✭Itssoeasy

Which final ? In the uk and Ireland it’s on Amazon prime video. I know the bbc used to show matches if there was a British involvement(I know for certain they showed a french open match a few years ago) but I don’t know if that happens anymore.

Assuming you mean the women's final, it's being streamed on Amazon prime tomorrow from 9pm our time. If you don't have Prime you can subscribe to their free trial and unsubscribe before being charged a single cent.

I have seen some (probably untrue) rumours that Prime may actually be streaming the final for free tomorrow night. In the event that's true I'll post it on the thread here and let you know 🙂

    Medved rolls past FAA.

    FAA couldn't convert into sets.

    Main event on now.

Zverev will be more economical with his energy (both mental and physical) compared to Berrettini.

    Bigger threat to Djokovic.

If Zverev's serve is solid it's tough for Djokovic.

Zverev breaks even though Djokovic was serving well enough.

if Zverev keeps going well on his serve quality then Djokoivc could be out.

    Djokovic frames it.

    Set down.

    Djokovic struggling to hold serve.

Djokovic very appreciative of Zverev's drop off in the second set there to let him in.

Djokovic still not convincing on his own serve.

This match is far from over.

The match turned on that horror miss by Zverev serving at 6-4 0-1 30-30, followed by a double fault to cough up the break. Then he got broken again at 2-5, meaning he serves second in the third set.

Djokovic creating problems for himself really with sloppy backhands and bad shot selection

Some good serving and a skiddy line-ball bail him out

    Living on the edge though

Going to the net working for him according to the commentators but some of those times Zverev didn't even force him to play a shot

    Correct strategy from Novak there

    Make Zverev take the risk

    And pays off

Although on the last point Djokovic forced the point to create the winning opportunity

Strike and the set is gone to Djokovic

Some air needed for both parties after that game

That set could easily have had a break against Djokovic but he held on and hit at the right time

Djokovic gone to 1/7 on betting

    Zverev 4/1

    Good response from Zverev

Djokovic not convincing on serve at all

a bit ominous for Djokovic now

He looks a little short of zip

    Zverev is serving very well

    Too good from ND

    Craftsman

Can he hold out tho - a long way to go

Djokovic has not been comfortable on serve really

    Make them hit the shot

Cometh the hour, cometh the man

    Championship tennis

    He's going to the final

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,069 ✭✭✭Augme

Zverev should be kicking himself over that final set. A shambles.

Fair play Novak. Just knows when to step it up though. Should be an excellent final as well. Can't see Novak having it as easy as he did in Aus.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,810 ✭✭✭Girly Gal

Well done Djokovic, match went along expected lines, Djokovic eventually pulling through. Good to see Zverev put in a good account of himself, bodes well for him going forward, that he might actually be ready to win a slam himself, still a bit to do as there is a big difference between getting close and actually getting over the line, the next step for him is the hardest part of the game, this is the part Djokovic has perfected, regardless of the situation he always seems to be able to find a way to pull through. His record in 5 set deciders is remarkable, once it goes to a fifth, he's pretty much unbeatable.

Medvedev needs to be at his best tomorrow, take every opportunity he gets and hold it together at the crucial big points, that still might not be good enough, as we know Djokovic will show up ready to take any sniff of an opportunity. Let's hope for a great match and performance from both players.

Medvedev has no excuses, playing well, a favourable draw, easier semi final, so should be fresher for the final, but, Djokovic is the ultimate challenge and think Medvedev will ultimately come up short.

Djokovic has too much on the line for him to let it slip now; the calendar slam ( unlikely to get the chance again) and getting to 21( definitely get that chance again and go beyond) all on the one night.

Good news @listrybabe and anyone who doesn't have Prime! Channel 4 are broadcasting the Raducanu match live! Coverage starts from 8pm tonight.

Pretty mad really, I wonder how they got the rights ahead of BBC or ITV. Never once recall Channel 4 previously showing a tennis match. Might actually watch it there instead of prime, live TV always trumps streaming 👀
