Watched The Firm (1993, Tom Cruise) over the weekend. It clocks in at 2.5 hours, which is about 3/4 of an hour too long. It's very 1990s and has a strong plot which I couldn't guess how it would end.

Beckett is like a love letter to the thrillers of the 1970s. It has the same feel as them throughout with the cinematography used. I enjoyed it even if some of it was just a bit too contrived. Beckett's run near the end did look like when I'm running to the toilet and I'm trying to avoid soiling my pants.

Was just going to say much the same thing, serious 1970s vibe off it. The trailer made it look like like more of an action film than it is. Nice to see a hero barely able to stand up after getting the crap beat out of them over the course of the film, not something you see much in thrillers/action films these days anymore 😂 Really enjoyed it.

Watched The Equaliser after and it was ok but about 45 minutes too long.

Had seen the trailer and it looked interesting - if a little tinged with that "Foreign places are scary" aesthetic often seen in American thrillers. The name is deeply underwhelming though; "Beckett". 😁

Yeah there is a bit of that vibe about it alright, plus picking Greece as the setting was a bit odd...would have worked better if it was somewhere a bit more...eh....soviet I think.

Beckett is a dire, dire film. I'm not usually critical but with so many movies out there, I am disgusted that I wasted 2 hours of my life on that. I cannot see anything going for it. I was looking forward to a bit of a simple evening action film. But, God it was so fake. Is that Denzels son. Denzel needs to have a serious word. Talk about overacting. He was diabolical. I hadn't realised it was him in Tenet either. Was slightly better.

Some of the things that happened in the film was just so outrageous, you couldn't take it anyway seriously - jumping from a massive cliff, onto a tree, falls onto a rock ground and then just runs away. And that part where he jumps off the edge of the multistorey car-park. Dear God.

Funny thing is, Washington had the look on him that he was giving it socks, and was playing for a possible oscar nomination. I honestly cannot say anything positive about the movie. Towards the end I didn't know why he was being chased, and I didn't care. Just bring some conclusion to the film

For the first time in a long long time I turned off a movie after half an hour. Shockingly poor movie with bizarre music and an atmosphere that I’ve never experienced in a modern movie. No idea what the hell was supposed to be happening!

Time is contagious, everybody's getting old.

Really enjoyed " cocaine cowboys"....... very well made & edited. It's a great story......some twists & turns along the way.......I just love all the lawyers in it---- these guys look way more dodgy than the 'alledged' drug smugglers.

Few things I've watched over past few weeks.

The Mule: really enjoyed this, a lot of similarities to Gran Torino.

Secret City: Started off strong but faded as it went. Second season not as good as the first either but was still an interesting show.

Lupin: finally got around to this and loved it. Looking forward to the next season

Releasing one season of Lupin in two half was a silly move by Netflix, imo. We watched the first half really quickly, but the second half flew under my radar and I didn't know it was out till you just shared it.

Came here to post about this, thought it was brilliant.

Started it last night after watching an hour of Army of the Dead. Had to turn that one off, and I would generally watch a film to the end once I started.

It was a strange decision all right but I had wondered if it was simply another CoVid enforced one; that shooting or post production was delayed by the pandemic and they just split what they had.

Bizarrely watched this two nights ago. First I posted about it got a lot of stick. But I loved it. As an ex criminal barrister who now specialises (well in something else) was going through play by play of certain shaftings and how they shouldn’t have happened. Actually realised on reading back that I was talking about the Legend of Cocaine Island. I did watch Cocaine Cowboys. Loved the decadence of it. The power boats world championship was the funniest and equally bizarre thing.

Also watched how to fix a drug scandal. Truly jawdropping. Two separate drug laboratory analysts with a Keith Richards level habit who between them tainted over 30000 convictions. Really interesting documentary.

Finally Fear City. This serial documentary chronicling how basically Rudy Giulliani single handledly dismantled the 5 Mafia families using the RICO Act. I didn’t know he had such a fundamental positive change and equally strange to see what he became.

Old School is being added on September 1st. You’re my boy blue!

What I liked about cocaine cowboys was even though they were big time multi- tonne drug smugglers, they seemed like two grand lads.

Half an hour into Sweet Girl and nah. I've only seen Jason Momoa in GoT and on various chat shows. Seems a likeable guy but this is another netflix turkey. When he blasts the baddies with the fire extinguisher I called a halt.

at the start they were definitely nice guys. These jewish Cuban immigrants who blagged their way into becoming what they eventually became. They were just living the rockstar and playboy life and brought all their friends and family with them. I think there was a line in it ‘we didn’t see each other as criminals but normal 20 something high school drop outs’.

they were also very altruistic and charitable and if any of their community wanted something then nothing was too much.

However I think it became clear as time went on, that the goodness slowly diminished. As it always does when people get in the way.

if you liked that I’d recommend operation Odessa. It was on Netflix but not sure now.

Whilst I enjoyed the show it’s hard to see there being much more to show of interest.
